Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Hi all, I'm sure I learned of this place through one of those crazy Reddit threads about UFOs. I got re-interested in that topic right around the time of the NJ drones, where everyone was taking pictures of aircraft at night and thinking they're something bizarre. Prior to that, I had a passing interest in anything related to the Navy videos.

My background: former tailhook naval aviator, now working for DoD as a civilian analyst. My perspective on issues like UAPs come from both sets of professional experience.

Hello everyone from Argentina. I created this account a year ago. I don't participate, but I visit the site offline often, like many other people, it seems.
On September 26, 2011, something crashed in the town of Monte Grande. There was talk that it was NASA's UARS satellite, which was about to re-enter the atmosphere around that time, there was talk of a meteorite, and of course there was talk of a UFO. The government at the time gave the absurd explanation that it was a gas explosion, even though there was no evidence to support this claim. The public accepted this explanation without question and went about their day. If you entertained the satellite hypothesis, you were ridiculed. If you entertained the UFO hypothesis, you were ridiculed. If you entertained the meteorite hypothesis, you were ridiculed. I will never forget that. A forum like Metabunk would have been very helpful that day.

Hello everyone, Travis here. I question a lot and also enjoy Event Reconstruction Analysis. as someone who has spent a fair amount of their career with sensor data analysis, modeling and simulation, event reconstruction. I find this forum very enlightening and insightful. Always happy to learn something new and provide insight.
That's a perfect background analyzing UFO videos!

Does that field include a lot of programming? If so, which language do you use?

Welcome!

Hi everyone: I'm an academic in the humanities and a long-time admirer of thoughtful debunking -- not least because I love teaching the traditions and tropes and political implications of various kinds of "supernatural" storytelling (say, Frankenstein, or the psychological horror of Shirley Jackson) from a literary/historical perspective.

So I suppose I'm squarely in the Houdini camp: admire the human artfulness of "magic" as an honest performance, distrust the charlatans seeking attention through deception and cheap tricks, and still be open to the slim possibility that someday one piece of truly compelling evidence just might arrive.

Among the recent threads, I've really enjoyed and admired the analyses unfolding in both the Malvern Hills thread and the Alan Smith/Clovis Trouille thread. Patient, thoughtful, detailed analysis -- that's what I'm here for!

Hi y'all! I'm software engineer and hardware designer from Canada. As a disclaimer: my world-view is profoundly routed in metaphysical naturalism and Bayesian thinking.
That looks exactly as my resume (but for the Canada part) :) Welcome onboard.

Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit of a fan of all things UFO and Skinwalker Ranch related, but for only pure entertainment. I want to believe, but I'm more and more coming to the conclusion that there is absolutely nothing even remotely tangible out there.
As a hobby astrophotographer, I spend quite a lot of time outside under the clear skies, but I have never seen anything out of the ordinary. The night sky is my happy place.
Only very recently I learned about Mick West, his work and this cool website.

Hello everyone:),

I joined because I am interested in deradicalization, which has similarities to helping people navigate out of rabbit holes and conspiracy theories. I have been enjoying Mic West videos on Youtube where he debunks claims that a video must be an alien related UFO. It seems that a lot of the videos don't have enough data to conclude what type of unidentified object is in the video, or in some cases, even whether or not the video is a light anomaly or a solid object. I find it strange that so many people are convinced that alien life exists, and that their crafts are around, when there is no clear evidence of the claim.

Hi Everyone,
I struggled to find how to post!
I hope this is correct and people can see it.

I have joined this site because I have a close family member who has gone deep deep 'down the rabbit hole'.
So I am hoping to gain an understanding of how this has happened to him and if there is any way back.
I highly doubt it. He is into every conspiracy going and strongly believes everything he preaches.
I'm hoping to find a way to help him, although that might prove difficult as he has blocked me on everything.
Regards,
Steve

Welcome, Steve. You might not be able to help him, but perhaps we can help you by providing answers to give him whenever he becomes receptive to them. Good luck!

Welcome! I have wonderful memories of the Christchurch area, and down the road a bit in Ashburton!

I assume you are referring to Central Bank Digital Currency.

Hello y'all

Where to start? I read a lot and when I work, I also listen to audiobooks. So last week, I started listening to Annie Jacobsen's Phenomena, as I liked her book on Nuclear War and was curious if she'd be critical of the CIA's foray into ESP. This week, a third of the way into Phenomena, I got a little irritated by how she seemed to dismiss how SRI got debunked by Randi and his Project Alpha team. Despite planning on finishing the abook and hoping she'll be more critical further into it, my curiosity got the better of me and I looked up critical reviews of her book. This led me here, although the link had more to do with SRI, Stargate and nothing to do with Jacobsen and her book.

I wish I've known about this forum way earlier.

I'm French-Canadian, so English being my second language, my writing might suffer at times. I like reading science-fiction, dystopias and murder mysteries, but mostly, I spend most of my reading time on academic books and science lit on any discipline related to behavioral biology. So, neurobio, ethology, psychology, evolutionary bio and molecular bio, mostly. I am thoroughly fascinated by animal (and human) behavior. Frans De Waal is my favorite scientist. RIP Frans. I'm also a big fan of Randi's (may he also RIP) post-magician work, so this place is a god send. Oh and I'm agnostic on every mystery, but atheist when it comes to organized religions. Good to be doubtful, but also equally good to keep an open mind.

