Did the U.S. Air Force just take a major step toward verifying that chemtrails are real?

Writing for Natural News on August 27, 2016, Samantha Debbie claimed that the:

U.S. Air Force recently revealed a technologically advanced plan to detonate plasma bombs in Earth’s upper atmosphere using a fleet of tiny satellites to “improve the range of radio communications,” according to the Daily Mail.

A closer look revealed that the program is experimental, involves methods and materials that have nothing to do with CT claims about chemtrails, and will occur at an altitude far above the altitude of normal contrails.

According to the actual Daily Mail story:

The US Air Force has granted contracts to three research teams to develop the technology needed to do this, with hopes that CubeSats could carry massive amounts of ionized gas to the ionosphere to create radio-reflecting plasma.

The ionosphere begins roughly 40 miles above the surface and becomes denser with charged particles at night, allowing signals to travel much farther.

There are a few obvious things that don’t support the CT narrative about chemtrails:

1. The ionosphere is far, far above the altitude of normal contrails.

2. I am not a scientist, but it is pretty obvious that ionized gas is different than the usual elements –aluminum, barium, strontium—claimed to be part of chemtrails.

3. Air Force research has nothing to do with weather modification (again, back to altitude) or solar radiation management. The research addresses communications.

I thought the whole idea behind CubeSats was pretty interesting. It appears to be an improvement on HAARP.

Here is a good article for future reference.

Cubesats themselves are just a small form factor satellite, this is just one of many uses for cubesats.

I don't think "improvement on HAARP" is the right way of putting things, it's a radically different form of operation than HAARP.

But of course it's nothing at all like "Chemtrails", as it's in space. It's also a tiny thing compared to what has gone on in the past. Like in 1962, when they just used an atomic bomb.

Starfish Prime was a high-altitude nuclear test conducted by the United States on July 9, 1962, a joint effort of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Defense Atomic Support Agency. The Defense Atomic Support Agency apparently became the Defense Nuclear Agency in 1971.

A Thor rocket carrying a W49 thermonuclear warhead (manufactured by Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory) and a Mk. 2 reentry vehicle was launched from Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. The explosion took place 250 miles (400 km) above a point 19 miles (31 km) southwest of Johnston Island. It was one of five tests conducted by the USA in outer space as defined by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). It produced a yieldequivalent to 1.4 megatonnes of TNT. It was the largest man-made nuclear explosion in outer space.
...
These man-made radiation belts eventually crippled one-third of all satellites in low Earth orbit. Seven satellites failed over the months following the test, as radiation damaged their solar arrays or electronics, including the first commercial relay communication satellite, Telstar, as well as the United Kingdom's first satellite, Ariel 1.

I don't think CubeSats are going to carry "massive amounts" of anything. The basic form factor is a 10cm cube of useful volume, ie one litre. You can bolt them together to make bigger satellites but the biggest ones launched to date have only consisted of six units.

Starfish Prime reminds me of Operation Plowshare.

My reference to HAARP was prompted by a passage from the New Scientist article in the OP.

It’s not the first time we’ve tried to improve radio communication by tinkering with the ionosphere. HAARP, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program in Alaska, stimulates the ionosphere with radiation from ground-based antennas to produce radio-reflecting plasma.

Even a reference to HAARP probably started the CT community chattering.

But, I'll offer my mea culpa about really understanding all the underlying science.

Having a historian talk about physics is like bringing a butter knife to a (plasma)gun fight.;)

It can become another item in a gish...
...the gov't has done "this", so they must be doing "that".
