Time Lapse Videos of the Sky (that you took yourself)

Time lapse taken yesterday from a 747 approaching Darwin. This time of year Darwin is a mecca for thunderstorm watchers.

You can clearly see the formation of a thunderstorm in front of us growing till it hits the tropopause, which was between 50000 and 55000 feet, and then start to spread out.

We were at 34000 feet so the top of this was 20000 feet above us when we passed by. The video encompasses about 15-20 minutes in real time.

Great footage. I was quite surprised how close you got to the edge of the cloud. Is there any noticeable turbulence when you get that close, or is it OK as long as you stay out of the cloud itself?

The rule of thumb is to keep it downwind from the aircraft and stay out of the cloud. There wasn't any turbulence passing this one and the video makes it look closer than we were. We always treat these thunderstorms with respect.
