The recent weeks have had an intense debates about whether colloidal silver works on ebola. I know there is a specific thread for this, but I want to focus more on a specific case that is often brought up as an example of how colloidal silver supposedly treats ebola.

I think most of you have seen the claims made by Natural Solutions Foundation's founder Rima Laibow how her product was sent to Sierra Leone and allegedly "did wonders" on 500 patients.
http://drrimatruthreports.com/this-works-sierra-leone-information-minister/

I know Rima got a long history of quackery, and it just seem to be the case without any doubt. I think most of us will just dismiss Rima's claim as simply a marketing scheme created to cash in on the fear of an eventual ebola pandemic.

But personally I like to gather more specific information about the case, and it seem to be very little information about this beyond what Rima Laibow have claimed. A lot of "truth-oriented" sites have mirrored this story, stating it is proof colloidal silver cures ebola.

As you can find basically no other source than Laibow about this, I would like to concentrate on some specific points in the alleged email correspondence that just feels odd.

  • What you have here is basically an alleged speech claimed to have been held at a local hospital, something that have been translated by the imam that allegedly sent the silver in the first place. An email was sent by Rima to Kanu to confirm that the translation accurately reflects Kanu's speech. Nobody seem to know if this speech was held or not, except for Rima. I cannot find any other source for this alleged speech. We simply have to take Rima's words for granted.
  • There also seem to be something odd about Kanu's email address. If this was an official post with a governmental minister, wouldn't a @gov.sl be used instead of a simple @gmail.com? Anyone can register a gmail account and pretend to be someone else.
  • There is also very little information about this imam from Atlanta - "Sheikh Massally". The only trace I could find was this Yahoo group conversation mentioning someone by the name "Alhaji Sheikh Ismail Massally", "reknowned Imam in our Sierra Leonean community".
Rima also praises Kanu on Twitter, well, at what looks like a basically never-used Twitter account baring Kanu's name:

So what I'd like to know is how much truth there is to this story, if anyone can find out.
Is this story a complete fabrication by Rima Laibow? Or did they really send a sample of colloidal silver to Sierra Leone?

Has she noticed or tried to explain the rate of infection increasing in Sierra Leone where she claims her treatment is being used and falling in Liberia where conventional treatments are be used? I tried to find out but my computer stops me when I try to access her web page.

I cant find any confirmation of any of the assertions other than on Leibows site. but who knows, Kanu a while back did mention the possibility of trying silver.

but here Laibow allegedly states the shipment arrived Sept 28th.
According to a statement by NSF’s Medical Director Dr. Rima Laibow, a shipment of the product was shipped to Sierra Leone on August 20. However, it didn’t arrive until “September 28, 5 weeks later while the disease spread and people suffered and died unnecessarily because international forces opposed the simple clinical demonstration of the nutrient.” http://standardtimespress.org/?p=5520

but this article dated Sept 26th says they are already testing a 'batch'. ?

-----------------------
Seems very plausible to me Kanu did give that speech. He seemed to be in the area around Oct 11th and giving speeches about all the new strategies the Port Loko area has been implementing (public awareness, new treatment centers, etc) heres an example of such Oct 16th <at 3 mins he even uses the word "debunked" : )

The "transcript" Leibow and other similar sites have posted doesn't mention silver at all. sounds like him just talking about what he says he's talking about...[Cured by...] getting to the hospital and taking "the medicines the hospitals can give you for diarrhea, fever vomiting". <its kinda a major public campaign over there. I personally find it suspicious he would say anything that would be counter productive to the awareness campaign they are pushing hard. And mentioning a 'treatment' people can do at home seems counterproductive to me. (but who know people say weird things all the time)

in Rima Leibows alleged email TO kanu, she says:

rl.JPG

and yet I've not yet seen a link to this video OR a direct quote from Kanu about silver OR clarifying he was talking about silver. <seems Odd. (perhaps why she CC'd it to her 'lawyer' ?

-------------------------------------------------
Oct 10th Leibows site has this: (bold and italics mine)
NOTE: The following information has been reported to Dr. Rima Truth Reports by colleagues and member of several African governments. These reports were provided under journalistic confidentiality. None of these reports has been confirmed with clinical tests, medical documentation, videos or other irrefutable, hard-core substantiation.
.
The reports are clear enough, from credible enough sources, however, that we, the Trustees of the Natural Solutions Foundation believe the reports maybe accurate. The reports are consistent with what we know about Nano Silver 10 PPM’s support for normal cell membrane response to disease-causing organisms, including viruses.
.
High level, reliable sources tell us from at least 4 countries in Africa that Ebola victims appear to be recovering from this deadly infection coincident with them receiving the remarkable nutrient, Nano Silver 10 PPM. This is very hopeful news.
.
Their own immune systems appear able to regulate disease-causing multiplication of the weaponized, patented, unleashed and otherwise deadly Ebola virus to maintain homeostasis. They are among those considered “lucky” to have survived.
.
Not one country, but several, are reporting these results. Nano Silver 10 PPM is helping people faced with the health disaster move from illness to health.

found this site, seems to have good news links/info for Sierra Leone but so far I haven't seen nano silver mentioned anywhere, but I only glanced it over quick. http://news.sl/drwebsite/exec/search.cgi?start=101&perpage=100&template=index/default.html

This seems to be the only mention of nano silver on the papers web site. It is selling a different brand of false hope.
...a Sierra Leonean living in the Kingdom of Kuwait, Catherine Mary Winkler has recently recommended for use a substance known as eMiracle Mineral Supplementf in the fight to subdue the pandemic...Miracle Mineral Supplement has not yet been officially approved by the WHO but it has already played wonders in keep the human system safe from viral attacks. According to Madam Catherine, the acceptance and application of the substance to suspected Ebola patients would help calm temperatures down and reduce the activeness of the virus. "Like Nano Silver, the MMS is more active in keeping the body safe from virus," Madam Catherine told this medium recently in a telephone chat on the possibility of making available the MMS to Sierra Leoneans.

