This documentary follow the work of UAPx, as they revisit (roughly) the area of the 2004 Nimitz UFO sightings, and try to find something interesting flying in the airspace between Catalina Island, Long Beach, and Laguna Beach.

They use a variety of equipment:

Two things they feature in the trailer are a "wormhole", and a "Navy Tic-Tac". The latter shows up in thermal footage

Before zooming in it reminded me of the Chilean UFO (an A340) - and of course that region is very busy with air traffic, with Catalina being a navigation VOR, so planes fly right towards, or away from it. So maybe it's a plane.

Zooming in (see video above) it seems to exhibit some kind of flapping motion.

The "Wormhole", looks kind of like a flock of birds. But we don't really have any context.

The creator/host, Caroline Cory, has a somewhat new-age mystical background, which does not bode well for scientific accuracy. But we'll see.

Article:
Caroline Cory is an award-winning filmmaker and the visionary author of best-selling books on Consciousness Science and Energy Medicine. As a child and throughout her life, Cory has had numerous UFO encounters as well as E.S.P (extra-sensory) and pre-cognition experiences, which led her to become deeply connected to existential topics, the study of Consciousness and the mechanics of the universe. After teaching Energy Medicine and consciousness work for over a decade, Cory founded Omnium Media, an entertainment and media platform that tackles various thought-provoking topics on the human condition and the nature of reality.

Is this the one that is also supposed to present the evidence as scientific papers as some point?

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but how does she, and the rest of them know what an actual "wormhole" actually looks like, such that they can label whatever it was they saw as a "wormhole-like anomaly"?

A wormhole (or Einstein–Rosen bridge or Einstein–Rosen wormhole) is a speculative structure linking disparate points in spacetime, and is based on a special solution of the Einstein field equations.

Wormholes are consistent with the general theory of relativity, but whether wormholes actually exist remains to be seen.

Maybe it's just me, but it felt like a kicked-up Discovery Channel show. Lots of hype and dramatic music, lots of talking heads, a nutty SciFi related host form the past, Michio Kaku, lots of technobabble and of course lots of "CRAAAAZY" and "INSANE" happenings that are going to prove UAPs are ETs or aliens.

Now it could be that all this UAP stuff is actually spiritual in nature giving, as Mick noted above, Carolyn Cory's background. Here is how she is described on the AncienAliens fan page, which also lists all of her many appearances on AA over the years:

Caroline Cory is a filmmaker, futurist and the visionary author of best-selling books on Consciousness and Energy Medicine, topping the charts of Consciousness Science and mystical literature. As a child and throughout her life, Cory has had numerous otherworldly experiences, which led her to become deeply connected to spirituality, the study of Consciousness and the mechanics of the universe. After teaching Energy Medicine and consciousness work for over a decade, Cory founded Omnium Media, a consciousness-based entertainment and media platform.

In addition to writing and producing, Cory continues to lecture and coach internationally on various mind over matter subjects and appears regularly as a guest expert on supernatural phenomena at major conferences and television shows including History Channel’s popular series Ancient Aliens. Among several recent accomplishments, Cory’s film E.T. CONTACT has won 9 film awards and 2 nominations at various festivals around the globe. Her latest film SUPERHUMAN: THE INVISIBLE MADE VISIBLE studies the psi and mind over matter phenomena.

So all these scientists are participating in a film being made by a regular on AA.

The UAPx team is a mixed bag. Some seem more serious than others. Some more mystical. Here's one already distancing them from the project (preceding tweet to the above)

I think it's kind of making a deal with the devil for some of them - they want publicity, interest, funding. But then they have to perform, and allow entertainment producers to create the final product.

The UAPx team is a mixed bag.
Maybe I missed it in the trailer. What is the UAPx project? Was it a group of people trying to do what is portrayed and then Carolyn Cory got wind of it and offered to make a film about them? Or was she instrumental in setting the whole thing up to make a film about it?

