But could this be a superior mirage effect due to an inversion layer? The "white layer" would then be the sky, with an inverted image of the peak above it. This would explain the transient nature.

I think Lacatski is mostly honest about AAWSAP. They made that database, those DIRDs, researched on the ranch, traveled to Brazil for some interviews or research, and so on.
