It would be interesting to know whether the cultural idea of UFO =disc-with-dome led to all those fake discs with domes dangling from strings or tossed in the air, or did all the hoax pics create the cultural meme... I guess most likely they...

These type of questions always interest me. I think your hunch is right, there's a mutually reinforcing interplay between witness reports, popular culture depictions, and deliberate hoaxes of UFOs, at least from the end of the 1940s on...
