After being inoperative for a year, the HAARP station in Alaska is being permanently shut down and dismantled.

FAIRBANKS -- The U.S. Air Force gave official notice to Congress Wednesday that it intends to dismantle the $300 million High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program in Gakona this summer.

The shutdown of HAARP, a project created by the late Sen. Ted Stevens when he wielded great control over the U.S. defense budget, will start after a final research experiment takes place in mid-June, the Air Force said in a letter to Congress Tuesday.

While the University of Alaska has expressed interest in taking over the research site, which is off the Tok Cutoff, in an area where black spruce was cleared a quarter-century ago for the Air Force Backscatter radar project that was never completed. But the school has not volunteered to pay $5 million a year to run HAARP.

Responding to questions from Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski during a Senate hearing Wednesday, David Walker, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Science, Technology and Engineering, said this is "not an area that we have any need for in the future" and it would not be a good use of Air Force research funds to keep HAARP going. "We're moving on to other ways of managing the ionosphere, which the HAARP was really designed to do," he said. "To inject energy into the ionosphere to be able to actually control it. But that work has been completed."

Comments of that sort have given rise to endless conspiracy theories, portraying HAARP as a super weapon capable of mind control or weather control, with enough juice to trigger hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.

Anyone claiming victory? You know, we were on to them so they had to shut it down.

See, they've injected enough energy into it that they now control it. We're too late!

The "chemtrail" internet hoax adherents and HAARP conspiracists will have a field day with this. There are plenty of scary words in there if you selectively filter out the "false flag" words.

I can see someone like Max Bliss or Dane Wigington interpreting this as "our task of Owning the Weather is now complete well before 2025 and we are moving onto other things and dismantling the Gakona facility to draw the attention of truly "awake" people away from it."

Indeed:

We're moving on to other ways of managing the ionosphere, which the HAARP was really designed to do," he said. "To inject energy into the ionosphere to be able to actually control it. But that work has been completed."

That's perfect fertilizer for fertile imaginations.

What he meant was more along the lines that: they can control a tiny bit of the ionosphere a little bit for a small amount of time.

There's still no downward coupling, so it still has no effect on anything down here. All along the research has been about radio communications.

And of course they can't control it all all now, as they don't have HAARP any more.

They are only closing down HAARP as the super secret underground facility in Narnia has come online. I don't need to prove it, I just know *taps nose and winks*

Of course they don't need HAARP, a mere toy compared to the latest NEXRAD Sequential Heterodyne Internal-gravity-wave Technology and all.

I mean, what more proof do ya need?

I know there were a great deal of CT's concerning the HAARP program, but has anything good come out of this facility or others like it. What has the research yielded? A decision to shut it down seems like it was a waste of money and defense budget appropriations.

One thing is the ELF technology used to allow radio communications with submarines at operating depth. The US is one of two countries that have that capability, so everything about it is pretty carefully protected.

The simple answer is bucketloads of research has been done often by universities, such as Stanford http://vlf.stanford.edu/research/experiments-haarp-ionospheric-heater

Discussions have been going on for sometime to try to get others involved to take over the facility but with no joy.

Why do you suspect no one else wants to take over the facility? Is it purely because of financial reasons? Seems to me if the science was that great it wouldn't be closing at all or the government would offer grants and incentives for a University to take it over. Look at the billions of dollars being spent at the LHC or CERN via schools, gov, and private sector. The 5 million the airforce is asking for annually seems like a drop in the bucket when compared to machines smashing atoms together.

It really isn't correct to ask "Why do you suspect..." on a debunking site. This is not a discussion forum. It is designed to remove bunk. But answer your question, they where done, didn't have funding to keep going and no one else wanted the facility because it wouldn't do what they wanted it to do for the cost.

Most universities don't have machines to smash atoms together, though, most of those are government or military, like CERN. Very few universities have specialized facilities that cost millions to operate, they usually pay for timeshare style access to somebody else's as they need it.

Found this in an Article from "Scientific American", wich was published further on "Nature"

Its bizarre backstory rivals that of a blockbuster Hollywood film. A powerful US senator from Alaska, Republican Ted Stevens, helped win approval for the facility in the early 1990s. But to justify HAARP’s price, the Pentagon had to dream up exotic military applications, sparking conspiracy theories.

