New Mexico State Police identify remains as missing Taos woman, Melissa Casias
Taos, NM–The New Mexico State Police is providing an update in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Melissa Casias.
On May 28, 2026, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was notified that a hiker had discovered human remains in the McGaffey Ridge area of the Carson National Forest. Investigators also learned that a handgun was located alongside the remains.
Through coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), the individual has been positively identified as missing person, Melissa Casias.
The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The remains will undergo further anthropological examination by OMI.
On June 26, 2025, Melissa Casias was reported missing after she failed to arrive at work and did not return home that evening after visiting her daughter at work. I'll just note that it took eleven months to find her remains, and I have no reason to think that the state police were in any way remiss in their search. That should be taken into consideration for anyone who calls it "suspicious" that McCasland has not yet been found.

The vastness and the difficult terrain of mountainous territory cannot be overstated, although people from more settled areas sometimes cannot appreciate the problems. After all, there were remains of Custer's Grey Horse Troop that were not found until the 1980s. That was more than a century after the battle of the Little Big Horn, when the battleground had already been searched and studied extensively.

Indeed. I'll just throw this one out there as well. I remember hearing about it on a pod cast a while back:

MALIBU — Human remains found at the bottom of a canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains are probably those of missing Thousand Oaks computer entrepreneur Philip "Taylor" Kramer, the former bassist for the rock group Iron Butterfly who disappeared more than four years ago, authorities said Sunday.

The discovery was made Saturday afternoon by two hikers traveling in a canyon about 1 1/2 miles east of Pacific Coast Highway off Decker Canyon Road, sheriff's deputies said.

The remains were found about 450 feet below Decker Canyon Road inside a 1993 green Ford Aerostar van owned by Kramer. Decker Canyon Road is a mountainous pass of switchbacks that runs between Malibu and Westlake Village.

The disappearance of then-42-year-old Kramer on Feb. 12, 1995, was a mystery from the start because there were no physical clues, only the absence of a 6-foot-5 computer executive who had been stressed out over money.

Kramer then called 911 from somewhere on the Ventura Freeway in the San Fernando Valley and told a 911 operator, "This is Philip Taylor Kramer and I am going to kill myself."

They knew he had made a 911 call, they knew what he was driving, he had been on 101 and was returning from LAX. Despite being sandwiched between LA, Ventura/Santa Barbra and Malibu being a destination for wealthy stars, this guy in a van remained missing for 4 years in a remote island of canyons around 30 miles from downtown LA and in the middle of ~18 million people.
