Hello and a questionabout black line in sky

Hello, My name is joe but I go by Guido which was my beloved dog and my profile image. I found this forum as I was trying to see if I could find an explanation of something I saw yesterday evening. The following is a countdown of events.

I reside in Huntington Beach, California. Yesterday evening at about 6:45pm I went out with my dogs so they could do their evening potty before bed...(we have lots of coyotes in the area so I go out with them).. I looked up in the sky and could not believe what I saw... The sky was really cloudy and the moon was lighting the clouds above... but right through the center of the clouds was a crisp black line like somebody took an eraser to it.... I got my phone to take some photo's... The clouds really did not photographs at all...All I got was a very black photo with a little bit of cloud in it... Quite strange....not sure if it was my phone or what.. but I do not have a regular camera......... I went to bed but it bothered me all night long. This morning I figured I would see if I could put the photo's I took through a program and enhance the image... No such luck....
In doing some searches I found some similar cloud structure... but could not really find anything that resembled what I saw. I downloaded a similar "cloud look" I saw in the sky then put a line through it to help convey what I saw. The line in the sky looked like somebody just took an eraser through the clouds....Here is the mock-up image.

I can post the photo's I took but as I mention nothing even showed-up.... That is a different mystery to me... lol....

In reading some of the threads here It might be a contrail shadow?...

I thank you in advance....

For the record Some of the photo's I took. I swear the clouds were very defined... they did not show in my photo's...

It does sound like a contrail shadow. When there's a bright moon over thin clouds they can be quite well defined. You don't often see them at night though, as they are harder to see. You also usually see the contrail as well - it depends on how thick the clouds are. Was it like this one?

Yes it was very similar to this but much more well-defined... I found this video I believe it's actually how I got to this forum..
I really wished I could have gotten some really good photographs of it

I too, live in the Los Angeles area.
I have occasionally witnessed dark lines made in the clouds when commercial airliners fly through a low cloud layer, .... when they are attaining (climbing or descending) toward their needed altitude. They will plow a path through a certain cloud layer, much like what Deirdre noted ... "distrail".

BTW.... "distrail" is an abbreviated short for "dissipation trail"
