What is the best video editor for stepping through videos?

I have been trying to use the VLC player but it keeps freezing.

It's annoying, there is seemingly no good free windows video player with forensic tools like good time line scrubbing and frame by frame with reverse, VLC is okay but doesn't scrub or do frame by frame in reverse. Photoshop is okay but is not free and also has some limits.

There is no Windows version of VideoLoupe.

I have installed the VLC addon "Jump to time (Previous frame) v3" which seems to step forward and backwards fine.

Download and unzip files from:

https://addons.videolan.org/p/1154013/

Copy "Jump to time v3 for VLC 3.lua" to c:/program files/VideoLAN/VLC/lua/extensions and change filename to "Jump to time v3 for VLC 3.luac"

Use the view tab in VLC to turn on the "Jump to time (previous frame) v3" dialog box.

BTW The interactive zoom on VLC player is very useful:

VLC Player->Tools->Effects and Filters->Video Effects

Click on Interactive Zoom and close dialog box

Thanks for that tip! :)

I found this, which some might find useful

https://forevid.com/

Its scrubbing is not he best, but you can load multiple videos, frame by frame and loop them, save bookmarks and export stuff.

Might be helpful to someone.

I use final cut pro on the mac, sure it cost me 500 bucks but I can go frame by frame, enlarge, change the exposure around and add in filters if needed. If you ever need something analyzed feel free to reach out. I can slow the videos down to ultra slow or even just screen record going frame by frame

A lot of video editing stuff downgrades the frame quality in preview modes.

Forensic analysis is a different tool set, it might not matter for some things but it does for others.

Ideally we'd have all the frame by frame, backwards forwards looping and filters bookmarks etc whilst also knowing we were seeing true pixels.

I've started writing my own video viewer as part of Sitrec
https://www.metabunk.org/sitrec/?sitch=video

It's not working with all videos yet, but you can try dragging them in. There's a very simple zoom control. Use < and > to go frame by frame, and the arrow keys to scrub. (and there's a slider at the bottom of the screen).

Early days yet, but I at least hope to make it a full-featured viewer, and at some point incorporate some motion tracking and other image analysis.

There's also some built-in videos.
