Strange Lights in the Skies of Mexico - Sept 7th

There's a lot of discussion going on about these lights that were filmed in Mexico yesterday (September 7th)
There are multiple videos from different spots which to me rule out CGI.
One of the theories being brought up is that these are Starlink satellites shining through the clouds, but to me the lights seem too bright for that.

What are we seeing here? Are they rotating?

Puts me in mind if something meteroic, or re-entering space junk. The possibility of something like that shining through broken cloud cover seems a decent hypothesis.

Not necessarily; there have been hoaxes in the past with multiple angles to make it more believable. Not saying it's the case here though.

Any possibility it is flares?
 
A reddit user pointed out that while there's a VERY coincidental passing of Startlink satellites in that location, the viewing conditions were supposed to be very poor.

If the number next to DIM is the apparent magnitude, then that's fainter than most people can spot with the naked eye (the higher the number, the fainter is the object). For example:
Venus at it's brightest is -4.92
Vega is +0.03
Polaris is +1.98

Could it be some abnormality causing Starlink satellites to shine extra bright?

I would not rule it out. I'm having difficultly tracking down the original videos, as there's a lot of reposting from clickbait channels. I'm searching for "ovni jalisco"

I've seen meteors breaking and burning up as well as re-entering booster rockets, and this seems much slower than either of those.
 
Not necessarily true. Yes it's true for illumination flares which have a parachute and descend slowly, but decoy flares burn very intensely for a short duration.

They look like IR decoy flares to me as well. The Mexican Air Force has an airbase (Zapopan) near Jalisco, but the light a/c, helicopters, and trainers based there aren't likely to be equipped with decoy flares. Could be a transient combat a/c equipped with flares, wouldn't be a surprise if drug cartels have MANPADs like Redeye or SA-7/SA-16.

I was thinking they were just seeing the moments when it shows through the clouds, with the actual movement possibly being faster? How similar it looks from different vantage points may rule against that idea, though.
 
it is stationary whatever it is. if it is a festival/car dealership advert or something wouldnt the local press know it?
The Mexican press articles I've seen so far don't have anything like that yet. Some articles claim that it's Starlink, refering to the timing coincidence. If so, what would cause what was supposed a very dim startlink pass to become possibly the brightest ever recorded?

It would also be nice if we could identify one of the locations in the videos and make sure that the cameras are actually pointing were starlink would be.

i found some areas that look like the vid with the guys hanging outside the store, but i wasnt near Tequila..i dont know what that means "Tequila country sides"

I think what's not immediately apparent with these lights is that the motion seems to be in one direction, (say left to right), but on closer inspection the lights appear in the other direction (right to left). I've tried to find a video & timecode that shows it best.

This is fits the suggestion that what we are seeing is aircraft (possibly Mexican Air Force F-5) flying in one direction and dispensing flares rearwards.
 
I lean toward the suggestion that it's a blimp with moving lights. There seems to be a finite length of travel of the lights, which would agree with an object of a certain length, and certainly one that could display messages could also show a pattern of bright dots instead. They've been used there before; in March of this year one was deployed above Mexico City to protest against violence toward women. That one had a painted sign. I haven't discovered info about any with lighted signs.


The blimp was seen from the sky in many of the areas where the government has erected fences to protect monuments before the expected commemorative march. Several tweets made reference to this fact, proclaiming “if they build fences, we’ll take to the sky.”

A blimp would likely have sustained lighting, each of these videos seem to a show a 10-12 second "event"

If they are IR decoy flares from a Mexican AF a/c, they are more likely to have been popped by a tactical transport, assault helicopter, or a Pilatus ground attack aircraft. The IR missile threats the Mexicans would face are MANPADs from cartels or separatist groups like the Zapatistas and EPR.

Keep in mind, it's not uncommon for military a/c to deploy flares nearing the end of their service/shelf life just to get rid of them. It's far easier to pop and be rid of them than to store, transport, and destroy them after they are time expired.

The Sun going super nova on us. But even though proving a negative is tricky, I am reasonably certain that did not happen.
 
My first impression was, like some here already suggested, a plane throwing out some flare-decoys, possibly behind clouds (you can barely see it, but I think there is heavy overcast).

To summarize this possibility. Plane releasing flares from right to left with overcast creating some diffused illumination. The flares dying out creates the illusion of a rotation from left to right. The timestamp @flarkey posted above really does look like the plane and flare explanation.
 
Actually, take a look at this reddit post making further connections to Starlink. This twitter video even shows how much Starlink can flare up brighter than expected
 
We really, really could do with some geolocation, but there's nothing in any video I have seen that's even close to a clue.

So it would seem, as noted above, whatever it is, is over the Bosque La Primavera.

FWIW, there appears to be a watch tower located in the Bosque La Primavera. From the BLP website:

The San Miguel tower is located within the Natural Protected Area (ANP) Bosque La Primavera in the municipality of Tala, with a height of more than 2 thousand meters.

Just spitballing, but could some of the videos be people on the watch towers with lights walking around the outside? There are at least 2 towers (torre) that I can find in the BLP. They are both in between Zapopan and Tala, two of the places the videos are claimed to come from. In a previous post I found a watchman claiming that the San Miguel tower (Torre 3) was over 2000m high.

Here are the locations of the 2 towers. Tower 3 only shows up when one really zooms in:

That's Guadalajara in the distance, looking east from the tower, and Zapopan is a suburb. Tala is about the same distance to the west, so the tower sounds like a good location.

Yes, forgot to insert this screen grab. Looking from tower 2 towards Cerro Chapulin, one is looking at Zapopan. It may even be the Univeridad Cuauhtemoc that can be seen.

But I think tower 2 is closer to the edges at least, of Zapopan than to Tala. Tower 3, San Miguel, is further south but I though closer to being equal distance between the cities, but maybe not by much:

11 miles from the outskirts of Zapopan and 7 miles from Tala.

It's 12 miles from Tala to tower 2 and 5.5 miles to Zapopan.

I'm thinking the lights seem closer, but maybe not.

i'm suspicious of starlink because how could all these locations be experiencing the same hole in the clouds?

@Stingray this town is maybe interesting there are only 2 paved roads and they both go in this direction (highlighted)..so her alleged filming is North west ish...is that where starlink was?

I hope someone local will pursue this. Several of these videos clearly show ground features in the foreground. If the people who took the videos can be contacted it should be possible to determine, with some accuracy, where they were standing and the direction the cameras were pointing. With the GPS coordinates of the camera positions and the azimuth to the lights in the sky it should be possible to calculate the distance to the objects. That could, at least, establish if they were airborne or in low orbit.
