Debunked: Fake Snow, Burning Snow.

I'm not exactly a scientific person, however I agree with Mick on this one. I've grown up in several states over the years, each one having different textures of snow, if any at all so when places such as Tennessee recieve so much snow in such a short period it's easy to see why they are so easily fooled. However, I feel it is completely irresponsible to come up with such an extreme answer. No matter where you are in the world the snow you recieve will always have dirt and other particles in it because it's not fully cleansed During the water cycle. Anyone who grew up in the north should have the common knowledge that you still hav to boil snow and send it through a strainer to clean it out if you wanted to make it drinkable. As for the smell of plastic, it's definitely not the snow you are smelling. Think about it, does smell like plastic as it is falling from the sky? How about before you take the lighter to it? Only after you have taken the lighter to it does t smell like plastic. Then the only reasonable answer is it's not the snow but from the butane itself. Instead of jumping to conclusions and making these ridiculous videos, please do some research because these kinds of things can send a lot of people with panic disorders among other things into chaos.

Perhaps this should be tried
It's not optimal science but it would be helpful and easy to achieve imo.

Burn nothing but let the lighter burn for a set time. Smell it
Let lighter cool.
Burn something (glass for instance) for a set time. Smell it.
Let lighter cool.
Burn snow for a set time. Smell it.
Then report the findings.
Then hypothesise on why those findings might have/could have occured without bias.

We had a fresh snowfall last night so out of curiosity I scooped up a bowlful to try to "melt" the snow with fire. I truly expected nothing except melted snow. To my shock it receded from the flame, it blackened, and it stunk like burnt styrofoam. It was exactly like the multiple videos I watched from New York, New Jersey, and Georgia.

I have lived with snow for years and I have never tried to put a flame to it before. I am not a chemistry expert and I do not want to jump to conclusions because of the unexpected. I found your site while looking for an answer to the puzzle of "blackened, singed, stinky" snow. The snow was very powdery, and it did contain some water. When I say receded that is exactly what it did; not melt, but recede like thin plastic. I put the blackened snow to my nose and smelled it as did my teenage son and our next door neighbor. We all smelled the burnt plastic odor, very strange. I was not wearing gloves and I was holding a large cold clump of snow in my bare hand. I am baffled. We dicussed what it could be, maybe pollution? I am currently searching for an explanation. Do you have an answer for the smell. It was not the flame that smelled, it was the snow. I am stumped.

The snow receded because there was not a lot of ice in it, it was fluffy. So as it melted, the water was wicked away.

When you sniffed the blacked snow you were smelling the soot and other incomplete combustion products from the flame you used. Try holding the flame against some het resistant glass (like a pyrex jug) to see it blacken it, then smell it as you do this, and after. Make sure you hold it the same length of time you did for the snow to get a good comparison.

Having grown up in the snow and worked in the ski patrol on our local ski field and having done and run snow survival courses, I thought the first video I saw of this idea that is an effect from chemtrails was pretty dumb and didn't make sense as it looked like how snow normally melts to me. I never like skiing in slush and I am glad to see so much good information for people who are just trying to melt snow for the first time here to help them understand about why it happens this way, but I thought some of you may like to see more information form Alex Ackerman, Alix Bryan and Mike Stone on this page. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/0...51875387487050":"og.likes"}&action_ref_map=[]

You will also get that smell from an ice cube from your freezer after holding a lighter underneath it.

Do the test again then put the snow in a heated pot on the stove. Does it melt? Does it taste like water?

Try burning plastic and compare the odor. Be sure to do that test outside.

Would a synthetic substance leave a residue or could it disappear completely when burned?
Eg, plastic leaves a hard melted blob behind.

Depends on the substance. I think you could probably make an aerogel of paraffin that would look like snow, but burn completely. Mind you it would probably burn in a bit of a flash.

Notice they never actually fully "burn" the snow. They just "burn" it a little bit. If they kept going, you'd be left with some dirty water.

it didn't recede like plastic. it melted and absorbed.

