On a related search of Met Office data for contrails the first hit found a 1953 paper with a photo of a contrail and of a distrail. I don't know if it's already been covered but thought the site worth highlighting for the rich content it holds and those willing to invest time in scouring it.

I was literally just looking at those photos, they are in the 1972 book, Clouds of the World

No. There's also a similar photo in the 1957 book "Cloud Study a Pictorial Guide"
