In am in South Africa and failed to source a mask from a few pharmacies is tried. Where could I expect to find such a mask? A hardware store? Other than online.

Optimistically, I'm thinking that any US panic will be noticeable, but minimal. Overly worried people may become " Instant Preppers ™ ".

If I get fair-warning that my area will be quarantined, Where else would I go ?
True, some people may escape, but do they have places, friends. or family to go to ?
Will friends or family "let" them stay with them if they just came from a quarantined area ?
Very few people have a summer cabin in the woods, stocked with supplies..

But yes, there is a danger that the virus could spread by untested people selfishly fleeing to new areas with formerly zero infections.

I've been sent links from relatives regarding claims the Novel Coronavirus originated in the USA rather than china such as https://www.globalresearch.ca/covid-19-further-evidence-virus-originated-us/5706078 I'm usually wary of anything coming from globalresearch . Is anyone sufficiently versed in virology to ascertain if these claims hold up to scrutiny?
The gist of the claims is that the genetic diversity of identified different strains and their geographic distribution suggest the virus originated somewhere other than china.

My wife was in San Diego for a conference that ran through Sunday, but now she's coming back tomorrow (as they cancelled the conference after one day)

The Chinese Hospital Authority is saying that Coronavirus patients may have reduced lung function - a drop of 20-30 percent - remaining even after they are discharged. There could be scarring or significant organ damage that occurs, and could turn into long-term health issues for patients who have recovered.

Just to share some going-around here in the Netherlands. President Rutte has shared a message to the people on tv. Our government choses to not fully lock up the country like in Italy/Spain. The choice is made to have a "distributed" way of tackling the issue. This means that the measures taken now (shops closed, etc), will make many more slowly immune and not all get sick at once. This strengthens (by immunity) the group/population to fight the virus, while the weak/old get enough support as the hospitalisation peaks are more "smeared out". Also medication and research can help along the way.

I only have a Dutch version of this, as it has just happened on tv.

Yeah, but it's supposed to work like the CT inserts, pointing everyone to reliable information who watches anything on the topic.

The problem with masks is that it's hard to use them correctly and effectively, and that we don't have enough of them to go around anyway. (Did you know you also need to protect your eyes?) So the proper strategy is to earmark the masks that we do have for medical personnel, where they're most needed, and teach the populace social distancing and proper hygiene, which hopefully works to reduce the overall infection rate to something more manageable (#flattenthecurve), and as a byproduct, hopefully cuts down on transmission of other infections as well, which a) lightens the load on hospitals, b) helps cut down on multi-infections, and c) is a helpful habit even when this crisis is over.

It is totally fair to point fingers at China or WHO for mishandling or misreporting about the virus, and there should be full, third party investigations to figure out exactly how this all started and whether critical information was distorted. But it's important to keep it in the broader perspective that we have a global health crisis happening right now, and WHO guidelines can help us mitigate it from getting worse.

To note: the first picture is actually a page from a 2008 Sylvia Browne book, not Dean R. Koontz as stated. And for the second one, as well as not being in Wuhan but Shanghai, 500 miles away (as already pointed out), "Raccoon City" is only an anagram of "Corona" if you spell it wrong. Plus, in Resident Evil it's actually called "G-Virus", not "C virus".

Googling any of the keywords provides all the necessary details.

To me that sounds like a distortion of that article. That article is about how China is not considering cutting exports, and instead enhancing their capability to meet US demand.

It's like if I said "I'm not going to, but I could dump your dog 3 states away because you let him bark all night."

While Tucker is a piece of work who often exaggerates for emotional effect, it does sound like a sort-of threat to me. (an illogical threat granted, they are complaining we are hurting their economy by banning tourism from all countries to China... so not selling us goods isn't going to help their economy much. )

But pointing out they could cut off our medical supplies isnt very friendly, in my opinion. I'm sure they were just venting though, everyone's tense these days.

I've seen the opposite conspiracy theory mentioned, that the WHO is bowing to the interests of Bill Gates, who profits from that somehow (how??).

People here didn't like that too much. It's a nasty version of "America First", if true as reported.

I have also seen commenters trying to brand the epidemic as "Wuhan Virus" instead of using the name Covid-19, and it's upsetting to me.
 
Has anyone mentioned Tomas Puyo's medium.com article yet? I think it (or reasoning like it) was instrumental in precipitating the measures adopted by Germany on Monday, with other countries to follow suit. It's a long piece with many graphs, trying to teach that a) there's a large number of undetected cases, b) growth is exponential; c) if we do nothing, we'll be overwhelmed; d) the sooner we act, the better the outcome will be.

This is an exponential threat. Every day counts. When you're delaying by a single day a decision, you're not contributing to a few cases maybe. There are probably hundreds or thousands of cases in your community already. Every day that there isn't social distancing, these cases grow exponentially.

Specifically, starting Monday, in Germany, we've been keeping open: grocery stores, farmer's markets, delivery services, pharmacies, drug stores, gas stations, banks and the mail, hairdressers, cleaners, newsagents, home improvement stores and garden stores and pet stores, and general health services. We've been closing pretty much everything else, pubs, culture, libraries, sports, clubs, schools, churches, specialized stores. There are to be no public gatherings of more than 10 people (excepting public transport and workplaces) and no private gatherings of more than 50. This is in force for a full month, until April 18th, and may be extended. There are also rules on how much you're allowed to visit retirement homes.