If the former, then we've shown a quick Google search about her revivals a pro spiritual/UFO/psy/paranormal regular from AncientAliens. Something a legit science minded person would, I think, be at least worried about. If the latter, the same applies, only more so as your being recruited by a regular on AA. Also, if the former, one could argue that she came in saying one thing and then hijacked the project, but again who she is, isn't a secret.

UAPx is the group around Kevin Day and Gary Voorhis (not sure if spelled correctly) from the USS Princeton that was involved in the "Tic Tac" event in 2004.

In all that gear on the roof I don't see one telephoto optical lens on a mirrorless/DSLR/video camera. It all looks like thermal cameras to me, they have binoculars of course, but surely you'd want optical/thermal/MWIR on the same LOS for ruling out things. We all know things can look very different under the different wavelengths.

They indeed all look like (larger angle) optics on a thermal cam. No VIS telescopes, it seems. Ok, well you gotto make sure the object observed remains unresolved, right?

They should have included a Smell-O-Scope, perhaps more luck.

So, these guys spent 5 days on some SoCal roof tops with a bunch of cameras, and maybe not the right ones according to jarlrmai, trying to catch what they thought they saw almost 20 years ago? And this pre-supposes that these UAPs, whatever they are, frequent one of the busiest bits of airspace in the country.

Then the whole endeavor will be presented in a film, hosted by an aging T.J. Hooker, that is being produced and directed by a person that often appears as an "expert" on AncientAliens.

I know, as polite skeptics, we're not supposed to dwell on things like this, we should just wait for them to present their evidence and let the evidence speak for itself. Hopefully we can get on it fast and hard once the film is released.

Will anyone be surprised if it turns out Cory, as the filmmaker, has all the rights to whatever images were captured and says how they can and cannot be used?

As for the "Don't judge UAPx based on the film", maybe O.S.I.R.I.S. should have thought about that before signing up with Cory in the first place. Who she is, is no secret.

Just a guess: The film will come out and be promptly debunked. Some of the dissenters from UAPx will cry foul and complain that Cory hijacked their project for her own publicity and spiritual conclusions. The dissenters will also claim that they really did capture actual UAPs with all the kit they dragged up onto the rooftops, but Cory wont let them show it, so will just have to take there word for it. Then some stuff not in the film will get leaked, but will just be the usual low-res fuzzy images and the whole thing will go down hill from there.

The whole thing is a bit ludicrous really.

Lets look a the issues a bit.

Entertainingly the idea of setting up an observatory to try and detect and photograph UFOs, this effort and the proposals of Avi Loeb "Galileo Project" are all very similar to the problem that the US Navy targeting pods that are the source of all this kerfuffle are designed to solve.

1. Acquisition. you need to know that "something" is there.

The US Navy mostly solves this issue by having RADAR, powerful target sweeping radars mounted on multiple platforms (ships/aircraft/ground). These RADARs are not generally available for civilians. I'd actually like to know what if any RADARs civilians are allowed without license?

Not sure how O.S.I.R.I.S. do it but it looks to be a mk1 eyeball possibly with binoculars I assume then they pointed the cameras at it. Or maybe they just ran the cameras pointed at random places and saw what came up.

Never really been sure how Avi Loeb proposes to do it automatically? Some sort of dome camera with 180 degree?

2. Identification, what is it?

For the Navy once they have a RADAR track they can point a camera system on a gimbal at it, this camera system is combination of both MWIR and visual light. MWIR is useful as it generally cuts out haze and shows up relative heat sources (engines, bodies etc) this is adjustable in terms of sensitivity to manage multiple ranges.

O.S.I.R.I.S. seem to have and display footage from thermal cameras, thermal cameras have a different design goal to MWIR, they are generally designed to show absolute temperatures. But there is probably some crossover depending on the the devices used. But likely they don't have the range for far away targets. Happy to be proven wrong on this one, I know the least about these cameras but most of the uses I see for them look to be close range stuff. I really hope they release the models of the cameras used.

