Water injection was tried on some WWII aircraft engines.

Some post-war jets used water injection (including early Boeing 707s and B-52s, up to the B-52G).

The Harrier has water injection for power in the hover, since that's often an inappropriate situation for the afterburner.

E-8 JSTARS and E-3 AWACS also had it, since it came with the engine, but it's not really needed.

SA227-AC Metro III has it as well, that's a 1980 aircraft.

I think Brian was going for the other end if the scale, making the point that it's an old concept, not a new invention.