When we lit up snow as kids, the snow "receding" from the flame was exactly what happened. It was actually nice to look at. Nothing new or suspicious there, really.

The blackening is soot from the flame.

The stench, I don't know. It would probably be a good idea to try different kinds of flames to melt the snow, like a chimney fire, burning wood, stuff like that, to find out whether the source of the stench is the snow or the flame. Also: take the snow and let it melt. Take the snow and have it chemically analysed.

Well I saved a chunk of ice and I don't care what you all say about the lighter smell, it didn't smell like lighter sorry...burnt plastic is what I smell. I know what the black came from, but the smell came from what?

The lighter fuel. Hold it under a glass and see if it smells the same.

I was lighting a load of candles last night (romantic night in kind of thing) using a cheap long necked lighter, that always stinks of hot plastic when it has been used for any length of time

Right... because it's so much more likely that snow is made of plastic.

Plastics are often made from hydrocarbons, so is the butane fuel. Like has been suggested before, burn something other than the snow, like a piece of glass and then smell it. Unless you think the glass is also geo-engineered than it really should resolve your concerns.

Here is a devout chemtrail believer debunking the fake snow. He makes some interesting incidental comments about someone selling chemtrail testing kits for $50.

Dutchsinse debunks fake snow.....

the irony of his complaining about people not using logic and knowing nothing about science and having no place in any discussion and the amount of disinformation on youtube and how stupid people are and about all the new "fear porn of the week"...... is .....well....it's there to see :)

Takes a while to get into it - starts about 3 minutes, and is fairly slow going.....

His commentators are pretty thick too.....

A more complete explanation and demonstration of the fake snow saga

I don't know if I should be sad or happy for mankind that, in this internet information-sharing era, this is happening!

Has anyone hypothesised a reason for the fake snow yet? Who is next? What mix of chemtrail are they using? Do you think they take requests as the rain in the UK is getting monotonous.

Dutchsinse debunks fake snow.....

I'm still laughing at myself for foolishly having hope at the ending of this where he begins explaining persistent contrails - "I don't debate this at all, we already know what's causing a persistent contrail", it's caused... "by jet fuel exhaust mixing with moisture at a certain altitude and lingering for a long period of time" ......but then it gets all weird again about them "directing the air traffic to make persistent contrails over areas of big solar influx" for the sole purpose of SRM.

I have visions of Airliner Captain announcements "Ladies and Gentleman, can I have your attention please. We have been instructed by Air Traffic Control to detour from LAX to New Mexico. You should see other airlines joining us along the way, please don't be alarmed, it's a normal occurence"

It's worth linking Phil Plait's article to go along with the video: Atlanta Storm Was a Government Conspiracy? Snow Way!

I'm glad he included this in his column (and in the video -- the visual of the snowball in the pan at the 5:10 mark really illustrates this point quite well):

Another site tried to explain this away by saying the ice was sublimating, turning from a solid directly into a gas. This happens with dry ice, frozen carbon dioxide, but it seems clear to me that’s not what’s going on here, especially since you can actually see the snow soaking up the water.

A number of well-meaning folks have attempted to push sublimation as the answer to people's "observations", but that's simply not the case, as stated in Mick's original post.

I'd be rather curious to know this as well. Or, how people harboring those beliefs would explain the volume of precipitation which fell across multiple states, let alone a responsible mechanism or origin. I guess a winter storm on its own isn't exciting enough?

The irony is that in the UK there is some serious flooding in the South but the CT crowd are more concerned about snow in the US. I guess they we have to wait our turn.

