Welcome Thread - New Members Post Here

"confirmation bias"

what is interesting is that everyone falls victim to this - it is how you deal with it that is important

just recently in another forum I post on, someone posted a link to a photo that showed a female Journalist (she was involved a in a current UK news story)

underneath the link the poster said, "doesn't she look like the actress that starred in that comedy with Hugh Grant"

ah "four weddings and funeral" I thought as I clicked the link - and sure enough (to my mind) she looked like Andie MacDowell

I posted as such and the poster agreed too (lol)

further on in the thread someone pointed out that the film the poster was actually thinking about was probably Bridget Jones and the journalist looked like Renee Zellweger - which indeed on a revisit she did

I had fallen victim to "confirmation bias" and admitted as much, I had Andie Macdowell in my head when I clicked on the original link and that is the likeness my brain registered

when in fact the journalist did look much more like Renee Zellweger

a simple and trivial example but nevertheless, as David Shermer points out, the trick is to

"keep an open mind, but not so open your brains fall out"

Thank you for this forum and way how you are communicating here. I am new member, joining today because of an article (Serbian language) ,which was about dr.Korotkov, pictures of soul leaving human body.I like new discoveries but usually I am little sceptic. Searching more about this topic I noticed your topic about it. On the beginning I was also thinking that you just try to debunk it without evidence but..wow, I am so thankful to Mick West, for showing pictures and giving evidences about their origin. Even about credentials of Dr. Korotkov, someone wrote. I still appreciate his work and research, but the way how it was presented in media, using pictures which he didn't make, was not good even for him. You discussed and exposed just this false presentation.. and I was amazed how you found it.Thank You!:)

Hello to everybody. I found you just recently -today, searching for truth (in Google) about one article and noticed your comments. I am very thankful that I found you. I wrote about it somewhere else here, but now I see that there is place for newcommers.Of course one should say first: Hello,I am..hmm..OK, my name is Zora, means the dawn, in Serbo-Croatian language, but who I really am, I don't know... (I like Osho:)).

Hello, I have come here in the past to read occasionally, and I like it here. I have followed CT and CT DeBunking for a very long time and wanted to post in a thread.

Hello, Ben here, French eastern Canadian. Been trolling this forum for awhile but never posted ... Love the fact that anyone can post as long as they are respectable to one another and open to discussions, unlike many CT sites where the opposite is true (I know, I've experienced it myself).

I have many friends who believe in all kinds of stuff and a few hardcore who aren't really friends anymore. Whenever we discuss anything I don't know, I love coming here to see if it was covered already in a thread. Wish some of the info could help convince my hardcore ex-friends come to reason.

Anyhoo, keep up the great work, this place is so useful and informative and OPEN to discussion, something lacking in our society more and more ...

Ok, starting to rant, I'll stop now LMAO

Hi there....came across Metabunk while googling chem trails. Haven't been here in some time, but plan to spend more time reading here.

Hi all,

Someone linked me to this forum today from a discussion about geoengineering elsewhere. I'm a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California, with a joint appointment in philosophy and earth sciences. I got my PhD in philosophy from Columbia University, and I work on the philosophy of science, the foundations of complex systems theory, and the philosophy of climate science. For the last two years, I've been focusing on geoengineering modeling and policy; I spoke at the UN conference in Paris this summer (where I got jumped by not one but two documentary crews making insane films about chemtrails, including Michael J. Murphy's group), and participated in the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project workshop at NCAR (as the only philosopher, unfortunately).

This looks like a really great resource that you guys have put together. Thanks for fighting the good fight, and I'll be around!

Welcome and I guess I'm not the only whose thinking you will be a valuable addition to our community

Hi, Thought I would say hello, I have perusing this site for a few years as a unregistered user, but seeing that Mick West went to Stonehenge, I wanted to ask him what his impression of the area was.
It's been interesting following discussions on chem trails and 9/11, ect. Great distraction while practicing scales, and I find myself siting with my Guitar engrossed in the debate, not practicing.

Happy Halloween All ~S~

My name in no way means I am falling down the rabbit hole. I've been fighting the right fight for many years on the CT forms.

I discovered your site six months ago from a post at another site. I'm amazed with the good work you guys do and decided to join.

I will probably be mostly silent at first until I understand the rules a little better so as not to cause any misunderstandings.

Thank you Mick for the sanity this site contributes to the Internet.

This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once it has been approved.

A few words on who you are and how you ended up here would be appreciated. Or just say hi!

The amount of censoring you do on this site is very revealing, you shills make me sick..

