Photos of Planes and Contrails (That you took yourself)

Nice pics!

I saw the pairs of contrails coming from small 1-engine planes also more often above Holland past years, not able to identify them (militairy, so not on any flight-tracker).
So You use a radiosignal to get track of them? Jan

Thanks, Jan. Just a radio scanner. Sometimes if you are lucky then you will pick up their intentions and request for low level runs on UHF. Most of the low level activity is pre-booked with specific slots, but some is ad-hoc.

The region covering Wales is known as North Wales Military Training Area (North and South). The upper limits of the airspace restrictions are 66,000 feet. On weekends the restrictions are relaxed allowing commercial flights to use portions of the airspace.

See following guide for the Low Flying Area 7 (Snowdonia, Wales) where the images of the Typhoons were taken.

The USAF also use the area for their low flying. F-15E Strike Eagle from RAF Lakenheath.

First I thougth you made these pictures from another Airplane, but now I´m realising that you sit and wait somewhere on the ground (or better said on top of a high mountain) and wait for aircrafts flying below you to catch them. Wow! Thanks for these pictures...

... more pictures with aerodynamic contrails from the wings would be fine, they are very usefull to react on a typical chemmie-video with the KC-10-fleet.

Its called the Mach Loop and it is a mecca for planespotters trying to take photos such as what Teej has achieved.

No problem. The following were taken in Axalp, Switzerland. A bit higher to climb for these up at around 7,000 feet. Swiss F-18 Hornets.

Hi all, you have a great place here, I have been a regular lurker of your information to help with my own debunking ... how you do it and remain civil is a marvel to me, so Mike, Jazzy, Jay and all the rest ... I salute and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Needing some help of my own now, I have a regular on my page whom has linked this photo, from the Chemtrails Equals Treasons' page and is positively crowing that it cannot be normal, I know it is, but am having problems the Google image sourcing and can't find out what it is from ... so ask you lurvely gents and gals if you can help out ... thank you so much.:D

Welcome! This appears to be racetrack contrails, see here: http://contrailscience.com/racetrack-contrails/

Awesome pics! I love jets!

The Canadian Astronaut and actual Social-Media-Star Chris Hadfield posted a lot of pictures taken from the ISS during the 35th ISS-Mission he had comandend.

And there are a lot of pictures of contrails taken from space:

This is a great one, because of the visible Shadows:

... and this is also a great one:
You can see how Mountains make a "border" for the moisty air. On one side, there is only mist with some contrals/cirrus in it, on the other Side of the mountains clouds apear.

I tried tineye but it wasn't found - yet.

It's remarkably similar to this, taken Christmas 1944 near the German border:

I hope that helps.

As a general comment - these recent pictures are truly stunning.

Showing the differential affect of wind - crossing contrails over the center of the North Island of New Zealand - the SW wind at altitude blows across one contrail, spreading it out into a sheet, and along the other, which shows little expansion.

Taken from the Desert Road January 2011 - Mt Ruapehu to the left, Ngauruhoe to the right - both active volcanoes FYI :)

I'd like to get some advice on identifying this plane, said to be a KC-135:

some stills captured from the film:

Jay - The video quality is terrible, looks manipulated to me to prevent identification. Looks more like a 747 to me. The fuslage looks completely wrong and actually looks bigger than than a 707/KC-135 plus you should see some indication of the tail boom. US KC-135's did not have winglets last time I had them on the flight line (2010), think same is true for the Brit and French versions also but there was a proposed program to finally install them.

Hi Jay,

Not an Airbus A380, but a Boeing 747 (Air France). It just doesn't sit right for an A380. The 747 has that more banana shaped fuselage when viewed at height. The wing chord is also too small for an A380 along with the size of the wing lets. The 747 in combination with the wing lets has that more graceful look as the wing tapers before the wing tip.

747 over Farnborough several years ago.

Can I just thank you for your links and photos TEEJ, they have really sparked my interest. I have seen a few aircraft when in the army, and many years back we used to take picnics out to Cowden Ranges to watch the A10's. I have been looking at a short camping holiday and I think a visit to the Mach Loop is called for.

Thanks for the input. The video is poor quality, and all that is necessary is to show it is not a KC-135 as claimed.
Anyone else, especially pilots, please let me know what you think.

No problem, Dave. Thanks. I only wish that I had the time when I was serving in the RAF to visit the Mach Loop. It was a lot busier in the 1980s and early 90s! Some more links that will be useful on planning your visit.

No idea where this should go but this is the aircraft activity that I'm aware of at 12:30 AM Central time, in the contiguous, USA. Just a perspective of traffic when we are "sleeping".

Sunset:

Shadow on the cloud:

Don't take this wrong but, these look photoshopped. The bottom edge of these contrails appear unnatural. I see what appears to be remnants of uneven cropping - at least to my eyes.

I can send the originals with the EXIF data - should I? I see no reason why I should lie. Could you tell me one?

I see nothing wrong with the photos. Dramatically backlit contrails behind a cloud layer, casting a shadow. I can't even figure out what "uneven cropping" might mean.

Many of the edges look consistent with cropping an image.

In the circle on the bottom left, the left edges of the trails look like they were cut with a razor blade. In my experience, this looks consistent with a cropping.

In the top circle, this group of pixels looks consistent with what you might see if an editor failed to delete all unwanted portions of a cropping - leaving behind some stray, unwanted pixels.

In the rectangle, it looks like to me like the contrails could have been layered on top of the background and somebody did an unsteady job of erasing along the bottom of the contrail. It's a bit difficult to explain so i made a video and posted it here: http://youtu.be/tCdzUaae6ag.

With my editing experience, this is what my eyes see.

Ah, I always think of "cropping" as trimming the edges of something. I'd call what you describe masking or blending.

I disagree though. The left edge is the shadow of the plane. The random pixel has various possible causes, and the slight darker bottom edge just looks like a variation in the trail. While it could have been modified (beyond normal framing, sharpening, and levels), I see no compelling evidence that it has. Nor is it particularly important either way.

You say I'm lying? OK, tell me the original that you want to have from the series:

serie_9v-skd.jpg

And I'm still waiting for the answer:

I'd like to see dsc_4832.jpg untouched by anything. Straight off the camera memory card.

I've done a zillion composites over the years and i'm simply explaining what my trained eye sees. I'm not saying i'm right, i'm just explaining what i see. It looks like a composite. No different than a trained musician hearing a violin in a song when the sound is actually a keyboard instrument.

I'm not in the business of assessing motive.
