What I've noticed is that on sites like Infowars.com, moderators simply do not exist. Comments sections are utterly open season to absolutely whatever statement you'd like to make and any theory can be espoused (even anti-Jones ones). I thinks this chaotic mash of ideas is like a Mobius strip of fear that powers itself. The 'diversity' of theories makes confirmation bias that much simpler.
That type of environment lends itself to exaggeration and one-upmanship where people will tout new and outrageous ideas and claims so that they can feel personally validated in the social group. No fact-checking at all would ever be done and they encourage each other to constantly raise the bar in a round-robin of ever escalating stories about various conspiracies. Just look how the whole HAARP thing has expanded to include NEXRAD, etc. Somebody decides that radar returns look "funny" and no one challenges it. They just all agree, exitedly, and a new "truth" is adopted and expanded upon.
