Is this an authentic photo or AI generated? To my eye, there's no reason to think this is AI generated. I've already seen speculation on a YT video that it is. The newspaper was the thing that generated the most suspicion. I won't link to that YT video right now because I think the author was just echoing things he'd already seen on the Internet/Social Media. In our cultural/political climate it seems likely that this idea will be bandied about.
I know very little about how to digitally analyze images for signs that it's AI generated. But there's no obvious signs, such as six fingers or other AI weirdness.
My impression of this photo, as an old fashioned film guy/advanced film era amateur photographer:
-Taken at a short distance with a short focal length lens (wide angle lens)
-No obvious signs of barrel distortion to my eye; but I understand that digital cameras can and do correct for barrel distortion.
-There is some noticeable distortion of the faces, but this is entirely consistent with perspective distortion due to the small distance between the camera and the subjects. Just a reminder that perspective distortion is caused by distance only, not the lens.
-The lighting is consistent. There are two sources:
1. The warmer light is artificial room light.
2. The colder (blue) light is coming from a window. It's indirect Sunlight. Elaine Chao's face is not as brightly lit, but this is not from fall off. (Not to confused with drop off. Fall off is what photographers call the effect caused by the inverse-square law). Her face/hair is not as brightly lit by the Sunlight because the Sunlight has been cut off by the upper sill of the window/a window shade/whatever. Her neck has some hints of Sunlight illumination, but above that, it's primarily lit by warmer artificial light in the room (diffused). With highlights in her hair caused by the direct light from the artificial light source behind and above. The right side of her face shows some reflected Sunlight. The right side of McConnell's face is lit by Sunlight and the left by warmer artificial light (direct). Looks consistent.
To my eye the shadows are entirely natural looking.
Bottom line: It looks like a real photo. My first guess would be a smartphone camera. If it is an AI generated image... it's a really good AI generated image.
About the newspaper, (reportedly the sports section of the Washington Post):
The newspaper looks distorted. Which might arouse suspicion that this is due to AI weirdness.
But to my eye, this distortion is entirely natural, caused by:
1. The wavy 3-D shape of the paper (primarily)
2. Perhaps a bit of perspective distortion, as some of it is closer to the camera.
