Mayk Leão is a mini-influencer from Brazil with 10k followers.
His Instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/mayk.leao/
He lives on a small farm in the municipality of Campo Largo, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Brazil.
He rescues vulnerable animals on his property, which has more than 200 animals, including dogs, cats, geese, horses, and turkeys.
As he takes care of these rescued animals, he shares his routine online. He recently went viral because a chick was born with a mark that looked like an eyebrow: G1 article.
His follower count reached 1million+ today, two days after he documented his strange encounter with a UFO on Sunday, 31st of May.

The entire account was registered live as it occurred, and can be seen in a compilation on his Instagram profile, or in the YouTube link below;

Summary of events with direct links:
  1. The animals became unusually startled, and Mayk went to check on them. He found several of the animals paying attention to an old structure near the border of his property. Fearing it might be a jaguar, he decided not to approach it. He heard a motorcycle, and presumed it was a man getting fruit from the local trees: Animals Startled

  2. Mayk had the perception that there was an unusual number of contrails in the sky, some coming from what he assumed to be Fighter Jets: Jet Contrails
  3. As Mayk was repairing an electric fence, he started hearing strange noises: Noise 1 and Noise 2. In these and the night stories, he describes the sound as:
    "[…] something growling […] like a person choking […] breathing […] like a rope snapping, being pulled […] like a ratchet [...] it sounded like a ship next to my house […] the sound of a rope being tightened and pulled […] but it's a voice […] I don't know what it was, it sounds like a wild pig, but it's also not."
  4. At Sundown, he saw a strange formation of lights near the mountain ranges and treetops: UFO Story.
    "[…] there are several lights… yellow, blue… […] it is above the top of the mountain range, something is blinking a lot […] that over there is the river […] there is something there and it is round […] there is no road there, no mountain road, nothing […] it is very big and it blinks, it is surrounded by lights, and it is not an airplane […] it is very beautiful […] it is round and has many lights around it, it is stopped above the river, it is in the middle of nowhere […] it is surreal […] it is very beautiful […] nobody lives there, it is in the middle of the woods […] there are many lights, there is blue, green, turquoise, and it is round, you can see it above the mountain range blinking."
  5. After some time, Mayk could no longer identify the object because it "went dark." However, after a few minutes, he saw the UFO lift out of the river's waters and fly over his house: Fly-over story. He described the object:
    "[…] it is huge, shaped like an eye, with a red underbelly, it's giant, six times the size of my house, around 60 meters[…]."
  6. Here, he states that he managed to film the object apparently "leaving" and moving away: Leaving Blinking Star story.
  7. After the whole episode, he drew what he saw: Drawing story.

Soon after the story went viral on Monday, three traditional and reputable media outlets visited and interviewed him.

The obvious conclusion would be a Guerrilla marketing campaign for the new Spielberg movie, Disclosure Day:
The noise that we can hear in the footage is extremely similar to the one featured in the movie trailers; Mayk states that the sounds displayed are indeed similar, but 'different':

  • External Quote:
    "What I heard was Insect-like [...], like a cricket inside my ear [...] but at the same time it wasn't - [he then starts to distinguish what he believes a cricket sounds like, by beating his own teeth, and what he actually experienced; a more organic, wet, and unrhythmic noise]"
    ;

The noise that Mayk experienced and we can hear on video is very similar to the one witnessed by Whistleblower Colonel Uyrangê Hollanda, commander of arguably the best UFO case in Brazil, "Operation Saucer" (often referred to as the "Colares Case", or "Vampire Lights case"). The Colonel describes a noise "like a ratchet, a bicycle ratchet [...] a ratchet going backwards" - that description [ratchet] is also used by Mayk as he attempts to describe what he experienced.

I did some research with the tools currently at my disposal, which pretty much are the images Mayk posted, Google Earth, and Flight Radar;

The user @vinionx compared sunset and daylight pricures of the same location, to find where the UFO was located at; https://www.instagram.com/vinionx/ -

To me this suggests that the lights are coming from the mountain range that is behing the one that is closer to the camera.

I searched the area for the geographic location and found Mayk's home on Google Earth;

And indeed, Google earth suggests this is possible.

Looking at what lies there, we can see;

A Camping Site, a Sightseeing lookout, and an agricultural field. Several dirt roads connect these spots. They are 9.6km from Mayk's house. The farmer suggested that the UFO would be flying above the river, which is located around 650m from his house.

I looked at flight radar and nothig unusual was seen in terms of fighter jets. But we do see an Embraer Praetor 500 passing almost exactly above Mayk's location, at around 14:30 that afternoon of the 31st.

