Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Yeah, water that has contained fluoride for the past several decades and that everyone in the US is drinking or a drug (legal or not legal) whose stereotype is to cause people to be lazy couch potatoes.

Hello,

I am new here. One of my good friends is a huge CT person. He spends lots of time on 9/11 and Fake Sandy Hook, Chemtrails new age woo and the whole shabang. It's nice to find some help to debunk what he's saying.

One of the big tricks he and others like him seem to play is the "infinite debunking trick".. If you explain how contrails work, they'll give you a link to the supposed 'patents' that would create chemtrails, if you try and go after that, they'll throw some other thing at you, and then I just get tired of having to look up all these claims.

I'll probably mostly lurk here, but just wanted to say hello! Good to meet all sides in these discussions here--you all seem pretty intelligent--even if I think your CTs are loopy.

Welcome.

And yes, what you describe up above is known as the "Gish Gallop":

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Gish_Gallop

The Gish Gallop, named after creationist Duane Gish, is the debating technique of drowning the opponent in such a torrent of half-truths, lies, and straw-man arguments that the opponent cannot possibly answer every falsehood in real time. The term was coined by Eugenie Scott of the National Center for Science Education. Sam Harris describes the technique as "starting 10 fires in 10 minutes."

It is indeed annoying, and difficult to combat.

Thank you jay. I understand, I think many of us discovered the believers-community when a friend or a relative went in it...

You're obviously right, I am not a native speaker. It's the reason why I spent a few weeks on this forum without posting messages. Eventually, it seems that my English is terrible ...
Well you may find that many of those who should write and speak English well, don't.

There is a common misuse for instance, of the words "there, their, and they're", and using "of" when the word should be "have".

Hi there! Mike here. Came across your site via Facebook regarding a JFK quote about enslaving the whole country. At least the JFK quote part was debunked. Thank You.

I could understand what you were saying just fine. (which is more then I can say for some people) :)

welcome aboard

Hello Metabunkers, was reading some pretty bizarre material about volcanic activity in the Canary Islands, bunch of other related stuff from a quirky journalist (international intrigues, finance and what-not). Came here on a fact-checking mission.

I found a couple of threads here involving Satam's passport and Richard Wozniak account of finding the passport. The information and photo came from a post I made over at ATS. I would like to make a few comments in those threads.

Hi everyone. I'm from the Hungarian Skeptics and we find this site and contrailscience.com incredibly useful for our activities. Chemtrail belief is spreading in Hungary, and we have set up a web site, chemtrail.hu, to debunk it in Hungarian. I'm happy to join you.

Hi All, I'm a proud South African...been reading this site for a couple of years and i thought i might as well join up...Thx for the good info over the years

Hi my name is self evidently Simon. I came here because I am addicted to the ongoing drama of Malaysian Airlines MH370. I've worked in all manner of aviation and airline roles and I don't accept the spoonfed mashed facts we're being fed. I live in New Zealand.

Hi I am Chiaran Singh

Hello everyone,
My daughter and I have been noticing a lot of contrails which we believe is altering the weather.
Let me explain: we live in the desert just south of Las Vegas, the weather here has always been sunny, in the summer usually very hot and sunny. Lately it's been raining a lot, it rarely rained here in the past, last summer, it seemed it rained more then it was sunny, just before it rains, usually the day before, we've noticed contrails by the hundreds even in the shape of an A with a circle around it.
We always know its going to rain when we see this. I've lived here many years, 2013 and 2014 is the first time I've ever seen these contrails at this scale and the first time I've seen it rain so much.

There are a few other types of suspicious things that happen here but the chem or contrails has completely altered the weather here, so they are right on the top of suspicious occurrences.
We are happy to find that others are watching these contrails as well. We will start taking pictures and post them if we can.

Ali & Jessie (my daughter)

Welcome, and although it is not my place to do this (add a "welcome"...that is usually a function of one of the Staff members).

Still I felt compelled to address this. If you (both) spend some time and search around, (here on this site) many of your questions and "concerns" will be answered.

I happen to, currently, live in Southern California, although some years ago, I resided in Las Vegas. The SoCal region is currently experiencing a prolonged drought. (I'm not "Up To Speed" on other regional climactic statuses). Many reasons for a drought can exist. (One thing to look at online are terms "El Nino" and "El Nina", as just two examples).

But, rest assured that when the study of meteorology, and the ways that it can change weather patterns, both regionally and globally (two very different things), much can be learned. Meteorology is a science, but not a "Law"....and this goes to the other descriptions that define a 'theory', versus an 'hypothesis'...which tends to stray from the topic a bit.

Meteorology as a science does, as all science, rely on observation and repeatability of observation, anticipation, and repeated observation that is predictable. But, it is very complex.

In summary: Please check out the many threads on this subject, there is a lot of very excellent information. And, many people to answer any questions.

Hello, all, I've been lurking here for a month or so, and I've liked what I've seen. I would label myself a skeptic, but I like to see evidence for unusual claims broken down in detail even if I find them silly to begin with. I've been impressed with the ability of Metabunk's participants to do this, and I appreciate the general attitude of fairness and honesty here. I hope to learn a lot from you folks.