So realistically the targets they saw with the thermal cameras would be easy targets for visual id as well (unless they were invisible, which you'd really want visual confirmation of..), so really you'd want to have the same object shown in footage of any objects in optical, MWIR and thermal simultaneously and also from 2 different locations for triangulation.

If I was doing this, thermal would be the lowest on my priority, I'd primarily want optical and MWIR addressing a similar FOV on the same object on a level platform with a known location that also records the time and its orientation to a high degree of accuracy. Ideally auto tracking. Then 2 or more of the platforms identically specced per observation location and then this setup placed at different locations, preferably at 90 degrees to each other.

O.S.I.R.I.S. also seem to have placed all their chickens in the "out to sea" given all their cameras are pointing in one direction. Still it must be nice to get paid to sit on top of a sea view property in Long Beach.

That is my exact point of criticism to Loeb's plans. I guess the observing station should have the ability to make a good resolved sharp image of an UAP, giving rise to magnification, and thus a telescope is the obvious choice. But a telescope has generally a very small field of view, and so a kind of Az/Elevation pointing system is needed too. Does get all pretty pricey.

Mind you, space agencies do have (fast) pointing systems, for optical tracking of space satellites and debris.. Complicated million dollar systems.

Yeah it's all about how you know there is something to point the cameras at in the 1st place, and then how you point them accurately.

So you need a system that's monitoring the airspace some how, that isn't RADAR. Perhaps a fisheye camera that then talks to the gimbal mounted telescopes. But then your detection rate is limited why what that system can resolve.

IF the UAPs are possibly super secret high tech military stuff, that might not be a bad assumption, to look for them around the same military operations areas where they were seen before. And if they are just ordinary aircraft too far away to identify with certainty, busy airspace would still seem to be an excellent choice!

- do they have flightradar24 to identify known aircraft?

- can they even track accurately where these cameras are pointed?

If the cameras were mounted on accurate electric gimbals with tracking, you could use some master optics to acquire a target and slave everything else to it, including the telescopes. Or mount everything in one huge frame.

Optical ranging accuracy depends entirely on your angular resolution and the width of the base line. "At right angles" simply means the baseline is wider than the object distance (and that you know in advance where the object will appear), but it's not required. Looking in approximately the same direction helps ensure that you're not looking at different targets.

lets wait for the film and data, at this point this is all speculation and these shots could be only a part of their equipment

It supposedly has taken a scientific approach with many experts and cutting edge technology used. The documentary doesn't come out until May 3, so we'll have to wait to see what their findings were, but some of those findings are under peer review. Here is a link to the website about the movie: https://www.atearinthesky.com.

I'm looking forward to the open discussion once the movie is out!

they did a follow up panel which clarifies a lot of the stuff seen in the documentary.

they will release their findings next month in the SCU conference, and they will release their data to the public by the end of year, when they will submit their papers for peer-review.

they also have an active discord, where they answer questions:
https://discord.gg/arnAZdqp

in total, they found 4 anomalous UAPs. i was initially unimpressed by their "wormhole", but after watching their panel, it's actually an interesting and quite weird discovery. it could be nothing at the end, but i'm following its development.

I rented the video. I've never heard of Caroline Cory before but would generally describe this as ufo/uap hunters (think ghost hunters) where they show up with over-the-counter gear like night vision camera, radio wave detector, etc. Within a day, they get excited about seeing an object that looks like a star or maybe a drone and describe it as a uap and get Michio Kaku to mention something about "the day we discover alien life will be the greatest day in human history" type of comments. They then explain it briefly to William Shatner for star power. Shatner and Kaku are in it less than five minutes combined out of 90 minutes. There is a lot of interesting footage we are all used to seeing from this site of interesting UAP, half of which are clearly something mundane like reflective helium balloons that I see all the time (and film all the time) in the very same skies. LA skies are very, very busy skies full of balloons, so many planes, drones, helicopters, military, and weird stunts. For example, I've seen a random mushroom cloud ounce. It was from an action film shoot I later realized, but we get red bull skydivers that always gets reported as UAP. I got the impression this is a bit of an ad for UAPx, some of the tiktok Navy people started a small company to do research(?) but wouldn't consider them scientists and don't think anyone but Caroline Cory would. They might be better described as Naval technicians.

