Does drug use cause paranoia or do paranoids seek out psychoactive drugs?

Common thread seems to be that a lot of these youtube-conspiracists are pretty baked when they make their videos. Am I engaging in selection or confirmation bias or is there really a correllation between heavy drug use and paranoid thinking?

Note: Second video is a long wrambling affair where the videographer is on the street evangelizing for the cause and his website. Skip to 16:12 mark to hear one of his encounters with someone on the street. Crazy as he is and sounds, he hooks her with references to youtube and the chemtrail lawsuit...

Conspiracists are drug users? or youtubers are drug users? I would argue that a lot of people who post youtube videos are pretty baked... linking drug use to conspiracists seems like bias and a character attack. How many ae911 videos are there? None have anyone that look "baked" in them.

It seems like a valid question. Paranoia and reduced reasoning skills are direct effects of being stoned, so if people get stoned a lot, then it would seem likely they would be more susceptible to conspiracies.

Obviously not all conspiracists are stoners, and vice versa. But there could be a correlation, and anecdotally there seems to be.

The thread should probably be re-titled to something like "What motivates conspirational thinking? are drugs or mental illness common or rare factors?"

The reason I ask the question is in regard primarily to those I've been interacting with on a surfing forum (the place where I was introduced to chemtrails) and to the youtube community of chemtrail/HAARP believers. Heavy marijuana use seems more common among that crowd than among the people with which I interact in real life. Youtubers like those above and these:

Do not seem rational. Few do. There's the Peekay guy that was obsessed with Quantas.

Really I'm just trying to wrap my head around how people can look at a 22 degree ice halo around the sun or moon when there is thick cirro-stratus and freak out about it and then become so agitated if you contradict them with known facts.

And actually, the only truthers that I've interacted with in real life are on drug (N = 2 though so small sample) and they reject mainstream science in general but trust paranoid theories without question (truther, chemtrailer, vaccine, HAARP/NEXRAD weather mod). Both have been known to splat my inbox with Alex Jones material. They believe in "energies, homeopathy, chi, chiropractic, etc..."

Just want to know how many are rational people in error or simply observing facts from another angle and how many people are whacked out of their mind either chemically or organically.

Then who's to say I'm rational. Half the time I think that these conspiracy hoaxes are promoted at least in part by large corporations that want to discredit opposition. I've got no evidence for that idea but it never seems to fail that you hold a meeting on an environmental issue (like water pollution or water allocation on the St. Johns River) and a crackpot like Harold Saive will show up.

Hmmmm . . . So discrediting a opposition to a rational concern by suggesting crazy people support the same concern is a conspiracy of corporate operatives . . . sounds like Mad Magazine's classic cartoon Spy versus Spy . . . LoL!!!

Another thing, 2 days ago I saw
chemtrails over my area for the first time. I've always seen pictures of them or seen them on youtube. But I've never actually seen the shit happen before my own eyes. 3 or 4 jets were flying over making some criss cross designs, not perfect square grids, more like adjacent angles. I even called my wife and had her go outside and look at them and I was kind of explaining to her what was happening. At that same time a little higher up you could see a normal jet with it's contrail disappearing, so you could see the stark difference between the two trails.

Very high concentration of conspiracy buffs. This is the sort of encounter that spawned this thread.
