"Planting the hearty evergreen tree known as pyramidal arborvitae is a low maintenance project for homeowners who wish to create a natural privacy screen, property border or wind block. Pyramidal arborvitae aren't overly fussy about the soil they're growing in, doing equally well in both alkaline and acidic soils, as long as the soil is moist. They do best in growing zones three through eight and favor direct sunlight, though they can still grow quite tall and strong in partial shade." Their hardiness is now in question, even the landscapers can't keep them alive.

Did you notice this in that comment "doing equally well in both alkaline and acidic soils, as long as the soil is moist' MOIST, I don't know about your area, but here in Texas, we are limited on when we can water outside. At times we are limited to once a week. That is not enough to keep soil moist.

Only problkem is, like belfrey said, it doesn't look like that is the culprit here with these pines, and I agree, dying the opposite direction, base outward with the crown the last to go, with the bark beetle the crown is the first to go and works its way down.

Apparently that's the pattern that the DNR has been seeing a lot, but it's not always the case with pine bark beetles. Different species tend to colonize different portions of the tree - for example, the red turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus valens) tends to colonize the base of trees.

That's referring to arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis. Even trees that are generally considered easy to grow can have problems, especially during droughts.

Going back to the alleged link between Aluminum exposure and Alzheimer's disease, I have spotted on PMC/PubMed an interesting recent peer-review paper explaining the history and the science of that:
