There was a lot of talk this week about a SpaceX rocket possibly colliding with the moon:
Was it authorized? Is there any penalty? Did it really decapitate astronaut Neil Armstrong III? Billie Joe Armstrong?
Snopes debunked a video from Valuetainment, but then a rather zoomed-in still was found:
The still was also debunked, though as netizens promptly noted that the craft lacked the Balkenkreuz EM usually insists on...

This week I have been working on installing a foundation for my garden office. A lot of digging. The Sun has been brutal: non-stop blue sky and bright, hot Sun, not ideal for digging a big hole.
Yesterday, at around 3:30 pm, I remembered the partial solar eclipse was coming, and I hadn't prepared, so I nipped inside and knocked up some solar glasses (picture below). It took about 5 minutes to find where I'd stashed the Baader foil and then about another 10 minutes to tape them over some old glasses, after removing the lenses.
Just 15 minutes later I went out to test them, and it was cloudy from horizon to horizon, and it stayed that way until about 9:30 am today when I had just resumed digging!
That old joke about buying new astro-hardware means two weeks of continuous cloud is so true!
(This post probably should have been on the Synchronicity thread because it sure felt like one of those coincident things

There was a partial eclipse some years ago, and I taped a section of foil from a potato chip bag over a microscope slide, then taped it over my binoculars. It worked remarkably well.

My eclipse viewing kit was even simpler. Lid from a box of tea bags (cut into two pieces), a bit of kitchen foil, plus a flap from a small cardboard box.
My first attempt at pricking a hole in the foil went badly and I ended up with one much too large (as seen above). Having finally found a pack of sewing needles and replacing the bit of foil, I got to see a view like this.
Given the rather ropey quality of my picture of the projected eclipse, is this worthy of being an "orb" sighting
