Chinese Vessel "Haixun 01" Detected "Pings"

According to Chinese News Paper, one reporter first reported by satellite phone that three people on a boat deployed by the Haixun 01 Rescue Ship detected pings of 37.5KH for a short time on 4/3 at about 16:34 local time . Each of them verified they heard the pings. The first one claimed he heard at least 200 pings for about 3 minutes before he told his companions he heard the sound and two others verified the pings. And then one of them changed the position of the detecting head (which they called Energy Transformer attached to a 2m long pole into the water), then they lost it. They said it was so sudden they didn't think and prepare to record the pings and it didn't mention how long the pings lasted (now they said it lasted more than 10 minutes). At about 15:57 4/5 local time, it detected another pings lasted about one and half minute, and they still try to verify this one.

Question is: are these pings came from the MH370 black box? And why these pings only lasted such a short time when detected? Is it because the signals were weak and in and out? Anyway, this is first good news for so long time.

The technicians who heard the pings compared with the ping sample from Boeing Company and confirmed the sound characteristics are the same.

By the way, the reporter confirmed this team had experience of locating of black box from a downed helicopter in The Yangtze River of China and retrieved it in 2005.

They think the average depths of the bottom of the sea at that area they heard the pings this time is about 5000M and that is about of limit of the black box pings can reach and that explains why a little angle change would lost the signals and they must be at almost vertical point to the box---great news. The only other explanation is some one dropped a "pinger" to direct search before--but do the pinger dropped by searching planes got the same frequencies as the black box? I really doubt

By the way, April 4 is Chinese Memorial Day, most of the Chinese go to their ancestor's and kins burial sites to pay respects and memory--- and that day is beginning of spring raining period so the Chinese believe in the god is weeping. Now many of the Chinese believe that pings found on this day is that God is helping for the restings of the MH370 victims.

Nobody is believing the Chinese---the commander center didn't send in the Australian Navy ship with the american tow ping finder and the British submarine in to verify. And the time is ticking-- the pinging of black box lasts about 30 days and maybe those pings were the last ones it emitted. And unfortunately, the Chinese black box ping finder is the simple one, it only submerge in water 2 m and max detection is about 5000 m.

There is a press conference happening right now. No verification as of yet but two ships headed to area now. Chinese ship heard signal on two different days.

Not the U.S. Navy's pinger locator towed by the AUssie Navy ship which can pick up signals to a depth of 6,100 meters. they are losing time.

The hunt for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 continued as Australian authorities responded to reports that a Chinese patrol ship had detected an ultrasonic “ping” matching the frequency put out by the beacon on a flight recorder. Angus Houston, the Australian retired air chief marshal in charge of the search, announced on Sunday that underwater detection gear towed behind an Australian navy ship, the Ocean Shield, had also detected a sound.

Finally, they decided to send in British "Echo" to the area to help search. It is confirmed that the black box finder from Chinese "Haixun 01" was provided by the same manufacturer of black box, but it's a portable device, has a limit detectable range of abt 5000 m. But the US tower can submerge thousands of meters under water but it still plowing in another region to verify the "noise" it heard yesterday (it was not said how long and what frequency the noise was). Houston confirmed if it didn't find anything, they will send the Australian ship to the "Haixun 01" area. But, again, time is of essence. The FDR pinging might die anytime now. It is exact 30 days today. What a pity!

The two Chinese detected locations was 2 km apart at abt. 25 degree South, 101 degree East, the guy who first heard it is the leader of the search team and listened for "at least 200 pings" before called others, has decade of experience and involved in other black box rescue missions, so quite reliable.

So frustrated with these dinosaur technology used in billion dollar airplane business. They even can't detect the direction of the black box. Even the sonar used in WII was better than this shit. I have a friend flying amature drone an his real time communication system seemed better :)

Looks like an old Nat Geo map - the sort my dad used to get as inclusions with the mag in the 1960's and 70's! :)

Blame eth Chinese for using hand-held hydrophones - which is actually WW1 technology.

The fact that someone uses "old" technology doesn't mean there isn't better stuff available - it is just what was on the ship at the time.

Also of course the billion-dollar aircraft business is horrendously expensive - the 777 was designed in the 1980's, and its technology mostly reflects that vintage. Changing it costs millions.

Yea, unfortunately it is not "Made in China", it is provide by the exact company who produced the black box. Though the 777 was designed in '80s, the black box technology should have been updated long ago.

