Sighting after taking picture of scenery

Hello,

I would like to report a strange object that I noticed after reviewing pictures I took of the scenery around lake "Lac de Matemale" in the French Pyrenees. In one of the pictures I noticed an unusual object, especially after zooming in.

At the moment I took the picture, I did not see the object itself. It was a very clear and sunny day, and I was focused on photographing the surrounding mountains. Because of the bright sunlight, the screen of my mobile phone was highly reflective, and the small object was not noticeable at the time.

It is also possible that the object moved very fast and was therefore difficult or impossible to observe with the naked eye, while I may have captured it by chance due to the very short shutter speed of the camera.

In the attachments I included:

the original photo;

two cropped enlargements;

A screenshot containing metadata;

and a screenshot showing my exact location.

The metadata shows where the picture was taken. I was standing still with my back towards the lake and facing west towards Les Angles and the mountains behind it. The picture was taken at may 25 2026, 13:33 local time. The sun position must have been approximately SSW, which appears consistent with the reflection visible on the object.

I hope someone is able to analyse the image and metadata further. I have a background in amateur astronomy and astrophotography and I am familiar with many natural aerial and optical phenomena. However, I cannot identify or explain this object.

The area was very quiet at the time. I only heard natural sounds from the surroundings. I do not think the object was a drone, airplane, helicopter, bird, nearby insect, lens flare, or another obvious explanation, although I remain open to technical analysis.

I am not asking for confirmation of an extraterrestrial origin, only for an objective technical analysis of the object.

Thanks!

Adriaan

As you didn't notice the object at the time, maybe it wasn't as visually striking "in the real world" as it appears in the photos.
You raised another possibility, that the object travelled so fast that it traversed your field of view faster than you could register but it was captured by the camera.

Both possibilities might be involved, but it is also possible only the first (visually unimpressive to the eye at the time) plays a part and the object was so everyday that though it might have been briefly visible to the naked eye it didn't get your attention.

There must be quite a few flying insects around fields/ pasture/ heathland etc. in late spring, and if one flies past in front of us it's unlikely we'd bother to remember. If you're concentrating on taking pictures of the landscape, you might not notice.

Flying insects captured in a photo or on video/ film, only noticed after the image/ footage is examined, have been interpreted as UFOs before,

Agree, it looks like an insect. I'm going to guess maybe a cicada, given the blunt head (assuming it is going left to right!) and the hint I think I am seeing of a bulbous eye.

As soon as you arrive in Provence you can hear the unmistakeable sound of cicadas (cigales) chirping in the heat. According to Provençal myth, the cicada was sent by God to disrupt the peasants' endless siestas and stop them from growing too lazy. There are about 2,500 species of cicada, around 15 of which live in the south of France. They have a four-year life span but only a few weeks are spent above ground, during which time the males sing to attract females by contracting and relaxing ribbed membranes inside their stomachs. The cicada is the one of the world's loudest insects, recording sounds of up to 120 decibels (Emphasis in original)

I admit that I have cicadas on my mind at the moment -- the drone of these insects is part of the summer "sound track" that I grew up with here, as it is in Provence, and I have been waiting to hear the first cicada of summer! Maybe tonight... And it may be too early to hear and see them in France yet, as it seems to be here.

Of course, it could also be a fly or a bee.