As a new poster, your first posts need to be approved before they appear.
Spamming a link over and over, as you were doing, is against posting guidelines. Quote the excerpts that you believe are evidence, don't just post a link to an article about cloudseeding as if that proves anything on the chemtrail conspiracy correct.
You are welcome to discuss the article in the appropriate thread.

Nobody here is a "shill". As you have found out, anybody can register and post.

But if you want to discuss the Bloomberg article on cloud seeding, don't just spam the link without adding any comments of your own. Discuss why you think it is important. (There is already lots of discussion of cloud seeding on this site, by the way.)

Welcome Bandarond. If you stick around a bit longer I think you'll find that Metabunk has very little "censoring", so long as you stick within the rules. Look around, you'll find plenty of posts from, for example, chemtrail believers (since that appears to be your chosen "cause").

Unlike *insert favourite chemtrail advocate site/FB page here*, you'll also find that MB as a rule addresses the validity of evidence presented, rather than just crying "shill" and deleting it.

In fact, I'd suggest as a simple experiment you go to one of those sites and post a question or some information that contradicts the current chemtrail groupthink and see how long you last. Then bob back here and tell us all about censorship.

Cheers,

Ray Von

I'm an indulgee in all thing shade tree and diy. I found a rather interesting article a friend and was impress by some of the arguments made against him. The creativity was superb. I'm a seeker of truth on all things science and philosophy. I will not attempt to defend anyone debunked on this site, however when I see a misunderstanding I will correct it. I hope that's not against the debunk only policy. I think if any one has a shred of truth about what they are saying it should be perused. I do draw the line at slander though. I'm writing an article on this friend and you thread on him gave me an excellent alternative viewpoint on him. It was an enjoyable thread if you don't take anything personally. I enjoy people who are willing to speak their minds about things. Small minds talk about people, average minds talk of events, and superior minds talk of ideas. From what I've read so far your contributors run the gamit and I would be honored to be among them. Hello.

however when I see a misunderstanding I will correct it. I hope that's not against the debunk only policy
if you see a misunderstanding or something posted -which is false- and you correct it, then technically you are debunking it. so why would it be against policy? :) and there isnt a 'debunk only policy'..metabunk is about examining specific claims of EVIDENCE and determining if the evidence supports the claim. Sometimes the claim and evidence are correct.

welcome to Metabunk.

Hi, everyone! I'm mostly a lurker, so don't expect a lot of posts, but I really admire this site.. mainly because it emphasizes reasoned responses and politeness rather than a knee-jerk "you're an idiot" response.. if I ever ask a question that seems uninformed and naiive, it's only because I'm probably uninformed and naiive... but I'll NEVER react negatively to being educated..

Hi All, Cheers Mick,

I have enjoyed the sire as a lurker for quite some time and appreciate the no bs knowledge base here. Hope I can contribute a small fraction of what I've learned here.

Looking for people with minds open enough to let in information that will move them along the path to greater self-awareness, which is the only meaningful awareness worth having.

Hi all. I found this website after falling into a research rabbit hole on conspiracy theories surrounding several tragic events, including the recent Paris attacks. I can't believe how many people push these ideas on others on social media/news websites/comment areas/etc. It literally makes me sick to my stomach. These forums seem like a nice place to relax from the crazy (well...first impressions, anyway.) I'd also like to take advantage of the many topics discussed here to work on my critical thinking skills, which I know can be lacking in certain subject areas. Please feel free to help me improve upon my abilities, but please do be nice about it, thanks. :) Nice to meetcha.

It was closed and moved into the Rambles forum, which is members only.

Unfortunately it had strayed too far from the posting guidelines. People are free to copy info out of it into new threads. However the Paris attacks are such a significant event that there's plenty of debunking going on outside Metabunk, so less seems needed here, so far.

I recently posted on the thread."Debunked 9/11 AE911's "Pyroclastic Flow" Collapse Dustclouds" thread by simply stumbling on to it. I hope you will post it. I am actually afraid you won't because I make it too obvious that buildings can't fall that way by gravity. I do make reference to some videos that back up what anyone can see for themselves.

