Hi, I've been a frequent visitor to this site but first landed during research for a chemtrails argument.
A couple of years ago I finally hit social media and was very surprised to find that some of my old friends are still thinking like we did when we were sixteen. Which is quite a while ago.
Even more astonishing was how hostile they became when the barrage of woo feed they obviously felt was of interest was challenged.
When someone called me a shill I had to go and look it up.
Is it that the internet has simply revealed to me that everyone is mental or is the internet itself making everyone mental because its unfathomable eternal vastness implies that if it's on the internet it must be true?
Anyway, keep up the good work.

I wanted to make a comment, but it appears that most if not all threads on that subject are closed. So I guess I'll say it here.

Having said that, there are some loose questions I have about the contrail subject that don't quite fall under debunking, but rather factual reassurance. Is there any thread opened where one may pose a few somewhat relevant questions that are not directly attached to debunking a specific example? If so, I'd love to jump in. (I have searched the site for such a thread with no luck)
Anyway. Big thanks to everyone on the site, skeptics and theorists alike. Having all this information concentrated here is certainly convenient and has helped me not only understand, but also appreciate the true beauty of our skies. (It's amazing what we notice when we look up)
Добро пожаловать, Mr. EastHello all
If you have general questions about contrails, you might find them on the sister site Contrail ScienceHello all

damn why cant i edit my post lol =)
I discovered this site when I started researching chemtrails as I have a friend who believes in it and way too many FB friends who do. Every once in a while, I still comment on a post but not often anymore. I just wanted to say that I appreciate the science, logic, and common sense presented here on the subject.
I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good book or scholarly article on the psychology of why people believe in conspiracy theories, and how to deal with it (if at all) when you have friends or family that believe in it?
It's not just chemtrails. I find some of the same closed minds in politics, whether left or right, but for the most part in my own personal experience, I have found more closed minds on the right. Are there simple techniques to open the doors of closed mind?
Hello Metabunk forum members. Mike here. I'm hoping to be a fruitful contributor to this forum in the coming weeks. I started out on the other side (CT) last summer, falling completely headlong into the "rabbit hole". I'm hoping I can develop a proper perspective here - and critical thinking skills - to better evaluate my worldview in a more logical and reasonable manner. Please be patient and kind to me. I have much to learn. Just to give you an idea - I wasn't even aware of what a "logical fallacy" was until recently. I'm self-educated in many schools of thought and never attended a university. Recently, I stumbled across the writings of Thomas Paine and (early) Annie Besant. These two giant intellectual thinkers brought me out of conspiracy/ supernatural thinking, and into the realm of enlightenment. This thread is for any first time poster to (optionally) post an introductory "hi everyone" post, which will also get you "verified" (meaning you can post without anti-spam restrictions) once it has been approved.

one helpful simple technique is to for ex, reword that sentence to... "where it has been shown that people are less likely to accept the science because the solutions (i.e. government controls on CO2 emissions) don't fit with their ideology"where it has been shown that people more extreme right wing political beliefs are less likely to accept the science because the solutions (i.e. government controls on CO2 emissions) don't fit with their ideology.

I take it you are saying it's not so helpful to pigeonhole people that way? i.e. in that example, as extreme right wing (even though for that example there is a strong correlation)one helpful simple technique is to for ex, reword that sentence to... "where it has been shown that people are less likely to accept the science because the solutions (i.e. government controls on CO2 emissions) don't fit with their ideology"
only in the context of 'how do i talk to family and friends'. if youre just making a general point, as you were- not to a specific person- it's fine.I take it you are saying it's not so helpful to pigeonhole people that way?
