Short version:
  1. Go to FlightAware.com
  2. Enter the flight number
  3. Scroll down and select the day of of the flight
  4. Under "Flight Details" on the right, click "View Track log"
  5. Click the Google Earth button to download the file
  6. https://www.metabunk.org/sitrec/?sitch=nightsky
  7. When the globe has loaded, drag in the downloaded KML file
  8. Click "Sync Start Time to Track" (or set the time manually)
  9. Change "Camera Motion" to "KML Track"
  10. Adjust time, and camera heading

Is there a way to plot a latitude and longitude in addition to the flight track? Flightaware logs only goes back 8 months and several NUFORC reports provide geolocations without flight numbers. For example: 'I am an airline captain and saw racetrack lights south of San Antonio (SAT R-180/030)." Without a flight track it looks like there isn't a way to plot a point other than guessing based on the map's city lights. Any advice would be really appreciated.

ADSB Exchange provides a reasonably long period (not sure how long exactly) historical tracking data which allows you to find a plane based on time/date/location and then you get the KML.

ADSB exchange goes back 3 years - no account needed. FlightRadar24 goes back 1 year with a Gold Account and 3 years with a business account.

You shouldn't see much difference in the flares for many 20 to 30 miles around a location (maybe even more).
