There certainly could be such threads, I've ignored a bunch of threads in that section. I hadn't noticed the "Mark forums read" option before - that does mitigate the issue, thanks!

There was a big CPU spike around the time you reported this.

Rather a lot of traffic from Singapore

I'm not sure why, or if this is causing the issues you see.

There did appear to be either a broken crawler or a DDOS slowing things down. I have mitigated this, and the server load now seems more reasonable.

How does it come the embedded reddit post is translated to Italian? I guess everybody gets a translation in his own language? But how does it work?

Just when using the chrome read aloud mode I can never get it to read a particular post or even all the current page of a thread. image attached of what it'll read right now. Its not a major problem for me etc Nor would I rate it high on the fix list.

Just saying. I only participate on one other thread, about RVs, which recently switched from it's previous clunky host to XenForo, like Mick uses here. While it's an improvement over the previous service, it's still night and day compered to what we enjoy here. This really spoils one when using other forums.

This looks like it's reading the top of the current page, but doesn't scroll?

Do you have the same problem on short (1-page) threads?

that xenfofo link seemed to work the same.
this stand alone works better although I find the voice less appealing

just for the record I'm not visual impaired etc just some days my reading and writing wouldn't be great, I'm not looking for special treatment and I have developed my own work arounds for these things.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot I can do if it's standard XF behavior.

Ok, that's bad luck.
The way forward would be to raise your issue there.
That should give you feedback on whether Xenforo has issues with screenreaders in general, or just that one.
If it's just that one, then the developers of that screenreader need to up their game.

I never go to Reddit tbh... But I just tried and yes, it's translated. So it's Reddit doing the translation and I access Reddit automatically just by looking at the Metabunk thread, through the embedded link? Is this how it works?

Yes. Embedding content also embeds their code. Like when you have an embedded YouTube video.

Is there an option to turn off the translation? It's annoying in case I want to quote the (say)Reddit post. I prefer not to access Reddit, and I cannot copy or screenshot the embedded post because it's in Italian.

That's a Reddit setting, not a Metabunk setting.

I know it varies by computer, but on my Chromebook if I try to screen shot text, like on a PDF that wont allow Copy, if I wait a few seconds, it will give me the option to "copy as text". So, the screen shot actually generates past enabled text. I would think once you have text, it can be translated?

Actually trying it here. I tried to screenshot just the text of an old post by @Mauro that gave me an option to "copy text". So, here is the text :

Let me see if I can give you another example of why it makes a lot of sense to consider the modulo operation over the whole Z, and even on the wholeset of reals, R, and not stay fixed on the 'mod-N' subset.
You can calculate and plot y = x (mod 11) over the reals (imagine the x-axis extends to + and minus infinity):

Then I opened a ChatGPT translator and copied the text and asked for an Italian translation:

The problem here is that reddit notices the language of our browser (sometimes?) and "helpfully" translates posts written in English. So, if we want to copy the original text, we have to go to reddit and turn the (automatic) translation off.

The forum converts the URL for embedding, so none of this does anything. :-(

There's a reddit post that suggests adding English at the top of the languages in your browser setting fixes this.

This double standard has always been glaringly obvious to me - it's demonstrably having a real effect on the discussions we're having, and it's bunk.

I swear I copied the English text into the translation box and thought I asked for Italian? I thought it looked kinda Spanish, which I can pick through. I was really surprised that Italian used the word "entonces", but it was time for dinner and I didn't think much of it.

My bad, I just tried again. I copied the text and searched for "translate English to Italian". First up is Chat GTP and clicking there I now see it DID NOT give me an English to Italian translator as I asked for, but defaulted to English to Spanish. Never trust them AIs!!!

The biggest problem is that that translation is in Spanish

Yes I could back-translate from Italian to English, but it's very improbable I'll recover the same wording as the original, so it'd actually be a paraphrase.

I also don't like much that code will be executed just by looking at a page. But oh well, I'll live with that I guess.

Well, one must first be aware this problem exists. Now that I know it, the first fix coming to my mind would be to disable the embedding of Reddit posts, they could still be quoted using a screenshot + the link. As things stands now I think the embedding violates the 'no-click' policy because even if I don't have to physically click anything Reddit is 'clicked' anyway (and without my consent, which is even worse, I really don't like it).
