Hey I'm mainly a lurker here and not a UFO believer.. however, I did see something as a young person that I didn't understand and would love to hear anyone's guesses as to what it might have been.
Around 1978, my high school friends were in my car heading to band practice and we took a shortcut through the University of Richmond.
It was late afternoon in the winter probably 4ish and the sun was still up but there was only indirect light as we were driving through a forest.
We were driving up a hill and as we came out of the forest, there was a large parking lot on our left and right. Almost exactly when we drove into this large open area, we saw what looked exactly like a classic movie UFO.
It was moving right to left from about 2:00 to 9:00 just above the trees at the far side of the parking lot.
It had to be rather close to us because It crossed approximately 200 yds in roughly 3 or 4 seconds and the open space in front of us was probably a quarter of a mile at the most, before the road went back into the forest.
The appearance was exactly movie style.. A nearly fluorescent green orb with a yellowish ring around it and I remember hints of purple but I can't visually place them any longer.
Yes it was spinning and wobbling and had a slight arcing motion where it was probably closest to us at 2:00 farthest away around 11:00 and then arcing back to our left when it exited over the trees about 9:00.
Considering it was directly above the trees and possibly above the parking lot at its farthest from us, we guessed it was approximately the size of a basketball.
Both I and the drummer saw it as soon as we drove into the open area and we yelled out so that the keyboardist in the back seat saw it right before it left our view.
And to clarify, I was the leader of a a no drugs band l.. everybody was totally clean
Our immediate thought was that somehow University of Richmond students had set this up as a prank.
But at that time, a remote controlled aircraft was a buzzy little thing that would have probably not been visible at that distance and certainly would never have made it across the parking lot at the required speed.
Of course a balloon could have looked exactly like this but even a blimp could not have made it across parking lot that fast.
We talked about a Batman like searchlight of some sort, but it was still very light and the image displayed movement, it was definitely spinning, so we crossed that one out pretty quickly. It would have required some kind of hologram that I don't think we even and have today.
And then we went into our busy lives and kind of forgot about it. Every once in awhile we reminiscently bring it up but still had no idea what we were looking at.
Of course this is so ancient and I have absolutely no documentation whatsoever, but I'm wondering wondering if anybody is aware of any hoaxes or similar events that have been explained.
Today you might pull this effect off with multiple UAVs turning on and off across our horizon in the dark.
But there was nothing like that back then so open to any and all ideas!
