What's the deal with Glutathione

By "works" I mean: show me it does whatever you claim it's supposed to do. Show me it gives longer life, better sleep, general well being or whatever.

"My point was
- the only thing glutathione supps claim, or should claim, is to raise GSH levels."

Here's a little bit more on Herb's background

NoParty, first hahaha sorry sometimes its too tempting to stir the pot. You should totally type that :). I've tried to be good and other than mentioning him refraining from referring to anything about that product in this thread.

Getting back the OP's original question, then yes for very healthy (did we agree on a scientific definition of healthy?) individuals there is probably little benefit in buying expensive GSH supplements. For unhealthy people I believe it

In terms of institutions doing the research, Herb did his while working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Primarily around supporting liver function for alcoholics. He's not getting paid to endorse it, he developed it 25 years ago. He's not retired either, still spend his days in the lab at age 85 or what ever it is now.

?? did you not read my last post?

And yet you said:

I've met and heard from plenty of people who have had significant improvements in health. For the average person common benefits can be increased energy, better sleep, improved mental clarity, faster recovery. Looking at the data at a bio-chemistry level indicates there is a longevity/anti-aging effect.

So I'll ask again, what exactly are you claiming the benefits of glutathione suppliments to be?

Because he has a piece of paper on his wall

No campers, because he has the education, training and experience. Because he has the tools to evaluate claims such as the ones you are making; Tools that have been continuously perfected over the history of medical science.

I was interested in getting some blood tests, kinda of out of curiosity, see if anything was out. But he just thought that was a weird request and had no interest. All he gave me was a referral to get my cholesterol levels checked.

Yeah there are tools and people with experience. I like these new services like WellnessFX.

If retract that and rephrase as "In my experience the anecdotal benefits are..." is that ok?

Yes, that is much better, honest, and to the point. By rephrasing it that way, it frames your claims as an opinion based on testimonials, rather than scientific evidence based on peer reviewed research.

First, would like to thank everyone for taking Campers to task, and would like to thank Campers for the leg work in his replies. I did find this chart on a site, though I cannot find the source for the data:

I also had found a similar one that was unlabelled, but provided some further information:

not sure if this is something anyone is looking for. You would have to apply the data Campers quoted in previous posts about levels dropping naturally in everyone. Would also have to wonder if there is any real benefit in having a glutathione level of 323. I know I have read lots of documents on pubmed stating that in order for prostate cancer to happen, or any cancer I have researched, glutathione levels in the cell first have to be depleted.

I am not as well versed on this as Campers, as I have only been studying into since June. Somethings to consider about the questions that have been posed. What is a healthy person? Why do 50% of heart attacks happen in what people consider healthy people? Are pro athletes healthy people? Why do they get cancer? Suppose we will have subjective answers to those questions.

And they are not appropriate questions for Metabunk. See:

Hi My first post here.

Glutathione: speaking as a biochemist GTH we produce in the Liver mainly and in sufficient quantities to cope with anything mother nature can throw at us. There are a couple o frare genetic problems can affect production in which case GTH supplements have to be taken.

GTH is synthesised from an amino acid called Methionine found commonly in protejns in the diet.

In cases of overdose with acetaminophen liver damage is caused by a breakdown product which overwhelms the GTH required to deal with it. In these cases GtH can be given in the emergency room. Better still if Acetaminophen tablets were compounded with methionine (which drug companies refuse to do) there might be less accidental overdose cases.

Having surveyed a lot of the scientific papers I can find no really convincing effect and thus need for GTH supplements.

The human body is remarkable enough in its construction and intricacy having evolved from other species with similar requirements for survival over millions of years.

The supplement industry is big business selling things which in the majority do little harm but don't actually bring positive benefits to those who do not have specific disease states.

Healthiness is relative but in general can be defined as being in homeostatic balance both internally and with external environmental pressures