Next step: Calculate the length of the "UFO" / Lights based on this observed distance. [To do]

The obvious conclusion would be a Guerrilla marketing campaign for the new Spielberg movie, Disclosure Day:

Or this Mayk guy jumping on the coat tails. On the one hand, a major Hollywood release from Spielberg, that has a sizable marketing budget wouldn't really need a guerrilla campaign. It already has a big real one. Maybe for Brazil? I don't know how these things get pushed internationally. I guess the big shots at the studio might think: Hey all the kids are using guerrilla marketing, maybe we should to.

On the other, if this Mayk is a mini-influencer and his follower count went from 10k to 1M in a matter of days after posting a UFO video, maybe he just leaned into what is popular in UFOs right now, and that includes strange insect sounds from the new movie. It seems to have worked.

I haven't really looked into the details because, personally, I think it's a waste of time. But in cases like this, my default assumption is always that it's a small influencer creating content to gain more followers. It's the same story with different people posting UFO, ghost, or Bigfoot encounters. And apparently, it worked. Only a couple of thousand people cared about the rescue animals, but a million wanted to see some blinking lights among the trees.

I have a hard time believing this is some kind of "guerrilla marketing campaign" for a $100 million movie. I'd expect them to come up with something more interesting than this, but perhaps I'm overestimating the minds of the media people at Universal…

It is possible.
But after taking some time looking at his content, how he speaks, what he has done, I think his fear is honest and sincere.
I believe he saw those lights at the camping, and got "hyped up" through the online interaction and ended 'seeing' things later that night, such as the Flying Saucer.

I did some basic math; perhaps those among us who are better with numbers and physics could tell me if this is indeed correct:
We obviously do not know the size of the "object", I suppose an estimate can be done using the image that we have.
Using the fixed field of view (FOV) based on the typical optical specifications of iPhone cameras [Mayk claims to use. one], we might get an estimate size. Standard models use a main lens with a 26 mm equivalent focal length, which has a 69° horizontal field of view in native photos. Newer Pro lines adopt a 24 mm equivalent lens, with an approximate angle of 73.7°.

Because the object emits light, variables must be taken into account when interpreting the size in the photo. Optical diffraction phenomena in the lens and the blooming effect, characterized by electrical charge leakage between neighboring pixels in saturated digital sensors, artificially expand the visual representation of light sources. The point spread function causes small objects or even point light sources to appear to occupy a much larger area in the image than their actual physical size. Instead of calculating 8 pixels, we will use only 7.

We do not now where the object is, but we have two hypothesis right now;

H1: Mayk believes the object was above the river, at a distance of 650 meters.
H2: The object is at the campsite on the farthest mountain range, at a distance of 9500 meters.

The vertical image posted by Mayk on Instagram has a resolution of 1280 pixels high by 720 pixels wide; the larger dimension inherits the original field of view of the lens after the aspect ratio adjustment. At a distance of 9500 meters, the calculated geometric size for 7 horizontal pixels is approximately 72 meters. If the device is a recent Pro model with a 24 mm lens, the object would be approximately 75 meters.

The viewpoint road near the camping site is 80 meters long. There is also an adjacent downhill curve, which would add another 35 meters. This profile can be observed in the Google Earth elevation profile, with a variation of only 4 meters. It resembles exactly the shape observed in the video.

It is highly possible that the UFO was a convoy or group of cars parked there with their headlights on - specially because Mayk didn't know there was a camping, viewpoint lookout site, and homesteads there.

Could atmospheric diffraction, as well as light passing through bushes and leaves, cause the color variation observed from a distance? If so, I think it's a wrap on the visuals, guys.

Is it possible to find information about the activities at this campsite for today? Or perhaps information regarding events on social media?

Just going by appearance of the flickering, I'd suggest maybe construction equipment or emergency vehicles.

The funny thing is some self-professed Brazilians in the reddit discussions argue it's implausible for the lights to be from construction vehicles because infrastructure never gets fixed in Brazil.
Fun -- you could challenge them to a game -- here is one picture of road paving happening in Brazil:
delme.jpg

https://phys.org/news/2019-10-brazil-highways-amazon-developmentand-destruction.html

If they can match that with an equally clear and well-sourced picture of an actual alien spaceship in Brazil, we can go find another picture of road work -- and we'll see which is more common! (I think we already have won.)

So it's more likely to be aliens?

HAHAHAHA
To be fair, that joke is so legit!
It's more likely that Aliens come here than local governments fixing infra :p

A Hiking Influencer (Luciano Tiggre) who lives nearby decided to go where he thinks the UFO was located.

In my humble opinion, that is also the wrong location. It is in the direction of the lights, but at the wrong distance.

Here's a highly technical graphic to illustrate why its a valid confusion;
