The Democrats are proving that their lust for power is their prime motivating force and they don’t care what they have to do to maintain, solidify and expand their grip. Ted Cruz tells us what they are up to:

“When you think it can’t get any worse, it does. This year, I’m sorry to tell you, the United States Senate is going to be voting on a constitutional amendment to repeal the First Amendment.

I am telling you, I am not making this up. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has announced the Senate Democrats are scheduling a vote on a constitutional amendment to give Congress the plenary power, the unlimited authority, to regulate political speech because elected officials have decided they don’t like it when the citizenry has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done.

They don’t like it when pastors in their community stand up and speak the truth. And it makes their lives inconvenient when they’re not standing for principle and actually that’s pointed out back home.

And I’ll note this amendment, which has 41 Democratic senators as co-sponsors, 41 Democrats have signed on to repealing the First Amendment. It explicitly says nothing in this new amendment shall abridge the freedom of the press.

So The New York Times is protected, but it doesn’t say the same thing about the freedom of speech. It doesn’t say the same thing about religious liberty. What it says is that politicians in Washington have unlimited constitutional authority to muzzle each and every one of you if you’re saying things that government finds inconvenient.”

If this is true, and we have no reason to doubt what Senator Cruz is saying, this assault on our Constitution would certainly rise to the level of treason on behalf of the Democrats involved. Let’s hope they rethink this one.

Alright, found this on a skype conversation.. This seems to be spreading. I doubt it, as the site seems dubious.. :/ Is there a real story here or is this just conspiracy talk?

This is about H.J. Res 20, which proposes the following amendment to regulate campaign finance in federal elections only:

ARTICLE —

SECTION 1. To advance the fundamental principle of political equality for all, Congress shall have power to regulate the raising and spending of money and in-kind equivalents with respect to Federal elections, including through setting limits on—
(1) the amount of contributions to candidates for nomination for election to, or for election to, Federal office; and
(2) the amount of expenditures that may be made by, in support of, or in opposition to such can- didates.

SECTION 2. To advance the fundamental principle
of political equality for all, a State shall have power to regulate the raising and spending of money and in-kind equivalents with respect to State elections, including through setting limits on—
(1) the amount of contributions to candidates for nomination for election to, or for election to, State office; and
(2) the amount of expenditures that may be made by, in support of, or in opposition to such can- didates.

SECTION 3. Congress shall have power to implement
and enforce this article by appropriate legislation.’’.

So in no way does it repeal the 1st amendment.

typical political hyperbole to be sure--but some would argue that donating to your favorite candidates or party is free speech (or parties working against the candidate you don't like). I am probably for this amendment, but I can certainly see why some people see it as an erosion on the first.

I think you could also argue that it strengthens the first, as it prevents one person from drowning out the speech of another.

But regardless of if you think it strengthens or weakens it, the bunk here is Cruz's claim:

"the United States Senate is going to be voting on a constitutional amendment to repeal the First Amendment."

Which is approaching a bare-faced lie.

Interesting that a Republican sees an attempt to regulate campaign finance as a threat to their principles. The best power money can buy, and all that.

Most politicians like power and hold on to it indefinitely if allowed. There's no surprise there. But this talk about pastors standing up and speaking the truth is a bit of a joke.

The First Amendment is a good starting point for scaremongering-driven support. Nice try.
