Would a Biden decision give millions to migrants ?

One proposal layed recently by a Biden administration......
Washington (CNN) President Joe Biden on Saturday strongly endorsed the idea of the US government compensating immigrant families separated at the border under the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance policy," saying the previous administr https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/06/politics/biden-immigrants-payments-zero-tolerance/index.html ation's "outrageous behavior" warrants cash payments -- but he didn't go into detail about specific amounts.
I find this idea very problematic...... because it would allow hundreds (or thousands) of past or future migration to .....well.... take away my taxed money. There is no other way to say it.

Maybe I do not understand the idea.... and therefore is it bunk ? Can someone explain my possible misunderstanding ?

"If in fact, because of the outrageous behavior of the last administration, you coming across the border, whether it was legal or illegal, and you lost your child, you lost your child! ... you deserve some kind of compensation no matter what the circumstance. What that will be, I have no idea. I have no idea," Biden said, raising his voice and gesturing emphatically as he tore into his predecessor's onetime policy.

So, if you sent your unattended children across the border... you might be allowed upwards of $500k ????????
Isn't this rewarding bad behavior and bad parenting ?

A lawyer could say.... "Yes there might have been temporarily bad parental decisions , but only in the best future light of better decisions, These assuredly have become healthier decisions, in order to bolster the enhanced life of a child,
(jeez, I should'a been a lawyer).

Facts First: The White House says Biden's "garbage" claim on Wednesday was specifically a denial that the administration is considering payments of $450,000 to families affected by the Trump-era separation policy -- not a denial that the administration is considering giving some amount of money to these families. The Journal was correct that there are ongoing negotiations in which, in response to lawsuits, the Biden administration is talking about providing financial compensation. Since CNN doesn't have all of the details of these confidential negotiations, we can't definitively fact-check Biden's denial that $450,000 payments in particular were being discussed at the time.

This is not about the future. This is about the past, and encompasses a specific group of people.

That's not what this is about. These cases deal with border agents separating families that came across the border together. The parents would have loved to stay with their children. What's more, the administration lost track of them, and had trouble reuniting the children with their families when mandated to do so.

This quote from your post #7 suggests that Biden doesn't have much of a choice but to pay.

Article:
The United States family separation policy under the Trump administration was presented to the public as a "zero tolerance" approach intended to deter illegal immigration and to encourage tougher legislation. It was officially adopted across the entire US–Mexico border from April 2018 until June 2018. Under the policy, federal authorities separated children and infants from parents or guardians with whom they had entered the US. The adults were prosecuted and held in federal jails or deported, and the children were placed under the supervision of the US Department of Health and Human Services. A 2021 review done by the Biden administration found that more than 1,400 parents were ultimately deported without their children. In January 2020 the SPLC reported that the official government number of children separated from their parents or guardians under the policy was 4,368.

By early June 2018, it emerged that the policy did not include measures to reunite the families that it had separated.

The wikipedia article is really quite extensive.

tl;dr your tax dollars took children from their parents, now your tax dollars pay for this injustice

its not really an injustice. allegedly these parents brought their children here because of the fear of imminent violence in their own countries, so they should be grateful we didnt send the kids back. They are just mad because either 1. they were lying about the dangerous conditions back home or 2. they are mad they didnt get to stay too.

But ultimately i'm glad these lawsuits and payments will force us to just send the kids back with the parents. If we deported the parents then surely they lied on their asylum application.. so why are we letting the kids stay here? doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well, that's for the courts to decide, isn't it?
i doubt they will decide anything, Biden was saying they will likely just settle the cases, which is why he's saying they will get paid. was that in any of the above articles or do i have to look up a source for that statement?

lol. or not.. apparently they just updated it yesterday:

Justice Department Halts Settlement Talks With Migrant Families
Dec. 16, 2021
The government said it was unable to reach a global settlement with parents and children who were separated at the border under a Trump administration policy.

The Biden administration on Thursday pulled out of negotiations to offer financial compensation to thousands of migrant families for the harm inflicted on them by a Trump-era policy that separated parents and children at the border.

Lawyers representing the families said that Justice Department lawyers had advised them that they were terminating negotiations to settle claims for damages and would instead go to court to determine any compensation due to individual families.

Talks had stalled, they said, after a leak in late October suggested that up to $450,000 could be paid to each of the families affected by the policy. The premature news, which was seized on by conservatives, complicated a nearly yearlong effort to compensate migrant families.

Article:
According to the Wall Street Journal report, sources said families could receive payments close to $1 million in payments -- $450,000 per family member impacted by the policies -- but final numbers could shift. Many families, the article said, would likely get smaller payouts, depending on their circumstances.

The total potential payout could be $1 billion or more.

In theory, if the cases were lost in court, the payouts could be higher.

Only a minority of the families may be eligible for financial compensation, according to the Times report, because many impacted families have not filed complaints, perhaps for fear of reprisal from the government, the Times report said.

here's the original Wall Street Journal article referenced by Politifact. i can't read it now because im at my monthly limit, so not sure where that number came from

Washington Post:

Biden was asked about reports on the payments and pressed by a Fox News reporter on whether such payments would encourage more people to cross the border illegally. “$450,000 per person? Is that what you’re saying?” the president said. “That’s not going to happen.”

The ACLU, however, said it is working with the Biden administration on providing monetary payments.

“President Biden may not have been fully briefed about the actions of his very own Justice Department as it carefully deliberated and considered the crimes committed against thousands of families separated from their children as an intentional governmental policy,” ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said in a statement.

Either way it's going to be a long time to a resolution, what with appeals and all. it will be interesting to see what happens.

I'll buy that assessment. .... but only for a dollar. because I don't like it.
It is not strange that an 'a priori' policy by a prior president....needs to be corrected by the present presidency (say that 10 times fast).

Article:
It was reported in June 2018, that the Trump administration plans to pay Texas non-profit Southwest Key more than $458 million in the fiscal year of 2018 to care for immigrant children detained crossing the US border illegally.[180]

In July 2018, it was reported that HHS had diverted at least $40 million from its health programs to care for and reunify migrant children, and that the HHS was preparing to shift more than $200 million from other HHS accounts.[181] In September 2018, it was reported that the Trump administration planned to shift more than $260 million from HHS programs, including those on cancer research and HIV/AIDS research, to cover the costs associated with detaining children and delaying releasing them to adults.[182]

Putting the compensation figures into perspective.
This policy was already expensive to begin with.
