Mick suggested on X that the objects were flies. I initially thought they'd be completely out of focus, but I decided to recreate the setup in Blender using all the provided data.
I used an 85mm lens at f/5.6 on a 7008 × 4672 photo. The camera was placed where I believe the shot was taken, and I moved the plane backward until the scale matched.
And guess what? A 1.5 cm fly, 80 meters away, would actually still be in focus - and the right size too!
