There's a claim made on a YT video that "Planes are not allowed off course without permission from MITRE. " - the video itself is a rambling load of nonsense - I'm not going to post it - here's the link if you want to see it - the interesting bits are actually in the written commentary accompanying it.
So who or what is MITRE? It is Mitre Corporation - which, according to it's Wiki page is:
Of course this then shows ignorance about how air traffic control works - the NAS is an immensely complicated system.........but the system itself is not what approves course changes - that would be the controllers.
To say that MITRE has to approve course changes is the equivalent to saying that Microsoft or Apple approves every document you create using their products - it is just nonsense and demonstrates ignorance of the subject matter.

It developed the FAA's National Aerospace System (NAS) - which is presumably why the claim is made.....an American not-for-profit organization based in Bedford, Massachusetts and McLean, Virginia. It manages Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) supporting the Department of Defense (DOD), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on behalf of the Federal Judiciary, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
