Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

Hi
I have been lurking around here for a short while and found the site interesting.
I am the kind of nerd who knows a little bit about all the things, though I tend to keep my interests for significantly longer than the average nerd of this type. My current interests are primarily linguistics and amateur radio.

Hello everyone. I have a loved one who is so depressed about the state of the world that she is continually angry. I find this site helpful to get a good perspective on the issues without the emotional baggage. I certainly understand how easy one piece of data can be misinterpreted and become a hitch pin. Unfortunately, we all have presuppositions that color our glasses, but I am here to openly learn and apply techniques to help discern the truth.

Landed here due to elevated CO levels in California inspiring people to suggest a tectonic leak forbearing the earthquake to end life as we know it... Fortunately it was just a "glitch." Thanks

Hello There

I'm 26, Working in IT and living in Swizerland.
Some discussions with chemtrail activists convinced me, to get more "ammo" against their beliefs, thats how I ended up here.
Now, I quess, I cannot contribute too much to the discussions, but I'm willing to do experiments if needed.
Cheers!

Welcome! I was just in Switzerland at the weekend. Lots of contrails over the Alps. Are chemtrail believers a big thing there?

Well, there are more than a few grafittis "warning" about chemtrails, and I got to talk with a bunch of people.

There are a few websites of swiss origin but I guess most of the CT is coming from germany.

Greetings! I found this group while checking out (yet another) 'sky is falling' internet story, this time about the high concentration of CO and other gasses that purportedly signal an impending catastrophic earthquake on the West Coast. I am relieved to find reason and critical thinking on the internet. The name Edward R. Murrow just popped into my head, so I'm going to quote what he said about television in 1958. Substitute 'the internet' for 'television' and his point is still valid.
"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise, it's nothing but wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful."

Hello, my name is Delilah. I'm a trans woman from the American state of Pennsylvania. Even as trans people face a number of problems, even in America, one of the things that gets to me is how many people prove themselves to be examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect; whether it's transphobic individuals trying to convince the public at large that there is merit to "conversion therapy", "doctors" with Clayton degrees trying to sell "vitamin B17" or other "cures" to cancer patients, or some "purveyor of truth" telling us that the government is out to get us.

I first came across this site after a mention from the Australian ABC's Media Watch in relation to bunk regarding Malaysia Airlines flight 370. I'm happy to see that reason has a place in this little corner of the internet and that few, if any, pieces of bunk are safe. Beyond here is where I think the purveyors of bunk prove Charles Darwin right when he said in his book "The Descent of Man" that "...ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge...". Before I descend into trying to write a dissertation, I'll end this post here by saying that it is a pleasure to meet you all and I hope that my contributions prove useful where made.

Hiya!
I'm here because someone dumped 500+ pamphlets about how the government is polluting our environment on purpose with chemtrails on my college campus which then blew all over campus and became pollution themselves. Picking up one, I looked and out of a fit of boredom I went on the website it cited as proof. Natural News sounded levelheaded enough on paper but the actual site was like a car accident, so terrible I couldn't look away.
One thing led to another and I found myself looking at CT sites in my off time, sort of disturbed and morbidly curious. I couldn't believe how many people believed this stuff. I found one forum filled with impotent rage about some British guy who the gubment paid to politely refute conspiracy theories online, Googled around (Pro Skater was the first game I could beat my older brother at, and I still rub that in regularly. Thanks!) and found this site.
I've been a lurker for... A while. An embarrassingly long while, we'll just say.
I'll probably be more of a hangnail than an actual useful debunker, but I'm hoping I'll be some use someday. You're all the best.

Welcome mate,

I was the same lurked for nearly a year til I found a thread I felt I could add to, and the confidence to reply, now they can't shut me up... ;)

Good morning. I too just became a member as well. I'm here because I have become concerned with misinformation and the sites that publish it. Generally I will just lurk on conspiracy forums; however, observations of the posts to these sites can be unsettling. I have noticed that there are certain sites that seem to misconstrue scientific information for the reason of generating income. This site has been useful to me in the past and I'm glad there are folks here posting credible information. Hopefully in the future I will be able to help in the debunking effort.

Hi my real name is Mike. I have some interest in politics and recently ran for City Council. I found this site when I was arguing against the idea that local police forces are being replaced by a UN force. Pointed out that local governments are in the business of keeping power not handing it over. That goes double for the police.

Hello all! Glad I found this site. I am impressed by the supported, thoughtful posts that point out differences without being rude and attacking those with differing opinions. Quite refreshing.

Hi, I have lurked for a couple of years, enjoying the factual roots for the discussion here, and have finally decided to join to debunk the Triton Artificial Gills crowdfunding proposal.

I became interested in the things people will believe and espouse in the absence, or even in the face of, the evidence while working as an analyst for a large organisation, and watching my attempts to present impartial facts twisted, misrepresented or denied based on corporate political expediency. I have been particularly interested in homeopathy, moon landing denial, religious belief and free energy claims, and I also admit to a morbid fascination with the psychology of people making such claims.

Good to be here, hope to contribute further!

I believe I am posting wrong! Haha sorry, can someone please help me with how to correctly post. The only option I can find is the reply button. This is the first forum I have ever joined, please excuse my inexperience.

You're fine. Replying to the OP (opening post) in the Welcome thread is very fine.

In a typical thread: if you are not replying to someone specific (something they said), then when you get to the bottom of the page there is a space for you to post. We do encourage people to read the threads so thoughts and information isnt repeated.