In 2008, Stevens was voted out of office barely a week after being convicted of corruption (the conviction was tossed out in 2009 amid allegations of prosecutorial misconduct, and Stevens died in a plane crash the following year). He was replaced by Democrat Mark Begich, whose brother has been an outspoken advocate for the idea that HAARP is a secret military weapons project.

WTF?!

Nick Begich Jr. was involved indirectly by his brother into the whole founding of Haarp?!

Seems to be a self-fulfillig prophecy - or even a self-fulfilling-conspirancy-Theory

AFAIK Nick had no involvement, except for being related. I think it's more like he became interested in the topic in part because of the family connection, and the geographic proximity. I don't think he's even mentioned any real first-hand knowledge.

Can someone please give details behind this comment on Dane Wigington's page...

“Today the HAARP system was turned off, expect eartquakes in the next several days”, stated Serbian professor and scientist Velimir Abramovic during a radio broadcast on May 19th.

Abramovic is like the Serbian equivalent of Nick Begich, or Brooks Agnew. Basically someone really into pseudoscience, Tesla, free energy, etc. That's all.

Thanks Mick. From another thread, I get the impression Begich has an honorary doctorate from some subcontinental school of transcendental woo, or the like, and Agnew's doctorate looks self-awarded at best. Does this "professor" have similarly meaningless credentials, or is he a real professor gone off the rails?

He even has an "Einstein was wrong" paper, which (in the absence of him winning the Nobel prize) is a sure sign of a "crank".

I suspect I'm going to regret asking this, but where's his "logic" that OFF=Earthquakes?

2 things:
1) Defining the possibility of blocking sensitive areas from a direct solar disruption - which had some interesting by-products including strengthening the solar storm.
2) Defining the comparisons between troposcatter technologies and ionospheric communications. Neither require a satellite or relay station for communications.

The simple fact is that computing technology and model simulation have caught up with ionospheric research and data collection.
It's happened. We don't need to "play" there to simulate the physical actuality. Our atmospheric "drone-work" is done.)

I keep seeing where people are claiming that there are now many other 'haarp-like' facilities around the world. True? False?

I thought I heard there were another 29 facilities in the world

The Internet is rife with such reports.

But in any case, "so what"? (Keep in mind that a simple search on Google finds a site scarily titled "HAARP and the Sky Heaters"

Complete rubbish, of course. But, when searching, note the Sites that host these ridiculous threads and claims.

EDIT: For Jason and Night -- HAARP is a study of the extreme upper parts of Earth's atmosphere, specifically the ionosphere.

( Link to factual info about that region: http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/i/ionosphere.htm )

You may wish to note that despite all of the CT claims, the ionosphere simply does not interact nor influence the parts of the atmosphere where we reside (troposphere) nor where we occasionally "visit" in a modern commercial airliner (the tropopause and stratosphere).

All of these sorts of experiments involve ways to use the upper regions of the atmosphere in studying many things, experimentally, and also to learn more about them (absent sending spacecraft up, which is far more expensive).

I don't know if this list is complete, but -
Current HF pump facilities
Content from External Source
May also be worth posting the overview to re-cap.

As this process is the same as for the aurora, the optical emission excited by HF waves have sometimes been referred to as artificial aurora, although sensitive cameras are needed to detect these emissions, which is not the case for the real aurora.
Ionospheric HF pump facilities need to be sufficiently powerful to provide the possibility for plasma turbulence studies, although any radio wave that propagates in the ionosphere affects it by heating the electrons. That radio waves affect the ionosphere was discovered already in the 1930s with the Luxemburg effect. Although the research facilities need to have powerful transmitters, the power flux in the ionosphere for the most powerful facility (HAARP) is below 0.03 W/m2.[2] This gives an energy density in the ionosphere that is less than 1/100 of the thermal energy density of the ionospheric plasma itself.[1] The power flux may also be compared with the solar flux at the earths surface of about 1.5 kW/m2. During aurora generally no ionospheric effects can be observed with the HF pump facilities as the radio wave power is strongly absorbed by the naturally heated ionosphere.
