for those interested in technical information about a/c this may be of some interest - Boeings 1st Quarter 2012 ETOPS operations report that has a dozen or so pages of data on engien failure rates, but also the number of ETOPS flights across the Atlantic and Pacific as an indicator of aviation activity.

for those unaware of what ETOPS is the acronym variously stands for "Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards", Extended Twin-engined OperationS or alternatively Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim.

It is a series of rules governing the operation of twin engined aircraft that operate at considerable distances from the nearest airfield they can land on - which is where they would immediately divert to if an engine failed - the wiki article has as good a summary as any.
