The problem is that the text is hard-wired in the post to be black, but the background is not set to anything. So when blackend makes the background black you can't see anything.

This is an issue when copying in formatted text.

I'll experiment to see if it's something to do with "blackend", which is rather old. Xenforo now has a built-in dark mode we could try switching to, but I suspect the problem would remain.

Thanks for following up @Mick West ! In the future, I'll also make sure to use cmd+shift+v (Mac) or ctrl+shift+v (Windows), which I believe are the correct key combos to paste the raw text without any formatting. I believe that will also prevent the issue from happening.
 
I tried it on a fresh XF forum using their modern dark mode, and it was the same, so the problem is with the BB code

I don't think there's a need for colored text, so I'll see about disabling it.

The intermediate fix is to always paste as plain text (Shift-Opt-Cmd-V on Mac), or to select all and then remove formatting after pasting.
 
I'm going to try to enable the more modern version of the dark theme, it might be a while, as the old theme is rather crufty
 
ok so i (and everyone else) lose color for something that almost never happens. thanks for the info.
It's not about color, which hopefully I'll be able to restore. It's about dark text on a dark background causing confusion to people who use the dark theme. Right now I favor communication over aesthetics, but hopefully we can have both.
 
Looking into it more, copying and pasting colored text should already strip off the color. And it seems to do that for me.

Database analysis shows that the majority of recent problem posts with [COLOR=... come from @Mendel

So @Mendel, what are you doing different? What browser are you using? Any forum specific add-ons? DM me if needed.

i thought you already did.

how about if you restore the now broken [BUNK] tags that allowed us to put claims in pink boxes? i could put my signature in a pink box...and people can use that for headings in long posts etc.

or maybe you could also add a [BUNK1] tag thats a grey box so the guys dont have to use pink for headers? (i assume that mods still use green, yellow and red boxes, so grey and pink shouldnt confuse with that too much.)
 
So it seems like the issue is a combination of (possibly) two things

First there's a bug in the Xenforo code where pasting text that includes a table will make it not remove colors. I've submitted a detailed bug report to Xenforo, and hopefully, they will be able to fix it. But that bit of code looks like a bit of a mess and might take a while.

@Mendel and possibly others seem to be using a browser that triggers this bug more than normal browsers like Chrome, even when not copying a table. I can't narrow this down easily as I can't repeat it.
 
We're on Xenforo 2.3.6. The next version of XF will be 2.4, and includes a new editor. It's likely they will defer any fix until after that, as it's editor specific. XF 2.4 has unfortunately been in the pipeline since September and has missed the stated "release between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025"

Anyway, I might end up fixing it myself.
 
I am wondering if it is a good idea to make it possible to adjust the width, size etc of inserted-linked youtube videos?
I am probably not the only one that dislikes the huge inserted videos.. Perhaps I am alone, and then.. forget this post. :)

Are you using the "Full Width" theme (bottom left)?
 
I've disabled the COLOR tag, and removed it from the editor. This seems to fix the problem.
The color tag is working fine.

@Mick West the site has been really slow for me for the past like 4 days. Pretty much anything I do that makes a request to the backend takes up to 30 seconds to respond, and sometimes it times out. The average response time is probably around 15 seconds. Strangely, it's only when I'm logged in. The site is fast (normal) when I'm logged out.

ETA: Posting this message timed out twice. I've manually cleared all cache (local storage, session storage, cookies, and cache storage). Still slow.

It would probably be better practice to "paste as plain text" (or Ctrl-Shift-V) when you copy HTML from a different site. Different browsers handle this in different ways, but when you copy a selected region of HTML, the browser takes the CSS behind that HTML and injects it as inline styling in the HTML tags. This makes the styling more difficult to overwrite, which is probably the issue with the theme.

@Mick West Some rich text editors have a paste mode property that either strips all formatting or allows all formatting on paste. I've never used XenForo, but if it lets you override the "onpaste" event, you can just do it yourself with some javascript. Just clear out all styles.