I was considering starting a rumour that Monsanto have developed a flood resistant wheat seed and the plants have a waterproof coating ;-)

Mick..listen closely please. I'm a pretty smart woman. My daughter was valedictorian of her 2013 class (Athens, GA) and her siblings are following behind her. I think I'm doing a good job bringing up intelligent children. I saw the videos of "fake snow" coming across my facebook feed and actually laughed myself to sleep that night. The next day, I just had to go and get a snow ball and try the experiment myself. I used a soy candle not a lighter. The fact that I couldn't make the snowball produce one single drop of water (I have a video), the fact that it turned black...well those things didn't concern me but what did was the overwhelming smell of burning plastic that the ball produced. The smell was unmistakable and horrid. We have a wood burning stove in our house and occasionally a friend has come over and not realizing how hot the top gets, has put down a to-go box of food or a lego that they have picked up off the floor and that smell...that toxic burning plastic smell is something most of us are familiar with. This was NOT the smell of butane, this was NOT the smell of my soy candle....Brother is just was NOT. Trust me, I'm scratching my head as well. I did find some interesting articles that you might be interested in reading. Two are from that crazy conspiracy rag known to most of us as Popular Science. First article is titled: China's weather manipulation brings crippling snow storm. The second from the same magazine is called: Geo-engineering: Moscow mayor promises no snow this Winter. Just google them. Also please go to youtube and search for a video called Artificial snow creation Australia. This is a government sponsored geo-engineering project (besides the video you can also find lots of information online about this project designed to help alleviate ongoing drought conditions there). This is not conspiracy theory this is Science. The whole Western portion of our country is under a severe drought. In California it is historic. I saw on the news just last night that vineyards in California are starting to fail. California feeds a good portion of our nation. Do you not think that snow/rain is trying to be created here? Trust me, anything Australia, Russia or China can do, we can probably do better. Again, This is not hidden or a conspiracy theory, this is a fact. Also of interest for you may be searching "chemically nucleated snow" and last but not least an incredible video from MIT (that crazy conspiracy school) called "Using aerosol injections for geoengineering" a lecture from professor Joyce Penner. Joyce states that we are already creating rain and snow events in the United states (come on debunkers wake up!)...she is pro geo-engineering and is a designer of aerosols for this purpose. If you are smart enough to be a debunker then you are certainly smart enough or at least intuitive enough to understand behind every conspiracy theory is a bit of truth. Here is a link to the MIT lecture series video. http://video.mit.edu/watch/using-aerosol-injections-for-geoengineering-4828/ I'm sure during the holocaust there were people nearby going around saying "I think they are gassing people over there and then throwing them in ovens to destroy the evidence" and then of course, there were others who were saying "don't be ridiculous, if that were happening we would surely know about it" and then turning around and doing the one finger circle around the head to indicate CRAZY. This snow was like nothing I had ever smelled....bottom line. PS. I hope all of this reads well because I'm tired, I need to go to bed and I don't have time to read over and edit is needed. I've got to say, I have enjoyed your other debunks.

Cloud seeding is not geoengineering. This is a common mistake made by those who believe in chemtrails

Geoengineering proposals have been around for some time now but there is zero evidence that geoengineering of the type you are talking about has been implemented.

Could you (SAB) stick to the "butane soot smell" on snow, as that is the topic in this particular thread.
Try this.....
I just took my lighter and created soot on a pyrex glass kitchen measuring cup. I smelled it.....smells nasty.
Is the glass plastic ?....do I smell the glass burning, or am I smelling the soot on the glass ?
I'm smelling the soot, because the glass barely got warm.
I wiped the soot off with a wet towel...then smelled the glass again >>>no smell any more.

Could you try this, and see what happens, SAB ?

Also try this....take some snow and place it on your wood burning heater/stove. Let it melt away to nothing. Does it smell like weird burning plastic...like the Lego did ?

However, if the wick becomes too long, or an air current disturbs the flame's teardrop shape, small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. Any candle will soot if the flame is disturbed.

