Raleigh, N.C. – PPP’s latest national poll finds the American public differing along partylines on many conspiracy theories involving issues like global warming and the Iraq War,
although some of the more bizarre ideas merit bipartisan skepticism.
The poll finds 28% of voters believe that a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is
conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government, or
New World Order. 34% of Republicans and 35% of independents believe in the New
World Order threat compared to just 15% of Democrats.

44% of voters believe the Bush administration intentionally misled the public about
weapons of mass destruction to promote the Iraq War, while 45% disagree. 72% of
Democrats believed the statement while 73% of Republicans did not. 22% of Democrats,
33% of Republicans and 28% of independents believe Saddam Hussein was involved in
the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Just 6% of voters think Osama bin Laden is still alive.

There is an intense partisan divide on whether or not global warming is a hoax: 58% of
Republicans agree that it is a conspiracy, while 77% of Democrats disagree. 20% of
Republicans believe that President Obama is the Anti-Christ, compared to 13% of
independents and 6% of Democrats who agree. 51% of Americans believe there was a
larger conspiracy at work in the JFK assassination, while 25% think Lee Harvey Oswald
acted alone. 29% believe aliens exist and 21% believe a UFO crashed at Roswell in 1947.
“Even crazy conspiracy theories are subject to partisan polarization, especially when
there are political overtones involved,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy
Polling. “But most Americans reject the wackier ideas out there about fake moon
landings and shape-shifting lizards.”

The full survey is very interesting, and includes the chemtrail theory:

This 5% unfortunately does not tell us much, as it seems to be about the percentage of people who will answer "yes" to just about any question:

The breakdowns are interesting:

So a chemtrail believer tends to be:
  • Slightly more Republican than Democrat
  • Not a "moderate", they tend to identify towards either end of the liberal-conservative spectrum
  • Both males and females, but females are a bit more likely to be unsure about the topic
  • Not Black. Perhaps because these types of conspiracy are not popular in Black culture?
  • Young. The chemtrail demographic is strongly skewed towards those under the age of 30.

Anecdotally, this seems about right. The "hard core" chemtrail believers are typically from the 2% in the middle-aged and older crowd, both male and female. But when there are outreach session - like demonstrations, then the people who listen to them are the younger crowd.

This also misses a quite significant chunk of people under the age of 18, older teenagers, where belief in chemtrails may well be even higher than 17%.

Professional Poll shows 5% of Americans are Chemtrail Believers, 8% unsure

A professional polling firm surveyed 1,247 registered voters asking the following question and obtained these results:

Q17

Do you believe that the exhaust seen in the sky
behind airplanes is actually chemicals sprayed
by the government for sinister reasons, or not?
Do 5%
Do not 87%
Not sure 8%

The poll surveyed many other conspiracy theories. For example, 4% of registered voters believe that the world is run by Reptilian Shape Shifters, 7% are not sure.

Interesting. . . people who didn't vote for a Democrat or a Republican Presidential candidate registered a 23% response regarding chemicals being sprayed from aircraft. . . .

Wait. What...?

20% of Republicans believe that President Obama is the Anti-Christ, compared to 13% of independents and 6% of Democrats who agree.

1 in 16 democrats believe that the leader of their own party is the anti-christ?!

Sometimes you just gotta say: America is a strange place.

I wonder about the accuracy of the poll. It's just a random phone poll, maybe it's skewed by people who just enjoy giving random crazy answers.

First, they can not run chem trails through the exhaust, they found that it acts in reverse and is discussed on one of their patents. Secondly, both chemtrails and contrails exist today, all you have to do is have the patience to sit back and watch near an airport with high altitude bombers and distinguish the difference. In case you don't understand I put a you tube video out to demonstrate the differences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQLMpRWfsqY But I am sure you are going to argue against logic and claim one is 10 feet higher or lower or some kind of mumbo jumbo. It is simple, they're making them and I have seen the external tanks on the low altitude ones with a good set of specs.

If you can see these external tanks, then why are there no photos of them?

The pollster was one of the more accurate in the 2012 and the 2008 presidential campaign. I know any one poll can be a outlier and without other polls polling the same subjects we are left to wonder a bit.

Thanks for putting in the work, but what would you have us do? The people who are awake already know about chemtrails, and some of us know the only way to stop this is to kill the people who are doing it. So, who is going to go out and take the first shot? As for everyone else, IMO they just really do not care as long as they can get through the day without walking into a phone pole while they're head-down staring catatonically into the screen of their smartphone.

The politicians aren't going to stop it. The corporations aren't going to stop it. Only 2% of the population even cares, and that's not enough to stop anything in a peaceful manner.

He's far overestimating how many people believe in "chemtrails".

i'm surprised they didn't use "statistics" like this reader poll (see sidebar on left) to say that over 60% of peopel believe int them!

BTW the poll is stil open, and I've seen it touted on a couple of chemtals sites lately for people to go and vote, so by all means have your say.....

I doubt either of those could be considered scientific polls (edit to add: looks like the second one is but still seems skewed). I personally still think 2% is high. I don't have anything to back it up except I've yet to actually meet anyone that believed in them. I'll meet Moon hoax believers from time to time but have yet to meet anyone that believes in "chemtrails". I've also yet to meet anyone that actually believes in bigfoot, mind controlling TV, or lizard people.

M Borong linked to the same poll as I did. It's a random phone survey of 1,247 registered voters, see:

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2011/PPP_Release_National_ConspiracyTheories_040213.pdf

So it's not representative of of the actual population, just those that vote, and take calls from phone surveys.

Clearly not a musician then...

Indeed, I'd reckon that there are certain demographics where it's quite high. Young rebellious people seem much more open to the idea. Anyone with a bit of a counter-culture bent. There's quite a few suchlike here in Venice, CA.

The crosstabs in the poll reflect this:

Both sides of the political extremes have higher chemtrail belief and the middle has none. The other thing to take into account is the margin of error which is +/- 2.8 percent. So overall 5% can be as low as 2.2%. My take on this is that the vast majority of voting inclined people do not believe in chemtrails or at least not willing to go on record saying they do.

I dare say the vast majority have never even heard of chemtrails.

If the poll had been "Do you believe in chemtrails?" it would need 3 options. 1 - Yes, 2 - No, 3 - Pardon, what on earth is a chemtrail?

Yes you are probably right. The other thing to keep in mind is that this survey asked about many CT's and at what point did the respondents start experiencing question fatigue?

And what kind of person actually takes these surveys seriously? Really, who would spend 5-10 minutes listening to a robot and pressing buttons?

I think pretty much anything that gets less than 5% could quite possibly be just people either pressing random buttons to make things go faster, or people deliberately choosing the "craziest" answer just for laughs.

I think if the survey was taken during the Bush administration the outcome would be different .
