Commercial Jet Liners Purportedly Missing from Libyan Airport.

*I figure this should go in General discussion for now as there doesn't seem to be much of a 'conspiracy' or much to debunk yet.*

This story has become all the rage amongst right wing news blogs/websites/etc, and this seems to be the source article.
Missing Libyan Jetliners Raise Fears of Suicide Airliner Attacks on 9/11

Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.

Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.

“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” said one official. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”

Alot of vague references to "Officals", but no names nor anything else verify the veracity of these claims which is pretty typical.

Al Jazeera - Planes Destroyed as Rockets Hit Airport.

According to this article; The government (Libya?) says that 90% of the planes were destroyed by rockets.

Here is the location on Google Maps (link). According to Google Earth; the satellite images were taken on 7/24/2014 which is prior to the current report of 11 missing airliners, but after Al Jazeera's reporting of 90% of planes 'destoyed'. However, 'destroyed' in this context could be a bad translation that was intended to mean "inoperable" as most commercial aircraft probably won't take alot of damage and still fly.

That being said, I would have to wonder how many of those planes would have been able to take off after those attacks. I would also add that if 11 planes had infact disappeared; why aren't these 'officials' providing basic information like the makes, models and registration numbers of the aircraft?

It's all I got right now and I've already been up way too late as usual......

All the countries around there as well as a good chunk of Europe is already on edge because of the violence, they'll all be watching what's going on in that airspace. There's pretty much no way an unidentified plane is going to leave Libyan airspace under the circumstances, even without an airport being seized. So even if they were functional planes, I don't see that there's a lot they can do with them.

Is there any proof that 90% of the planes were destroyed? In the (link) you provided which shows a sat image of the airport, there appears to be 30 or 40 planes. Are the planes that appear to be on "dirt" to the left of the airport considered functional or is that location reserved for salvaged planes?

How does 11 planes disappear? In order for them to have disappeared they would've had to flown them out of the airport prior to the bombing or immediately afterwards. Not too mention they would've had to land them somewhere, and its highly unlikely that sort of thing would go unnoticed.

Well not from what I can see which is why I pointed it out.
But thinking about this more. In order to know something is missing, you would have to know it was there in the first place. There must be some way to figure out which airplanes were at the airport before and after this incident. It's like if a car dealer reported to the police that 11 cars were missing but couldn't provide VINs, makes or models. They'd probably get laughed.

You might not be able to prove that 90% of the aircraft were destroyed or inoperable, but can you prove that 11 went missing in the first place?

If they've actually "disappeared" they also could have been scrapped. Like I said about the airspace being watched and nobody being about to trust an unidentified plane leaving even without this. But an airplane is worth quite a bit for scrap - clean aluminum is scrapper gold.

Is there a way to get this information from our end? I think this is an impossible task because we have no way to verify this type of information, unless the airport had some kind of manifest to show who landed there prior to its closing.

Actualy a neighbor of mine who is a CT mentioned this today to me as he walked down the road.
He says Glenn Beck spread the rumor. (That means I am now spreading it from him too..oh, my! ;)

I told him that there is a limited number of airports the planes could be and likely someone is looking for anything missing.

Oh so this site is really just Right Wing Watch ? Why wouldnt they have airplanes ? It is a airport ? Iv always wondered why dont they just buy a aircraft ? Id consider it more of a possibility than a conspiracy .http://www.smh.com.au/world/libyan-islamists-capture-tripoli-airport-20140825-107yff.html

From the snopes article.

As a thread on the aviation community site airliners.net documents, several of the planes claimed in rumors as "missing" or "stolen" have actually been accounted for, having been either caught outside of Tripoli at the time the airport fell to opposition forces or relocated by their operators (Air Contractors pf Dublin) to an airport in Malta for safekeeping. Some of the other airliners were likely destroyed in the fighting or damaged beyond the possibility of operation.

Apparently a source did detail the registration of at least some of the missing planes. Not sure why that wouldn't have made it to the washington free beacon but I really don't have time to look into this until tomorrow.

Glenn Beck said it appears most of the planes have been accounted for or had been removed prior . So the story was bunk or over exaggerated . Either way its good news :)

Reports this week emerged claiming 11 planes had fallen under control of militant extremists after they attacked the Tripoli airport. Fears of a potential 9/11-style attack are on the rise, but if Libyan Terrorists tried to fly stolen planes to the U.S., this is who would greet them. Since the morning of Sept. 11th, 2001, pilots and maintainers from the 113th Wing at Andrews AFB have stood 24/7 alert to respond to any aerial threat.
