Additional quote from an official in response to the above reporting, provided by Fox News:
In addition to this tense relationship between Pentagon and FAA around this laser system, the NYT article also raises the fact that the Pentagon and FAA also have a tense relationship in DC due to the military regularly flying dangerous (and no-ADSB) flights around DCA very close to civilian air traffic, creating many close calls, and which led to a mass fatality event in 2025 when a military helicopter visually misjudged its position relative to an approaching commercial airliner and crashed into it, killing everyone on both aircraft.
None of the reporting says any illegally-operated drones, or drones at all, were confirmed to have been there. And Chairez specifically used the phrase "reported sightings".
Absent any further details it closely resembles many other cases where someone alleges they visually saw large numbers of drones fly illegally through restricted and heavily monitored airspace, but for which no tangible evidence can be provided.

Multiple drones were spotted over Fort Lesley J. McNair on a single night in the last 10 days, the official said, prompting increased security measures and a meeting at the White House to discuss how to respond.

Article published March 31, 2026 by NY Times cites multiple anonymous sources saying the admin is considering deploying laser-based anti-drone countermeasures to DC in response. This is apparently the same counter-drone laser system which recently caused controversy when the DHS used it (misidentifying and shooting down party balloons) near El Paso without coordinating with the FAA, leading the FAA to abruptly close vast areas of airspace in order to pressure them to stop. Other misidentification and inter-agency communication failures also led to the Pentagon using it to shoot down a drone which belonged to DHS. "We are working with our law enforcement and interagency partners to monitor and investigate the reported sightings.
"Our top priority is the safety of our service members and civilian personnel that work and live on the base," she added. "Currently, there is no credible threat to Fort McNair, but we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust force protection measures as needed."

But placing the lasers near Fort McNair would add a layer of complexity to the heavily traveled airspace over Washington. The laser system has been the subject of a heated dispute between the Federal Aviation Administration, which has raised safety concerns about its use along the border with Mexico, and the Pentagon, which has been more eager to deploy it to fight drone incursions by Mexican drug cartels.
The F.A.A. is already under intense scrutiny after a midair collision between an Army helicopter and a regional passenger jet killed 67 people over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan National Airport last year.
