I think this is interesting. I don't know whether Loeb's musing, that reconnaissance aircraft might be responsible for the transients, is a workable hypothesis, but if it is then it's unlikely U-2 flights played a major part. if they did it would...

Viability does not seem to me to be the problem. An extraordinary hypothesis supported by the very weak evidence of an anecdote may or may not be correct, but it can never be proven (or even strongly supported) using just anecdotes. It does not...
