Sen. Mitch McConnell released a statement on his health on Sunday along with a photo of himself and his wife, Elaine Chao, after questions swirled about his condition. McConnell said he was "briefly unconscious" after he took a fall last month and he had been dealing with a "mild case of pneumonia."

Is this an authentic photo or AI generated? To my eye, there's no reason to think this is AI generated. I've already seen speculation on a YT video that it is. The newspaper was the thing that generated the most suspicion. I won't link to that YT video right now because I think the author was just echoing things he'd already seen on the Internet/Social Media. In our cultural/political climate it seems likely that this idea will be bandied about.

I know very little about how to digitally analyze images for signs that it's AI generated. But there's no obvious signs, such as six fingers or other AI weirdness.

My impression of this photo, as an old fashioned film guy/advanced film era amateur photographer:
-Taken at a short distance with a short focal length lens (wide angle lens)
-No obvious signs of barrel distortion to my eye; but I understand that digital cameras can and do correct for barrel distortion.
-There is some noticeable distortion of the faces, but this is entirely consistent with perspective distortion due to the small distance between the camera and the subjects. Just a reminder that perspective distortion is caused by distance only, not the lens.
-The lighting is consistent. There are two sources:
1. The warmer light is artificial room light.
2. The colder (blue) light is coming from a window. It's indirect Sunlight. Elaine Chao's face is not as brightly lit, but this is not from fall off. (Not to confused with drop off. Fall off is what photographers call the effect caused by the inverse-square law). Her face/hair is not as brightly lit by the Sunlight because the Sunlight has been cut off by the upper sill of the window/a window shade/whatever. Her neck has some hints of Sunlight illumination, but above that, it's primarily lit by warmer artificial light in the room (diffused). With highlights in her hair caused by the direct light from the artificial light source behind and above. The right side of her face shows some reflected Sunlight. The right side of McConnell's face is lit by Sunlight and the left by warmer artificial light (direct). Looks consistent.

To my eye the shadows are entirely natural looking.

Bottom line: It looks like a real photo. My first guess would be a smartphone camera. If it is an AI generated image... it's a really good AI generated image.

About the newspaper, (reportedly the sports section of the Washington Post):
The newspaper looks distorted. Which might arouse suspicion that this is due to AI weirdness.

But to my eye, this distortion is entirely natural, caused by:
1. The wavy 3-D shape of the paper (primarily)
2. Perhaps a bit of perspective distortion, as some of it is closer to the camera.

The author of the YT video in question was confused by the other Mitch McConnell photo. The earlier July 7th one; which has been confirmed to be fake.

This one:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/mitch-mcconnell-proof-life-post/

The alleged X post included an image of McConnell holding a copy of The Washington Post.

The alleged screenshot also circulated on Reddit (archived). Snopes readers contacted us about the image, asking whether it was real.

The alleged proof of life from McConnell was fake. The post did not appear on the senator's actual X page. No reputable news sources (archived, archived, archived) reported that McConnell had been released from hospital or had given a public update about his health. Given the high level of public interest in McConnell's health, reputable media would have reported on such an update, if true.

Yes, this also has the front page of the Post sports page.

Seems like someone was making a point by putting the sports page in McConnell's hand in the real photo.

Look at the knuckles on his left hand.
The knuckle of the index finger is blown out - overexposed. Details are gone. The rest are wrinkly with natural looking shadows. Also, you see knuckle bones in a fist, not so much on a hand held in this position.

Also, I can't figure out where the gaze of these persons is directed.
I don't know. But, I suspect they are looking at the face of the photographer, as he was holding a smartphone down lower.

If the photographer were looking through a viewfinder on a real camera... yeah you'd expect the gaze of the subjects to be centered on the camera.

Looks like it's a chair, not a bed, btw. And not in a hospital. Shame on me...

McConnell statement
I've been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I'll keep regaining my strength.

The text is blurry and the tag on his shirt is blurred.
Poor resolution is to blame.

I took this off the Internet. The text is all blurry. It's not out of focus and it's not AI generated. It's a low resolution image. Same problem with the McConnell photo. Low resolution.

Also, if he's in the hospital, why is there no IV connected to him to monitor his health?
He's not in a hospital. (But I made that mistake myself.) IVs don't monitor anything. No monitor because he doesn't need one at this point.

Random comments I'm seeing here and there:

Where's the bottom of his glasses?
They are half frame. No frame on the bottom, just glass. Poor resolution.

This one is really common...
Fact-checkers (Snopes, Cincinnati Enquirer) confirm visual glitches like blurry newspaper text, warped details, and OpenAI's SynthID watermark. McConnell's office released a real recovery statement after his June fall/pneumonia, but this photo isn't authentic.
Wrong image. That's the July 7th one.

...he's in blue jeans. I've visited a lot of people in hospitals, the only time I see people in jeans is when they are walking in or out.
Not in a hospital

The adidas three stripe logo is clearly visible on the front of the player's jersey. Big red flag. Nike is the sole sponsor for all MLB teams including their uniforms, not adidas.
Not a MLB uniform. The guy on the front cover of the July 12 Washington Post sports section is Texas A&M second baseman Chris Hacopian. Go Aggies.

Elaine Chao's got no hand...
Her right hand is behind his left arm.

Lot's of permutations on this one. Usually, it's identified as McConnell in recovery from a fall in March 2023.

This one gets it less wrong. Correctly identifies it as taken during an interview.

There's a series of photos taken during a Bloomberg interview on May 8 2023.

But what sense does this make? He's wearing a similar or the exact same shirt, but everything else is different. I guess they think someone trained an AI on this old photo and the AI took off the blazer and put in the entire shirt? But gave him different glasses, took off the watch and the ring... Does it work that way?

The simplest explanation is that he still has the same shirt. People do that you know. Keep shirts for a few years. I have shirts from 30 years ago.

Lot's of comments showing this as proof of AI weirdness.

I can't explain this one, as I don't know all that much about digital photography... But this weirdness (the white zone around the finger), I tentatively suspect, is an edge-enhancement artifact. Anyone who knows better, please correct me.

The distorted black ink line on the paper, though, is entirely natural. The paper is mashed down into a 3-D shape.