Hi everyone,
My name is Veronica, and I've been reading through the forum for about a week. I was reading Sandy Hook conspiracies for a while, but I got a bit angry and settled in to the paranormal board. I really admire Mick and all the other folks who do what they do on here. You're heroes in my eyes.
I got in to the skeptical community after I was obsessed with all things paranormal. When I was sixteen I regularly watched Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters, Fact or Faked (ha!) and all the other Discovery Channel bunk out there. That all changed, however, when the Ghost Adventures crew did a segment in my town, Nevada City. It's episode 6.04. I was very excited to see what they found, since I live in town and often walked to the "haunted" hotel that they featured, the National Hotel. It was a very boring episode, with no "evidence" found, and furthermore they went in the back of the hotel to a room where a a man had fairly recently killed himself. They didn't find any paranormal activity (heh) in there, and I remember them saying that it was because it was too recent... What really bothered me about the whole ordeal as that the man was local, someone who lived here. It wasn't some legend from the 1800's, it was a man who lived in our community, had family living here, and whose sad story has now been seen by millions. I started doubting the whole paranormal ideology then and began looking for explanations for paranormal videos on YouTube. That led me to an amazing YouTuber known as CaptainDisillusion, which led me to James Randi, and the rest is history.
I'm looking forward to potentially helping out on here, and hope to become a part of the MetaBunk community!

Hi. New guy from France, here.
This forum has been quite helpful to me in the past, so I thought I'd join.

Love the effort you guys put into debunking even the most pernicious claims. I also admire your patience even with the CTs who are actively mocking and insulting you. Personally, I'm much more brutally honest (and sometimes a bit more rude, too). My policy is pretty much : "If you don't give evidence, I don't give a damn. No, comparing me to a nazi doesn't help. Never did".

Hi all, I've been lurking here a long time and appreciate all the research and discussions. Great resource, keep it up!

Thanks for mentioning Captain Disillusion. Never heard of him before. I just checked out his floating Chinese city video - very interesting and entertaining.

Hello guys, I've been browsing the resources here for some time now and decided to register since this seems to be a great place to have a conversation and learn some more on the subjects that I don't have too much knowledge. That's by the way exactly how I found this site - by loking for some information that would help me discuss chemtrails when a friend of mine sent me the photos he took. I really thought that chemtrails are more or less an american thing and people here in Poland are not that into it. I guess I was wrong so I need to read up on this subject more.

I am so glad to have came across this site quite a while ago when I was deeply into CT, listening to and watching Alex Jones, Mark Dice, watching their videos, and other videos from people who claim everything is a CT. This site actually brought me out of the, what I call, the Cult of Conspiracy in regards to all the Sandy Hook Information. Sadly, I was one of those who did believe this was all a hoax and watched all those videos that "proved" my own point and so, I continued believing them....until I came across here and as well as the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting Reports website and honestly, I wished I never listened to some of those 911 calls that are on there or read some of the info - way too sad and brought a ton of tears to my eyes

Ive heard the same common things that are said about those who do debunk - baaaaaa - they are sheep, $$$$ - they are paid shills by the CIA/FBI, and the whole other slew of other nonsense people do say. But, I began to see just how crazy my life was becoming with researching, for hours at a time, issues and things that could be easily explained - had I looked at the bigger picture and all the info that was out there and not just what I was being fed from Infowars and others.

To make a long story short, Ive been out of the Cult of Conspiracy clan for a few years now and boy, wow, it sure feels good to just live life and not have to be in fear over every little thing and "watch" over my shoulder because you never know you may be behind that bush waiting to take you to the "FEMA" camps so you can be "MK Ultra'd" - ugh - that was me, but thanks to God and to this site, I am free.

Thanks Mick for all you do on here and for everyone else that has debunked this or that, a big thank you to you all as well. Now, where is all this money were all are supposed to have since we all are on the CIA/FBI payroll? I think I spent mine on videogames #sarcasm

Welcome Eric :)

Hahahaha. It sure is, Rev, it sure is. To the max. LOL

Even after leaving all of it behind, I did find myself some what slipping back in, but when the news info hit, in regards to Dylan Roof and Suboxone that was allegedly found, wow - that did it for me right there. I typed up this HUGE response over on Paul Joseph Watson's YT Channel and even over on the Infowars forum in regards to what Suboxone really is and what it is used for and those people still wouldnt believe even with the facts of what it is right in front of them and its like, I have been on Suboxone for 3 years, if not more, so I have a good idea of what it is and what its used for and also sent them to the official Suboxone site/forums - ugh. Still did not change anyone's mind. I think those in the conspiracy world focus on those people who may have low self esteem, maybe even depression issues, or even bi-polar - such as myself - and then they make you feel like you belong to something bigger than yourself and at first, its a great feeling, but once you begin to search out on your own, you are a shill and nothing you can say or show them suffices (referring to my own experience on how I got into CT and how it made me feel)
