I haye trouble believing that the edge of the artifact would be so nicely rounded if that was the case. As with similar theories, a demonstration of how it was done (or existing examples) would go a long way towards supporting that theory.

This is my idea. The "wrinkles" are more accurately areas where the emulsion has been mushed up unevenly. There are thicker areas where the emulsion has mounded and thinner areas where the emulsion has been thinned out. In this positive image...
