Did this Tri-pod run out the way?

Here is phenomena we caught on video a couple of weeks ago. We were racing these wing airplanes with a GoPro Hero 8 set up to capture the racing. My son ran into the camera at high speed with his wing airplane... take a look at the slowmotion footage, it appears that just moments before the crash, that the tripod tried to "Get out of the way" of the crash. After reviewing the video several times, one of my friends who is more knowledgeable about modern cameras discovered that this apparent attempt to "Runaway" was caused by the cameras image stabilization, trying to correct several frames prior to the crash. Great piece of video to explain some of the phenomena that we see in video...

The simplest explanation is that there was a human near the tripod who reacted to the incoming missile. Optical image stabilisation would tend to do the opposite - make the field of view not change until the motion imparted into the camera was too big to compensate.

No one was remotely near the camera, my wife caught it on video from a distance...no one in their right mind would stand in front of these things ...

I think here the best approach would be to get a GoPro Hero 8, and throw paper airplanes at it for a while to see if it reacts the same way.

I think we could hit the camera mount with the exact same type of airplane again.... the image stabilization is trying its best to correct for the tumble of the camera. A paper airplane would not have enough inertia to throw the camera about 30 feet from where it was setup. We will do some testing. I leave for a 4 day trip this afternoon, and I am trying to finish up a Starship HLS thrust vectored model rocket for launch on Sunday evening .... Love your channel Mick... I refer people to your channel all the time!

The camera itself is pretty small and light, you could just balance it on something

Really the first thing to establish is if cameras actually do back-in-time image stabilization. It makes some sense, as you can ease into sudden movements

if you watch it at .25 speed the slo mo side, it looks like the camera is trying to focus on the "face" of the airplane as it approaches. so your paper airplane probably needs a face attached to the front.