:)
Hi. Welcome!

can someone please help me with how to correctly post.
As a reminder not just for you but to everyone: it vastly helps with readability if you edit and reduce any quote from the post you are replying to, just like I did with your's.

You can edit the text between the [QUOTE] tags like any other text; however, there is a neat trick:
In the post that you want to reply to, select the relevant bit of text with the mouse - and voilá: a "reply" button appears right below the selected text!

If you use this button, the quote in your reply is already edited.

Hi all

I have been reading Metabunk for awhile now and have decided to take part in the conversations from time to time. A few of the veterans of this site will have heard of me as I used to be one of the Chemtrail conspiracy theorists but after meeting with a few airline pilots and making a very good friend who is an ex commercial airline pilot the penny proverbially dropped and I learnt so much more about aviation and condensation trails that I felt rather stupid in my initial beliefs. Some of you may know me as one of the 'Three' where I worked closely with Harry Rhodes & Terry Lawton. I have the utmost respect for those guys, they are lovely people and very caring and I wont say anything bad about them as they are very good friends of mine. they do what they do and I do what I do (which these days I remain off the radar and prefer to observe as opposed to talking about things I either have no idea about or have no solid evidence to back up my claims.)

Anyway, enough of who I am (I believe there are still a few interviews online with me in. I use them as a reminder as to where I was and where I was going wrong.)

I look forward to educated debate

M

Welcome Martin, great to have you here. And it's very interesting to hear about your change in beliefs about chemtrails. If you have the time and interest at any point, there's an "Out of the Rabbit Hole" sub-forum here, where people describe their experiences with similar shifts in beliefs. It would be great if you could start a thread there about the process you went through.

I think you touch on a key point there. I've met Dane Wigington, Michael J. Murphy, and other chemtrail activists, and they largely come across as being genuinely lovely people and very caring. I think that's partly why they are so effective in convincing people. If you don't really follow the science and the facts about weather and aviation then it becomes all about trust. And it's far easier to trust your good friends than some authority.

Hello Martin. It's interesting to hear that you remain good friends with people in the "chemtrail movement" despite having moved on from that yourself. In many cases it seems as though people who don't believe get cut off (in the same way that many people who go "down the rabbit hole" cut off their former friends and even family).

I have to admit that I hardly hear from those in certain movements since I put an abrupt halt to my youtube channel and old facebook page due to personal reasons.

I shall post where Mick recommended my story at some point.

Hello!

I stumbled upon this site when I saw a link to the "Psychology of Contrail Believers" thread posted on FB. It piqued my interest as a couple of days ago I got embroiled in an ongoing debate with a Facebook friend who is a true believer. He kept posting "evidence" that really wasn't. Lots of YouTube videos, and links to articles that discuss the possibility of weather control in very hypothetical ways, but that he takes as hard proof that these things are being done.

It's weirdly fascinating to see otherwise very rational, intelligent people buying into this sort of conspiracy theory when there is so much evidence to the contrary.

Hi,
New lurker here. Great group of people with interesting ways of dealing with silly ideas. Will post more when I have something original to add.

Hello Everyone,
I am Pablo and I have joined this site because when I read or heard about something that is either new or weird for me, I would like to see the both sides of the coin. Debate always enriches knowledge.

Hi! I've lurked for awhile, but I have literally no idea how I got here. (Probably from looking up something about orgonite, though, because the idea of "gifting" it makes me irrationally annoyed for some reason.)

Anyway. I used to work for an environmental lab doing soil and water tests. Now I have an idiopathic chronic illness, and sometimes people try to use it to convince me that chemtrails are A Thing. I'd write more about myself, but I'm extremely terrible at posts like this.

Hello! Interested in the psychology of the believer. Have a friend who other than flat earth theory (that I'm aware of at least) pretty much subscribes to any other theory out there and probaby spends a little too much time on them. Uses a lot of misappropriated gematria, and is also heavy into Chem trails and geo engineering. Their topic of conversation both virtually and in person are about a theory so it's set me off on a massive research project so I can debate without doing them a disservice by not falling into the rolling eyes syndrome or passive aggressive put downs. . Uses all the tricks in the book - straw man, shotgun etc. Guess I'm also trying to better my debating skills and I love learning about stuff.

That is exactly the same thing as what brought me here, welcome.

Hello. Started watching YouTube flat earth stuff for a laugh, started to get angry but realized that learning the best ways to debunk that stuff is fun too.

Fellow newbie here, and I came here for roughly the same reason. Saw a bunch of pamphlets, looked at geoengineering websites on a whim and became obsessed.
Welcome! :)

Hello!
Very happy I found this site! I'm not a conspiracy nut, I just want to know the truth. I've seen a lot of the conspiracy stories/videos, etc., and I am happy metabunk is around to show the other side. A lot of great information on this site. Look forward to learning a lot!

Hello, I am pretty much paranoid about everything ever. I have my little cycle of paranoia which keeps happening but always I do manage to get the right info about the subject I'm unnecessarily paranoid over and debunk it/refute it being able to not be paranoid over it for some time and sometimes if I'm lucky, I will not worry about it at all (I probably should see a therapist or something). I joined this website because sometimes there isn't enough information on a subject that's bothering me so I cannot come to a fool conclusion. That's when I need help from other more rational, more professional and significantly less paranoid people. Just a note, although I may me paranoid of something, it doesn't mean I believe it; it just means that I don't have enough power (at the time) to see through the bunk or there's not enough information for me to see through the bunk and also I'm being very irrational. So yeah, I hope you can help if you can and I hope I'm not going too be annoying. Have a great day all!