I can't find a mention of Sheik Ismail Massally.

It is notable that Alhaji Alpha Abubakarr Kanu is the Minister of Information and Communications and is not involved in with the Ministries tasked to deal with the Ebola outbreak. Miatta Barlay Kargbo is the actual Minister of Health and Sanitation. Kanu apparently also tends to speak out of turn.

Sierra Leone News : Alpha Kanu Apologises to Parliament for his Stupid Ebola Rant
By Awareness Times
Aug 26, 2014, 12:22

Government Spokesman Alpha Kanu (Khan) has Monday 25th August 2014, profusely apologised to Parliament for what many describe as foolishly thought-out, stupid utterances about spread of Ebola in Kailahun. In apology, Alpha Khan accepted it was “misguided” of him to engage in demented rumour-mongering against elected Kailahun MPs. Earlier, on a live radio program at 8am that morning, Alpha Kanu had accused honourable MPs from Kailahun as being responsible for the spread of Ebola in their district.

The errant government spokesman opened his buccal cavity and accused elected representatives of the people of Kailahun as having incited their people not to believe Ebola was real. Alpha Kanu-Khan alleged that as a result of Kailahun MPs telling inciting lies to their people, Kailahun residents did not take necessary precautions against Ebola. This, Alpha Kanu said led to Ebola disease being spread all over the district killing hundreds of poor Kailahun residents.

The accusations of such wicked and evil deeds by the Government Spokesman against the honourable members of the Sierra Leone Parliament, sparked off demands by the public for Alpha Kanu to name the Kailahun MPs who specifically engaged in such alleged unpatriotic acts. Many listeners told this press that if indeed Alpha Kanu had been saying the truth about how Ebola virus spread in Kailahun because of incitement by Kailahun MPs then he should be in a position to identify these accused MPs by name.

With the barrage of requests for him to name the impugned MPs from Kailahun, the unfortunate Government Spokesman could not even come up with a single MP’s name. This caused many to realise that the Government Spokesman was just doing what he is now well known for doing; lying and insulting decent citizens in the country. The outrage that ensued eventually saw the Government Spokesman himself coming on air later to apologise to the Kailahun MPs and the honourable House of Parliament for what he himself described as a series of “misguided” sentences that fell out of his unfortunate buccal cavity as orally spoken allegations against Kailahun people.

Many Kailahun residents who spoke to this newspaper described Alpha Kanu as “a comedian”. Others said he was “just a notorious clown” and still others described him as “one of the biggest jokers to ever darken the corridors of a progressive government”.

However, another sample of Sierra Leoneans interviewed said they were not surprised at Alpha Kanu’s display of stupidity over the radio air waves. They said he behaved like a typical “demented rumour monger” and an “unguided missile” that they have come to accept him to be in the country.

Whether the House of Parliament will accept the apology from the misguided Government Spokesman is not yet known but this newspaper will remain closely seized of this matter.

The Government Spokesman also made a string of other unfortunate utterances during the same radio programme including ones considered as coming out of the oral cavity of a mind still firmly embedded in the relics of a colonial mentality. Many government officials expressed regret over the radio performance.

“I was embarrassed listening to our Spokesman,” said a government official who declined to be named.

Miracle Mineral Supplement is a whole different world of quack "treatment" - as outlined in this article - it doesnt' contain silver, but it is based around Sodium Chlorite - which turns in to industrial-strength bleach Chlorine Dioxide when exposed to acid - such as in your stomach:

MMS is a repackaged solution of salt sodium chlorite, a cheap chemical which when mixed with an acid generates chlorine dioxide – a potent bleach used to turn wood pulp white, and to treat drinking water and swimming pools.

Adherents of MMS say it kills pathogens while leaving healthy cells untouched, and can cure Aids and cancer and prevent malaria. None of these claims has any scientific backing. The Australian and Canadian governments have banned the sale of MMS and labels have been changed in the US so the product is marketed purely as a water purifier.

Actually the transcript does mention nano silver:

He sent the nutriend Nano Silver - this works; people are getting better. The supply is enough for 300 people and we are going to bring some more.
Content from External Source
But like you say, it's not clear from the transcript exactly how the nano silver was used.

Was it to sanitize equipment? Treat wounds? There is no mention of how the product was administered. Most vendors of colloidal silver recommend drinking it daily for protection, and I think that is how Laibow consider how the product is supposed to be used, treating ebola as well. At least it's a very common thing in the CS community to drink that stuff.

oh yea. oops. I dismissed that sentence as it is so out of place in the context of the question and the rest of the response..plus the way he allegedly adds in the "nutrient" Nano Silver is pretty markety. anyway, ....and then, apparently, I completely forgot about it. sorry.

That is some awesome political journalism. If only the mainstream newspapers here would report as honestly on Tony Abbott's cabinet.
