The GeoGuessr community as a geolocation tool

GeoGuessr is a fun and popular game where you are presented with a Google Streetview or photosphere of a location and have to identify where you are from clues in the environment, the game can range to easy (an obvious landmark or a sign) to almost impossible (a remote rural road in Brazil.)

Yet GeoGuessr fans have developed many tools and techniques to succeed, including catalogues of sign types, lampposts, streetlamps and other road furniture to tell where in the world they are.

The community and the tools and techniques may be useful in some cases where geolocation is needed.

"If you are situated indoors or at a location that isn’t on a road, there is a reasonable chance you are in India." :p

that said, very occasionally a location of a UFO picture/video is misattributed, and then this can be helpful. (Less so if you're trying to figure out where that Navy jet was when all you see is clouds.)

I played this for a bit during lockdown and yes, I've seen more Indian university campuses than I ever thought I would. Those and that blasted Bangladesh fish museum. o_O

however, this kind of advice won't be useful when trying to geolocate UFO sightings :)

you have to pick what applies

They make for rather unlikely ET landing places, yeah.
In all seriousness though the game can be quite useful if you want to practise or sharpen your geolocation skills. It'll teach what small things to look out for, that seemingly innocuous signs might eventually lead to the correct spot and so on. With time you'll also learn the lay of the land of various places around the world, which I thought was pretty neat in and of itself.

Some GeoGuessrs can find where the video is taken in which part of a country just by the trees/vegetation (or lack of it),sun, road signs, houses and other small details. Its pretty amazing stuff.
