New Ratings System

I've added a new rating system that replaces the "Like" button. There are now a range of options which show up under the post. This allows you to give more nuanced feedback, like if a post is helpful, or if you agree with it, or disagree with it.

As usual, let me know of any problems.

What exactly were you doing when that happened?

You can take a look at Tools -> Server Error Log, maybe there's useful information there. But I guess you know that already.

i think a dislike/disagree button is going to have some negative effects.
I removed the more negative options ("Dumb", "Bad Spelling", "Old"), and left in the relatively neutral "dislike" and "disagree". I really don't think there's anything wrong with disagreeing with things, and disliking things would be fairly evident from one's responses anyway.

Let's see how it goes for a month.

i kinda like the "old". I like the options for 'teammates', would help clear up threads. but the CTs are a tad bit outnumbered. I feel bad for them already. Still its your site.

I would agree, in that a dislike button is simply being disdainful without offering an explanation. If a person disagrees with the contents or spirit of a post I think it would be better for the person to offer an explanation why he/she disagrees.

Honestly, from a personal standpoint, I like the disagree button much more than the dislike.. There are posts here that I do enjoy a great deal, I dont necessarily agree with the conclusions in the post and I may have enough expertise or understanding to really make a good case as to why or why not (especially if my disagreement is purely subjective). I understand where you guys are coming from, and it absolutely will be abused... but I dont think we should shut it down out of fear of that abuse.

*edited for clarity.. basically just reworded the first sentence to make it less redundant.

I think that the appropriateness of such things varies with audience. It can be refined in time.

I agree, disagree isn't as bad

After much zooming in on my phone I have realised that what I thought was a badly drawn carrot is in fact a spanner. I was wondering what rating a carrot would represent.

I like to keep my 'like' total higher than my post total, and I have 22 posts and 23 likes.

Damn! Now 23 posts. OK, I'm on hiatus.

Edit: I consider it an honor to be disliked by your sort, David Fraser! Or is it ilk. I always get confused.

Sorry I misread the post as wanting to keep your posts higher than likes and I thought I would remedy the situation. Ah well. No backsies ;-)

I was actually surprised that my total rating is now 23/1/0 (positive/neutral/negative) so dislike only counts as neutral. I don't know how you get a negative tally unless Mick decides to hit you with the warning stick, maybe.

And now I'm in like deficit. ... I can still breathe. I might survive.

There are no negative ratings. I removed them, as they were too negative. Seemed a bit impolite.

"Dislike" and "Disagree" are neutral. All the rest are positive.

Remember in the old system, the only option was "Like"

Warnings are a totally different system, only the moderators see them.