Hello! I am antago; I think for myself and make conclusions based upon intuition as well as collected data without conforming to extreme systems of "acceptable conduct", "scientifically approved analyses", and "professionalism". I am here to discuss interesting matters relevant in today's world.

Welcome to MB!

I hope I'm not taking your quotes out of context, but there is "acceptable conduct" that is followed here. It tends to lend itself to the site having more of a "professionalism" type feel.

And while this sites topic sometimes are relevant to today's world the sites focus is on specific claims of evidence and not more broader "matters" in today's world.

Hi, I am new to Metabunk, having been introduced by a link to a discussion here from a JREF thread, where I post as LSSBB. I participate there in discussions across the board, mainly 9/11 CT and other CT. Thanks for letting me join!

I have a degree in computer science. Served 5 years in the military as a Hawk Missile electronics specialist. I have also worked on several IT projects supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff and joint services interoperability efforts at DISA and other places.

I have a longstanding passion for physics and regularly read graduate level material such as Misner, Thorne and Wheeler's Gravitation http://books.google.com/books/about/Gravitation.html?id=w4Gigq3tY1kC

I became interested in such topics as 9/11 "conspiracy theories" because the reported physical evidence is clearly inconsistent with the conclusions reported by NIST and the 9/11 Commission. I will address specifics in the appropriate contexts.

Hmmm. Welcome, but a bit of advice, you might wish to be absolutely certain that you choose specific aspects to post about. On the 9/11 topic especially. Just personal experience, mind you! ;)

I'm just a member here, not part of staff, BTW!!

Hi everybody! I'm here! I am here because I desperately wanted refute the specious claim that the desert tortoise is an endangered species. Having lived 52 of my almost 58 years in the Mojave desert or the Great Basin, I feel that I have the chops to answer. Besides, look at my handle - I HAVE to be the expert, right? :)

The tortoise is a very cool little reptile. My family had two of them, at different times when I was a small child. They are actually pretty smart as far as showing up at dinnertime. However, they are definitely not demonstrative, other than letting you scratch their head or neck.

There are a seriously large number of tortoises in the wild. When they started collecting tortoises in California to make way for a solar station, they expected to find 36 adult tortoises on 3200 acres. Based on that, let's say that there is one tortoise per 100 acres. Hell, call it 1 tortoise per 1,000 acres! That would mean that Nevada, with more than 70 MILLON acres, has at least 70 thousand tortoises. Since I did some serious underestimating, I think it's safe to say that there are more than 100 thousand tortoises in Nevada alone.

To my mind, this invalidates the premise that the BLM used to try to limit Cliven Bundy to 150 cattle in his herd - a number which, I have been told but do not know myself, is not enough to be economically feasible. In other words, they were trying to put him out of business. I guess he should have built a solar power plant instead - then they would have removed the tortoises for him...

The honest truth is, ravens kill far more tortoises than anything else in the desert. When I was a kid, we would hike out in the desert looking for raven's nests, because we knew we would find multiple juvenile tortoise shells in each nest. Ravens think of young tortoise as a delicacy. So if you want to protect the desert tortoise, take a shotgun and blow the crud out of every raven yo can find in the desert. Believe me, you won't be lacking for targets!

Greetings all,
I discovered this forum during a search for info on the Cliven Bundy Nevada rancher issue, (4/13/14). That thread seemed sensibly populated, and since I enjoy rational and informed discussions I have joined, and look forward to a good time, as well as being a productive participant.

It is usually better to let others describe you, but since a little background is requested, I will say;

I view myself as a curmudgeon that appreciates informed discussions, but I also don't suffer fools lightly.

I am an active participant in the Hubpages.com Political and Social Issues forums.

I think I can honestly say that the majority of the time my forum participation would put me right at the top of the "Forum etiquette" pyramid, but must admit that in order to respond properly to some yahoos - I may wander down around the middle of the pyramid - oh, well.

That's me.

Hello Everyone....

I also stumbled upon this site while searching for information relating to the Bundy situation....I have thoroughly enjoyed reading some of the discussions here, and I look forward to reading many more! As I see fit, I will contribute, but as of now, I envision myself mostly being a lurker. Thanks everyone!

A hearty TANSTAFL to every seeker of truth albeit so rare and fragile

Hi everybody!

I found these forums via a link someone posted on the Unexplained Mysteries forums with a debunking of the Loch Ness monster pic. I'd already posted a similar explanation there that the reason the boat and wake was so faded looking compared to the other boats seen in the area was possibly because the image was a composite of overlapping images, one with the boat and one without.

Anyway, this place looks interesting so I thought I'd sign up and see how things go.

Greetings! I'm Matt, came hear (glad it did!) after getting fed up being ridiculed for not believing in Chemtrails. I seem to have a large group in my social sphere who believe in Chemtrails and I am always looking for ways to shut them up. I'm sure you all understand how futile this is, but the fight for shedding light on the truth continues!

Hi guys! Someone told me about this website on twitter and said it has great info on stuff I am particually interested in

Stumbled on this site. Wonderful source of information to fight misinformation. The Internet has provided such a great source to spread bad data.

Hi
I am not sure where to post or if this site is even the appropriate place for a discussion on this topic.
It is a person with a medical type claim.
Do I start a thread? Does that start a discussion?