The black box technology is continually updated - these days they are solid state and digitally record dozens of parameters rather than the old stainless steel "tape" of my day.

It is het Underwater Location Beacon that is the "issue" - it is attached to the FDR & CVR, but is not part of it. The current FAA advisory circular was introduced in 1983 - FAA Advisory Circular AC-21-10A - the previous AC was dated 1971 but I can't find a copy online to compare.

In 2011 (in the wake of the Air France disaster) the FAA had started the process to replace ULB's with a 30 day battery life with new versions with a 90 day battery - here's the notification of the proposed change:

SUMMARY: This is a confirmation notice for the planned revocation of all Technical Standard Order authorizations issued for the production of Underwater Locating Devices (Acoustic) (Self-Powered) manufactured to the TSO-C121 and TSO-C121a specifications. These actions are necessary because the planned issuance of TSO-C121b, Underwater Locating Devices (Acoustic) (Self-Powered), minimum performance standard (MPS) will increase the minimum operating life of Underwater Locating Devices from 30 days to 90 days.

The isn't much else you can do with ULB's - they can't be radio because radio doesn't propagate under water.

the next big advance is likely to be some form of real-time reporting.

Houston said on Sunday that there had been another “fleeting” signal picked up 24 hours earlier by the Haixun 01, on Friday afternoon. The two detections took place about two kilometres apart.

“In an ocean that size two kilometres is not a large distance,” Houston said, adding that the lead was “encouraging [but] unverified until such time as we can provide unequivocal determination”.

The third signal was detected on Sunday morning by the Australian navy ship Ocean Shield, located around 300 nautical miles away from the Chinese ship.

That's great now. The Australian Navy ship which towed the American locator got confirmed pingings 300 miles from the Chinese location and that's impossible for the black box even the FDR and the Voice Recorder separated--- the pinging locators would not have that range----Now really becomes mysterious, is some one try to divert the searching?

confirmed pingings 300 miles from the Chinese location
Is that confirmed? The news I got said they were "acoustic events" which could be from sonar. ie: sumberged objects on the sea floor

ETA:
Angus Houston, announced on Monday that the Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield detected two separate signals within the northern part of the search area.

“Today I can report some very encouraging information which has unfolded over the last 24 hours. The towed pinger locator deployed from the Australian vessel Ocean Shield has detected signals,” he said.

“Significantly this would be consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder.”

On Sunday reports emerged through Chinese media outlets that a Chinese patrol ship, the Haixun 01, detected a pulse that could be from one of the black boxes of the missing plane.

Haixun 01 briefly picked up the signal again – almost 24 hours after the initial contact – and Ocean Shield also later detected a pulse about 300 nautical miles from the location of the Chinese vessel.

It was confirmed, and Houston himself listened to the record of the Australian ship ping locator and said it was very similar to the black box pinging and Australian ship said they listened one time more than one hour (1:20) until they turned the ship. The two black boxes thrown 300 miles apart? I think the Chinese location is in very narrow range, because that device only has 5000 M range and average sea bottom is 4,500 M deep and two spots detected were within 2 KM distance. But Australian ship is a deep tow and their American locator is of much greater range --- at least 6000 M above.

Now things became more and more suspicious. Not only one, but two locations 300 miles apart all fell on the "scientific analyzed" arc got consistent pingings then disappeared on the "predicted battery life period". What a convenient coincidence! Are there US, Russian or Chinese nuclear subs there pinging with their sonars for the wreckage but keeping secrets for military reasons? Or there is some cover up to let us believe everything is what it was so called "analyzed" then we might not find it at all forever in this "predicted area"? And something horrible happened better be buried forever?

There's no point in attributing deliberate deception to any results, just presume people are doing what they say they are - searching for the wreckage and having difficulty finding it because it's tricky and the ocean is a huge rough deep place.

Wow, do you sleep with your eyes open?

What, specifically, makes any of this suspicious?
Trouble with sub's in the area might be that active sonar might interfere with reception of a ping signal.

Or perhaps it is really the andromodeans using their hyperwave relay to distract us from the impending asteroid collision with earth?

Right to the point, and 100% accurate.

This is the sea bottom area from where the pingings were detected, and it is very complicated terrain.

It's sort of frightening when you see this and know people were trapped on that plane and could be sitting at the bottom of this. What an amazing landscape miles underwater. This is definitely going to be a difficult task.