Hey all, I'm a programmer and a student looking to learn more about the process of debunking. I have a passion for data science and am curious about the tools used to track flight paths, satellites and other things in the sky. I have a certain clip I cannot wrap my head around that I would love some assistance in debunking or researching. Outside of that I'm from California and have a passion for explaining the unexplained, music and MMA.

This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once that post, and a few posts in another sub-forum, have been approved.

A few words on who you are and how you ended up here would be appreciated. Or just say hi!

Hello Everyone, I'm interested in finding out which reports are true and which are not true. There is a plethora of information on this Metabunk site to help me achieve just that.

Don't forget, there is a wide grey area between true and not true. Some are "true" in that people are honestly reporting what they saw, but their interpretations are often wildly off the mark. There is a lot of puzzle-solving that goes on here!

Welcome - Post your clip in the Skydentify forum with as much detail as possible (particularly date time & location) and we'll gladly take a look:

Hi!

I'm a dad in my forties and I've been fascinated with the "UFO" topic for many years. I'm definitely in the "I want to believe" camp re: "aliens visiting Earth" (let's be real, how cool would that be?) but I don't think it's happening.

Anyway, I am tired of getting kicked and muted from the Reddit UFOs discord and decided to register here for some sane discussion after reading the Yemen Orb thread yesterday. Randomly: I used to be a regular in a phpBB forum for skeptics/debaters ~20+ years ago and honestly miss the format. Discord is annoying.

Hi everyone!
I am a medical scientist in the United States. I am a lover of truth and rationality.
I ended up here because of the Pentagon UFO videos analysis.
I have great admiration for the work this community does. It is unsurpassed in the public sphere, as far as I know. And I think it is safe to claim humanity is dealing with a bunk pandemic that is very harmful. What you do is extremely helpful and important. THANKS!

Update: apparently I've been banned from the Reddit.com/r/UFOs Discord. Shame.

For signing up here? That's weird cause I am a member there and I think other people here are.

Edit: Oh I am not a member on discord, I read that as reddit for some reason. Still weird to ban for joining here.

I was not banned because I joined this forum. Some of the moderators in that Discord just don't like it when people disagree with them. Oh well.

Hi everyone! I already knew metabunk, and had been visiting from time to time. Now, I was interested in a report coming from the chilean patagonia, and tried to find something here about it, but I couldn't. So I registered and I'll post the link to the matter bellow, and if you guys already have a thread, I would like to know.

I'm some kind of an "amateur meteorologist", and have been looking for some real image of a "ball lightning" for some years. So, I thought that this could be a case.

Edit: Just to add some info, here's a link to a GOES-16 image around the moment of the photos, and I see no storms in the area of Punta Arenas.

Hey everybody. Ran across the link on a Youtube channel called Vetted and thought I'd check it out. Looks like a good place to find out the truth. And I really like how far you guys will go to find it, no matter how bad it may hurt lol. Ive always been told to believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see. With the internet you cant even do that. Glad to be here, call me Sniff.

Good evening! Swedish longtime lurker here and I just thought that perhaps it's time to create an account so I might be helpful if needed. Like Mick I started out with videogame development but then moved on to engineering visualization and technical animation. Plenty of experience working with anything 3D and other fun things like laser scanning or computational fluid dynamics.

Welcome!

That sounds suspiciously like math, though. o_O

G'day all. Long time lurker, first time poster from Australia. My interest in 'debunking' started a long time ago with photographic 'evidence' of ghost orbs (ie, near-camera reflection/backscatter), window/internal camera lens reflections, and more recently 'drone blame' (damaged aircraft radomes, airport shutdowns, and now hybrid attacks). I love the logical and rational approach to debunking on this site.

Hello everyone, my name is Jessica. On 1 October 2025 I observed an unusual object in the night sky (Region de O'Higgins, Chile). I watched it for over two hours before recording it, to rule out a plane, satellite, planet, or drone.

In the recording, the object remains visible for several more hours, making sudden directional shifts, exhibiting stable lock-in moments and path instability, plus extreme variations in velocity while hovering along the plane. It also appears to shift altitude relative to visible stars or other fixed background points. Using basic editing, I zoomed in and it appears to spins on its axis as it speeds and changes direction in the sky.

About an hour after I started recording, additional objects appeared. My neighbour saw them too and took some pics and a short video. I have broken my footage into short key clips for easier viewing. I joined Metabunk to share these clips and would greatly appreciate any scientific or technical feedback. I have been reading through the forum and value how carefully discussions are handled here.Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing the video, it sounds interesting.

(My wife's family are Higgenses, so anybody from O'Higgins, I like already!)

Hello. I'm the unpopular opinion person in my family and thought I would find someone to share my curiosity and need for debunking with. I also live in Denmark, always has, and wonder a great deal about what looks like politicians strings to white supremacy or equally extreme groups. I also find trends in how communication shapes our conversations, policy making, wars and everything else, fascinating. And quite frankly infuriating. So when politicians known for lying, manipulating and having authoritarian tendencies makes very specific claims about the drones spotted over airports here in Denmark, I have to wonder what's going on and how to debunk what I can.