Is it worth watching? I'd say only if you take this as entertainment. It is probably convincing to those who eat up ghost hunters level of scientific scrutiny. Absolutely not convincing and not good science, just documenting a five day search for "anomalous" sky events in Southern California, no contrary points of view. The editing is massaged and will only convince those already convinced.

Well ... no. If the "mystery" is ever answered, that will be the day they all have to go out and get a new hobby.

In the end credits, I get the impression Kaku had no idea what the documentary he commented on was about. They include his comment about "if you get abducted steal a pencil or artifact or anything that can be investigated so there is 'some tangible evidence' ".

you're overly optimistic
human experience shows they'd just turn it into scandal sheets
"did Amber Heard have sex with an alien? click here to see what we found in her garbage bin"

Dude, you've been abducted by aliens - keistering just ain't gonna work.

Another junk science film! I can't believe I wasted ten bucks to rent it on Prime!

Nausiating pseudo scientific conclusions throughout. what the heck is a wormhole and how do they know objects are "coming out of it". Looks just like weather to me. The endless dots on the cameras are mostly aircraft, civilian and military. a few are satelites and the rest are just bugs. What a waste of time!

Can we consider this thread an "official UAPx thread"? However, do you think it is remarkable that the group is working to establish itself as a UAP authority at the congress? John Greenewald released material on this last week. In the header he asks ...
Does Congress have to rely on the U.S. military to give them answers about UFOs? One group thinks there are more options on the table, and they believe they could absolutely fill the role with more efficiency and reliability than the military. The question is, will Congress take them up on it?
... and continues:
As the world awaits the second, but now nearly two-week-late, public UFO/UAP report published by the U.S. government, a different development has unfolded this week behind the scenes. For months, a group that specializes in investigating the phenomena, and “providing direct access to the general public of reviewed and analyzed data,” has been preparing a private briefing about UFOs to the Intelligence & Special Operations Sub-committee of the House Armed Services Committee.

That briefing was given this last Wednesday, and the group has offered The Black Vault an exclusive inside look at what all went down.
What do you think? To be honest, I have my difficulties in following the political processes surrounding the UAP/Pentagon issue and assessing them from abroad.

UAPx never released any public data to my knowledge despite the promises, I then understand there was a split in the group. I think they claim they doing it via peer reviewed journals as of now, but still we wait.

I personally believe there are efforts to inject UFO enthusiasts into the government in some form to continue the "Government officials confirm UFOs are real" narrative.

I would love to have names and positions of the people presenting and backing these people, how do they get to this point where they briefing HASC? Who makes the wheels spin for them?

Is the name Rep. Tim Burchett mentioned, how about Christopher Mellon?

i think what is going on here is that there are two tracks that massively interfere and create a lot of chaos:

Official Track:

Establishing a reporting system for unidentified objects to make sure that enemy drones or weapons can be detected and airspace security is increased. They have scientists and experts that can evaluate if reported data is a malfunctioning sensor, misinterpreted phenomena or really a possible threat that needs to be investigated.

Side Track:

"UFO loonies" and people with hidden agendas that leverage the public and gullible or politicians to enforce an alien narrative because their either really believe the government is having secret alien parties at some remote location and is flying around with anti gravity candy or because they like to be relevant and benefit with 5 minutes of fame or money.

With UAPx i believe they easily fall in the side track category and check both marks for "real believers" and "fame or money".