From the National Candle Associationhttp://www.candles.org/elements_wax.htmlCandle Wax Facts
All waxes are primarily hydrocarbons, whether the wax is of animal, vegetable, or petroleum origin. The chemical composition of all waxes used for candle-making is similar.
Waxes burn with a yellow flame due to the presence of carbon.
No specific type of wax or wax blend is considered "best" for candlemaking. All candle waxes - when provided in high-quality format - have been shown to burn cleanly and safely.
No candle wax has ever been shown to be toxic or harmful to human health.
There is no such thing as a soot-free wax. All organic compounds when burned will emit some carbon (soot) due to incomplete combustion. Sooting is primarily a factor of wick length and disturbance of the flame's steady teardrop shape.
Content from External Source
Soy wax candles are not100% natural. Chemicals are added to the byproduct of soy to make a waxy substance and even more chemicals are added for the soy wax to be able to hold fragrance oil. Fragrance oil is not a natural substance, so if the soy candle has fragrance in it, it is even further from being 100% natural. Even soy candles made with essential oils are not “all natural” because the wax is chemically produced from a soy bean. The soy bean does not come out of the ground ready to melt down for a candle.

meaning, the soot is still gonna smell. maybe even worse then butane.

I also found this but haven't researched it claims in depth so not sure if its true.

Burn something else with your soy candle, like a glass, spoon or aluminum foil. Make sure to get a black mark on it and then smell the black mark. I bet it smells the same.

Not exactly sure what your kids education has to do with anything though.

@SAB and maybe burning an icecube is better. people don't realize it but snow does have a smell, like icecubes.

This was NOT the smell of butane, this was NOT the smell of my soy candle....

Butane if practically odorless when it burns properly.

No, it was the smell of incomplete combustion. The smell of soot and hydrocarbon byproducts of the soy candle burning with the local air supply restricted.

Mick....I have to disagree....I live on a farm and I am pretty familiar with incomplete combustion....this was different. Hey, I'm not saying it was anything nefarious...the smell was odd and toxic to say the least. I actually enjoy some of the smells of incomplete combustion. I know that sounds strange but from tweaking out our generator to working on farm equipment even those wonderful and plentiful bowls of weed I smoked in college, I've had plenty of experience with incomplete combustion....that was NOT the smell of that, not even close. Cloudspotter...please if you can take the time listen to this lecture...I also linked the same one in my above post but it is worth the listen. The spraying of aerosols (new and improved cloud seeding) is being done....and has been done...as the professor states in this video...."We" (they) have lowered the temperatures of the Earth already. This video is from a MIT video lecture series from a few years ago, Joyce Penner is an aerosol expert and a proponent of geo-engineering not a crazy conspiracy theorist. Please take the time to watch...she says we have been SPRAYING AEROSOLS and that YES they have been working to cool the Earth although not to the degree that had hoped for. http://video.mit.edu/watch/using-aerosol-injections-for-geoengineering-4828/ Yes, the beginning of this lecture is about huge aerosols injections that have been contemplated, those that could replicate volcanic eruptions but just slide your slider up to the 2 minute 17 second mark and pause it...now read..and then please continue to listen. They have called it "cloud seeding" but you will see, she uses the term aerosol injections. Does that have anything to do with our snow? I have no idea. I have also had people say...perhaps this was water that was picked up from the Gulf of Mexico with chemicals from the BP oil spill clean-up. I do know the toxic smell of burning chemicals was unmistakable. I took a ball to the house of my neighbor who worked as an aerospace engineer and also taught at the University of Georgia. I heated up a snow ball for him with a candle and asked him "What does this smell like to you?" and he said..."it smells like we need to take it out of the house so we don't end up with brain cancer" (LOL). He is such a salt of the Earth person and not prone to any conspiracy theory. In fact if I could get him to use the internet, (He is 82 and doesn't use the internet) he would love this sight. I told him about the "imcomplete combustion theory and he said..."that was complete combustion, of what, I don't know" Who really knows?

I too have experience of combustion processes but I haven't had a sample to smell for myself. What I would like to interject is, stating the obvious, snow is polluted both from the air where it's formed and from sitting on the ground. It stands to reason even an odourless/sootless flame might produce a "smell". Good luck trying to convince me it must be from chemtrails.
