That is correct, except I didn't see a plane, that is why I immediately jumped to the conclusion it was a laser beam..
Laser beams tend to be invisible, unless your looking straight into one. (not recommended!!) The only way you get to see them otherwise is when they pass through stuff like smoke which scatters some of the light from the beam, or when they hit something solid in which case they show a point of light on the thing they hit (the sniper laser sight 'red dot' so beloved of Hollywood action films is a good example of this)Where would the laser beam be coming out of? I took this photo 10 years ago and at the time didn't know what kind of weather conditions were required for contrail formation and I didn't know that contrails could cast shadows the way they do.