Its the Bigelow story again. He really believes in aliens and weird stuff and has found some deep government pockets that even let him increase his wealth by following his fringe hobbies.

Elizondo on the other hand strikes me as a super gullible believer that is also happily using this topic to get some personal revenge with ex colleagues that ignored him and flipped him off as a looney.

Issue:

The officials tasked with the official track constantly have to deal with requests, foia stuff and demands triggered by the side track efforts and have a hard time to explain this to the senate and or the public, because they cant risk to look as if they dont follow senate orders, dont take their task seriously and also cant tell anything they want due to NDA / security concerns in a public hearing.

This is how it felt to me when i watched the first hearing. These poor officials seemed kinda lost how to deal with this absurd situation of highly ranked politicians believing they have knowledge of aliens flying across their training space

I come to the same conclusion, even if it is perhaps a bit prejudiced.
Who are these people at UAPx? Let's quickly cross-read their self-portrayal.

(Wow, Gary Voorhis' career highlight was being interviewed for a TV show ;) )

These few pieces of information alone are almost enough for me to have an idea of what to expect. Trekkie scientists living their sci-fi dream (perhaps with Placek and Knuth taking on the role of skeptical examiners).
Okay, maybe it's unfair to polemicize with that. And is my judgment too harsh? But the narrative that this group serves and will continue to develop is actually already obvious here.
With some of them we already meet the good old straw man argument that one has to be open minded - and it would be wrong to claim that Earth is the only inhabited planet. *facepalm*

I don't expect anything from this group. But they will be able to serve the media well and continue what others have already started. Another Headliner for the never ending Festival with the fantastic Bob Bigelow's BUFO & Bystery Business Big Band o_O;)(who could gain a powerful frontman with a success of Ron de Santis)

To this day, Captain Janeway is her all-time favorite character (followed very closely by Seven of Nine!). The search for extra-terrestrial life has been a fascinating subject for her for as long as she can remember. Although a skeptic when it comes to alien encounters stories, she firmly believes that this should not be a taboo subject but rather be the object of a serious scientific investigation, which is why the mission of UAPx is so appealing to her. Since the essence of science is curiosity, open-mindedness, and following the scientific method, it seems obvious and necessary to her to apply these principles to unidentified aerial phenomena as well. The scientific truth is out there!...

Watching it now. I hate to be prejudiced, but the first person speaking is pretty biased (aliens are here). Strange start to a scientific study that should have no bias..

EDIT

At the end, when discussing, Matthew Szydagis is saying important things. Like that there is no smoking gun, that there has no evidence yet been found it is alien. He seems to be quite level headed.

I got halfway through (and they need a serious lesson in slide presentation) but quit when they started complaining about not getting info, and was it a "coverup". The whole thing sounded like a group of conspiracy theorists playing scientist.

I admit I did not watch everything, and skipped indeed the slide bits. Presentations with slides with 90% text are the worst (I learned 'how to present' about 30 years ago and I still remember lesson 1: do not make slides too busy or too much text).
Matthew Szydagis sounds a little frustrated (because the others from his team seem to already have concluded it must be alien?) at the end, by stressing that there is no smoking gun. I think he might be the most "neutral" person in the crew.

However, he was, as far as I could glean (watching it at higher speeds) the first person to use the phrase "coverup", and even put it on a slide. I'm firmly of the opinion that there are always going to be things that governmental entities do not share with the public, and that's as it should be.

I'll have to watch it, maybe at lunch. But we've discussed Szydagis's opinion piece Debunking the Debunkers here in a number of threads. I need to get back to it as I think we've talked about 3 of his 10 points. In that piece at least, he seems to just credulously accept all kinds of dubious UFO claims as factual, from Rendlesham Forest to the Japan Airways sighting. He even throws in the Chilian Airforce sighting, seemingly unaware that it was just an airliner.

Yeah, I think I formed my opinion on a too small amount of data to be statistically valid (my bad by not watching the (long) video carefully)
