I believe I've heard of crashes because of that. You're saying jet engines in a strong head wind will cause acceleration, but a propeller driven plane would be slowed down, somewhat, if it is going straight and not in a dive?

Ironically, a head wind increases the airspeed (which can be dangerous as well).
A sudden tailwind can decrease the airspeed and cause loss of lift or a stall, long before the airspeed becomes zero.

The key word was "hover", which would be a ground speed of zero, and hence a headwind of zero. Which is a bit of a paradox as they assumed a strong headwind to match the "ground speed".

Cessna 150, flying slow at 50 knots air speed, into a 25 knot head wind, results in 25 knots ground speed; it's only bad news if the pilot did not account for that and runs out of fuel.

With a typical landing speed for a 737 at around 130 knots, this also neatly demonstrates the unreliability of the casual observer's claims about the estimated speed of any flying objects.

The first cloud picture looks like a fallstreak hole / hole punch cloud. Perhaps the falling cold air caused the spiral of ascending moist air to appear, which has been displaced as the cloud cover is moving.
